In this situation here is a alternative to an e collar. Get some of the stretchy tape that only sticks to itself. It looks similar to an Ace Bandage. Apply Neosporene + Pain to the wound and cover with a small piece of gauze. Cut the stretchy tape in a narrow strip and wrap snugly around the gauze. We have used this succesfully with a glider that was chewing its toes. It protects the wound and they can't pull it off very easily if you apply it tightly.
