Alkina started making this sound last night when we went into the play room. Then she continued to make it all throughout the night. She has made this sound one or two times in the past, but not all night long. Sometimes it just sounds so desperate and sad - I just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything illness related. I thought it might be her calling "someone", but her cagemate was right there and she didn't seem particularly comforted by me going to her. Hiss-Bark (It takes a minute to load)

I have one that doesn't make a peep and the other makes those noises all the time..usually separately. She does the hissing sounds whenever she's cleaning herself and/or right when she's waking up and the barking...she LOVES to do between 1 and 5 a.m. Not sure what they mean but she's done it since day 1. I think some do and some don't. I don't think there's anything wrong though...at least, she acts fine...so I hope not!

Alkina, the one who the recording is from, is usually not very vocal - that's another reason I'm a little concerned.

My glider makes that noise when he's in his wheel or his ball. We think it's a noise he makes when he's excited about something, but we aren't exactly sure.

Mowgli makes that noise too sometimes! He usually does it in the middle of the night. I always thought it was just part of his bark. At first I was concerned that he was sneezing alot. My husband said it sounded like he was barking and then inflating a balloon. But he does it whenever he barks now. He tends to want to jump around and play, so I think that is part of the bark. Maybe he is calling out to see if there are other gliders in the area besides his mate. Perhaps he was hoping to live in a colony when he grew up. ;o)

I heard Rocket bark and hiss. But when I got Linus, I started hearing that sound-a combination bark/hiss. From both of them. They aren't in the same cage - and I usually see them hanging on the sides of their respective cages that face each other when they do that.
Also, I've heard each of them do it when they wake up and the other isn't awake yet. I always thought it was a "Hey! Come out and play with me" sort of sound.

I'm just not sure why she would be doing it all night long. She's never done that before in the (almost) year that I have had them. I went in to sleep in their room to make sure she was okay, and every time I'd just about get to sleep, she'd start again. It started when we went into the playroom around 10:00pm last night, and she didn't quit until 6:30 or 7:00 this morning. (There may have been an hour or two in there somewhere that she didn't do it because I think I may have actually gotten that much sleep!) She would make the noise while she was running in the wheel, or sitting on the hammock, or hanging from her toys or cage so it didn't seem to pertain to anything in particular. Guess I'll see what happens tonight. Oh, by the way, thanks everyone for your thoughts on this so far!

Maybe she just suddenly decided she had alot to say and became a very vocal glider! You also might want to consider taking her to the vet just to make sure everything is okay. My good friend had a cat for 13 years who suddenly started meowing from sun-up to sun-down a couple of years ago. She would stop sometimes for a few hours and nap, but then she would wake up and just meow and make noises over and over and over again for hours upon hours. My friend took her to the vet, and she had an illness or a neurological problem or something that was causing her be so vocal. I can't remember exactly what it was causing the problem, but I remember that it was medical. Almost like Turrets syndrome, but in a cat, I guess. I am sure that I am probably way off here, but since you said that your baby does this all night long now, it's a thought.

I have heard that noise from a few of my gliders also. But, it didn't last long or all night. Just here and there. I would also like to know what it means. Very interesting. Oh...I agree you did an excellent job of capturing the sound! I hope someone with some knowledge of this sound comes along and shares soon.

OMG Tracie...you know I played that sound and all three of my girls peeped out of the pouch to listen
Played it again and they came out! They never come out at this time unless I have a treat for them
Tuned up the volume a bit and my Furby glued herself to the bars of the cage angling her little head from side to side (like a puppy when they hear an odd sound)...it was so cute!
I stopped it to reply and they all went back in the pouch I would have to guess it is some sort of call to other gliders from that reaction
I'll have to play it again to see if they do it again

Well, Gliders make all different kinds of noises! They can crab when they are mad, bark like a little dog for a snack or attention. They also can hiss, they can purr, and they can chitter- chatter. They are just the most interesting animals arent they! I love how they have pouches like a Kangaroo! Lil Marsupial! Thanks

How old is your female? The noise sounds quite similar to the noise that my female makes when she is in heat. She is not normally a vocal glider, but when her heat cycle comes around she will call out all night long. Often with long, drawn out hisses and barks at the end. After one or two nights, she'll quit. It could be a possible cause for your glider. If she only does it for a few nights, mark down the date. The next time you hear her go all night with that noise again, check the date and see if it corresponds with her heat cycle. HTH

My female hiss-barks quite frequently. My male never does. It used to worry me, but now I"m pretty sure it's just a normal part of her vocabulary. She seems to do it particularly when she's trying to get my male's attention. I have been told by others on the board that it may be a noise indicating she is in heat. If your glider has never made this sound before but continues over the next couple of days, I might take her into the vet...but for now I wouldn't be too alarmed

I'll have to play it again to see if they do it again Too funny! Thanks everyone - I'm feeling a little better about it being just her calling for.... someone?? Alkina and Nara both are just a little over a year old, and this is the first time Alkina's made that noise all night, and as I said she's only made it a couple of times before. Not a peep out of her last night except for the normal grooming noises. She was just at the vet a couple of weeks ago and was given the all clear. Oh, and I try and write at least a few lines in a journal every night so that if something does come up, I can look back and see if/when it happened before - this most definitely went in there! (It's also where I keep track of what they eat each night, their weekly weights, and when nail trims are done.) I thought the sound came out pretty good, too! I went and got the camcorder, brought it in and turned it on, and almost on cue she started making the noise. If it would be of any help to others, whoever wants is welcome to use it for a " sounds" page. sounds like the description would be either a mating call, or just a call in general. Thanks again everyone for your input.

Tracie .. I have to say Sorry I have not looked at this thread earlier … and Thank you … I figured some one was describing something that well there was no way to tell.. but the recording actually made me laugh .. it was great!!! Honestly … I don’t thin that any one of us can really know… it could be anything … maybe she was just Mad about something … argument with the Hubby… lol… as always if concerned a vet check is best… I have heard similar sounds … if me as long as nothing else changed I would not panic… again .. great sound clip, it really captured a gliders vocal ability and how it can produce many sounds …

I've found that most glider sounds have several meanings. It's hard to tell exactly what they're saying.
"My doctrine is this: that if we see cruelty or wrong that we have the power to stop, and we do nothing, we make ourselves sharers in the guilt." ~ Anna Sewell, English Novelist

Our glider makes that sound, when my husband makes a noise at my glider. It's a game they play every evening.

Well, it obviously means something to other gliders!! That's funny, too, because when I play it mine don't do much of anything.

Well Mr. Magoo was sleeping in my hand and he heard it and instantly woke up came to the edge of his pouch and was like hum who's that! Pladed it again and he was not a happy glider as he does not like other gliders.

I can tell you without a doubt-since you will never hear that sound out of a male (if you do hear something similar, it's SM with a boy). Tell me how old your little girl is? That particular sound can start at anywhere between 4 and 9 months in a female, and not all girls will make it. Congrats!-your little one is in heat. Those that do make that noise will do so for 24 to 48 hours every month. Some only at night, some daytime as well. If her cagemate is an unneutered male-you may also be looking at some peanuts appearing in the pouch before long as well. The reason your presence couldn't help is because you don't have what she's looking for, lol. Worried me the first time, too.
