Hi everyone!

A friend of mine is coming to visit and take pictures of my gliders (she's a wonderful photographer). She is pregnant and she's not immune agains toxoplasmosis. Will she be able to play with the gliders? I've read a few posts about this disease and read that basic hygiene (washing hands) should suffice. What do you guys think? Will she be safe at home?

You know, I didn't know gliders carried this. I thought it was mainly cats. dunno As long as she washes & doesn't handle them too much, I think the risk would be minimal.

Sugar gliders are not carriers of Toxoplasmosis. In fact, if they contract it from cats in their vicinity, they become terminally ill quite quickly. It causes severe neurological damage that is irreversible blush In fact, that is what happened to my Cricky & Pika who both passed away over the winter cry

Now, having said that, it is always wise to use precautionary measures such as handwashing before & after handling any pet thumb

Enjoy your time with your friend. Please share the wonderful pictures with us once you get them smile

And don't rub eyes, mouth or nose after handling until after you've washed. If you absolutely have to-grab a tissue, clean towel or something like that. And to add to what Suz said-they won't have it unless you have a cat that has given it to them (and they'd be very sick), or if they'd come in contact with urine/feces of a cat somewhere (and would also be sick). They don't carry but not show signs like a cat can.

Thanks guys for the answers. My gliders have never been close to a cat so I guess everything is safe. My friend knows about the basic hygiene rules when you have a pet having pets herself so I guess she'll be alright.
