Gliders are not allowed in the state of Pennsylvania period!
People need to know this that plan on any type of railroad or glider exchange.
We tried to tell them and they don't believe us, we just don't want them to do something that they will regret.
What can we do?

This is sad. I could understand if they were venomous or endangered..
Doesnt them taking them an destroying them JUST for being owned, count as animal cruelty? I would think they would have to be vicious or carrying a deadly virus to be put down with cause.
It would better if they would extradite them to a rescue or something in a neighboring state to be rehomed. I find this stomach turning.

all of the cases we have heard about in PA involved the authorities taking the animal, placing it in a "shelter" and then usually they end up euthanized as no one will adopt them......and I have heard of several vets reporting illegal owners in PA.....I spoke with several pet store owners and the rules are really strange in PA.......they aren't illegal if you have a permit, but there hasn't been a permit issued in over 20 years.....they are considered "dangerous" to the natural flora/fauna (yeah right like they could like through the winter) and that is why they are restricted

Yes, it is sad. I'd much prefer my tax dollars going to a more worthy cause.... c'est la vie, I suppose.
However, I do find it hard to believe that a person surfing these boards (law enforcement or otherwise) could figure out where you live and show up at your door one day. Unless you specifically say, "HEY I LIVE AT 123 FAKE STREET, SOMETOWN, PA 18124, COME GET ME!" .. or GliderCentral is in the habit of releasing server logs and otherwise private account information.
Disclaimer: I don't have gliders, just check back here every once in awhile to see if there's been any progress. Of course if they ever become legal I suppose I'd start seeing them in local pet shops. They can legally obtain a warrant to get forums like GC to show them IP address from your computer. They then take it to Yahoo or whoever else you are getting your internet from, and get your name and home address, phone number and whatever else they want. They are the law.

So if someone from a neighboring state finds one in a shelter, are they able to come adopt it with a valid license? I would think they wouldnt adopt them to someone in PA since its illegal but apparently, no one would know they were up for adoption. Is there a rescue in a neighboring state that could call the shelters or whatever and ask to be notified if any come in and they will travel to get them?

If they go to yahoo and try to get info, the info they get might not be true, most yahoo users DO NOT use their real names and addresses when making a yahoo email account, I for one NEVER use my real name or address when making an account with any mail server, etc. I go by Jax, not my real name, so therefore it makes it nearly impossible for tracking and if someone uses different means to get online, some IP addies are jumbled its never the same one each time. And as far as finding account info on who you use to get internet service, like ATT, etc.half the people dont use their real information either!

Here is a new petition online to pressure the PA Legislature to re-evaluate the law that makes Sugar Gliders illegal to own. I am in the process of corresponding with local PA representatives and would eventually send this to them with other documentation...Please read and sign this petition if you support making them legal to own....YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A RESIDENT OF PA TO SIGN THIS. Making them legal to own doesn't just support purchasing sugar gliders, but it also means making thousands of loving homes available to surrendered, abused and rescued gliders. http://www.petitiononline.com/petsinpa/petition.htmlPlease pass this link on by posting to your MYSPACE, FACEBOOK, TWITTER pages or any other applications that will allow this link. Also feel free to e-mail it to friends and family. http://www.petitiononline.com/petsinpa/petition.htmlThanks for your support! Matt Thank You!

This petition was made on behalf of my 19 y.o. nephew who resides in PA and was heartbroken to find out that he can not legally own sugar gliders. Is anyone out there willing to support this cause? Please feel free to ask any questions regarding this petition if you have any concerns. One subject that will be discussed is to have new restrictions/regulations (if sugar gliders are made legal) on breeders so they can't set up shop in malls, parking lots, fairs, open-air markets, etc. in order to keep mills like (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets from taking advantage of uneducated animal lovers, and harming innocent sugar gliders. www.petitiononline.com/petsinpa/petition.html

So far I have 31 signatures on the petition...we need many more than that to make an IMPACT, if you could spread the word about it if you already signed it, that would be appreciated...
If you haven't signed it yet, please consider helping, it'll only take 5 minutes or less to help give others the same opportunities you have as a suggie owner.
Thanks!
Matt

I'm a little confused about glider ownership in Pennsylvania. Everything on GC seems so suggest they're illegal with no exceptions, but Gliderpedia seems to suggest that you may be able to own one with a permit, as well does this resource: http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/stateres.html#PACan someone point me to the actual answer? (A resource would be nice, too :)) It's not for me, since I live in Texas, but my friend who lives in PA and is interested in having gliders.

I know of at least 5 specific instances where people were caught owning gliders in PA and the gliders were confiscated. IMO it isn't worth the risk. Don't worry - she wouldn't own them if they were illegal, since the babies would be at risk - we were just trying to get a straight, official answer.

I am not sure, but I think that on paper you can get a permit, but that they actually don't give them. http://www.petsugargliders.com/sglaws.phpI am not sure how reliable this source is. Pennsylvania's law codes should be online. So, you could search in those to pinpoint the exact law!

Ah, thank you! That's rather frustrating, though - illegal to own without a permit, yet not really possible to get a permit?

Yeah. . . it sounds like they allowed them with a permit at one point, but for some reason decided to stop giving them out or renewing them! I do not understand why they are illegal there, or Massacusetts??? I can understand Hawaii because they could become establised. Who Knows?

Question. Did this petition ever actually get anywhere? Is it a battle still in progress? Does it have a chance?
I'm still in the heavy research stage of possibly becoming a suggie owner, and live in Florida now, but PA is orininally my home and I did hope to move back for medical school in the next few years. I'm absolutely disgusted though to discover the horrible ambiguity of these laws and the unwritten (or purposefully unclarified) rules that seem to deligate the actions of the several state groups that regulate wildlife/exotic pets/etc.
