I noticed my sugar glider mickey on the floor of his cade about an hour ago and hes really quiet and keeps biting me which is not like him at all!!!

The worst bit is is that every so often he freezes and his spine curles and his eyes close as if hes dies and then about 5 seconds later he will slowly opewn his eyes and start crabbing as if he in great pain!!! Ive taken him to the vet but because she was not a specialist she didnt know what to do.

Im so worried and i have no idea what is wrong please help me!!!!!!

Thanks Sarah

Right now, please see if you can get him in to see a vet...This sounds serious.

Things to do:
Check for dehydration....gently pull the skin up between his shoulders if the skin stays tented up for 30 seconds he is dehydrated...you will need to get liquids into him ASAP

I agree there's NOTHING you can do for him BUT get him to a vet ASAP! A glider knowlegable exotics vet is preferrable, but if you can't get to one get to ANY vet for now!

The symptoms can be of a few problems, but for right now, he does need medical attention ASAP!

If he will not take liquids on his own, if you have a syringe (without the needle) try and force feed him - Pedialyte, Gliderade, water, juice...whatever you can get into him.

Here is a link to our Vet Database
I'm not sure how to help with locating a vet in your area.

This might help:

UK vet List you might have to sign up to the message board to read it though, I'm not sure.

You can see if a glider knowledgable vet will do a phone consult with your vet, this could very well save his life!

And if those aren't near to you, you could call and see if they will do a phone consult with a vet that is in your area.

See if you can print this out and bring it with you to a vet.
Glider in a Crisis....
vet should do a fecal smear, float and cytology along with a UA. If the glider has symptoms of HLP and is diet related...an x-ray needs to be done if all of the other tests are negative. If the glider is on a proven diet...has HLP symptoms...this is a secondary problem and Primary Issue needs to be found. *Calcium is being lost due to infection be it parasitic or protozoan. vet will need to treat for the illness and for Calcium deficiency at time of visit and for after care at home as well.
If these tests..... Fecal float, smear, urine analysis and cytology....are negative then a Culture and Sensitivity needs to be done at this time. The C&S takes between 4 to 7 days for results...so usually meds are given. If the Sensitivity report shows another med to be more effective....then a switch can be made at that time if no improvement is seen with the sick glider. C&S will save valuable time and may save the life of your pet if done early on the first visit of illness.

If glider is dehydrated during initial visit....sub q fluids must be given. Follow up care with the vet will be needed to keep the animal hydrated till he is eating and drinking on his own. This can get expensive ....so, have the vet show you how to sub q the animal as needed....at home for a few days to a week. I also suggest...have the vet demonstrate to you as ....how to hold and give meds to your glider.

Calcionate Syrup is a calcium supplement and should be given if glider is showing HLP symptoms...especially if on a proven diet. Along with meds for a bacterial or protozian
infection. Sub q fluids to combat dehydration.

During illness...keep your glider warm. If need be...give more blankies inside his pouch or carry him on you to keep him warm. One can also use a critter keeper with a small heating pad on one end to help for warmth. Keep heating pad on warm and check for warmth of glider. He should not be hot or cold.

With good supportive care between the Vet and Caregiver...most sugar gliders in a crisis survive. However, without the two hand in hand...the glider will not which often leaves the owner devastated.

Sending you and your little baby lots of hugs and prayers!

Linda, I'm too tired to read everything, and your blue lettering is hard to read on my black background ohwell If it hasn't been suggested, I'd also go with a round of antibiotics 'just in case'...Baytril would be my first choice. It won't hurt, and could help if something is there they aren't seeing.

Above all (reiteration): keep the glider WARM and HYDRATED (fluids)-by syringe-needleless-if necessary.

Hoping the little one is okay, and for an update worried

I would just like to say thank you to all of the advice that people have given me about my horrible situation!!!

I took Mickey to the a specialist vets today and they have kept him in over night and im told that if his condition doesnt get worse then i should have him home tomorrow.

He has been diagnosed with osterpoisis (dont think thats spelt right) but his bones have become very weak because of the lack of calcium in his diet. although i gave him suplimints and yoghurt it doesnt seem to have been enough i just wich id have known earlya and then i coule have done more!!!!

Thank you again Sarah

Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear that. At least he died in the hands of the person he loved, and not in a strange, scary, vets office.

Is he your only glider?
