A friends suggie got stuck on a rat glue trap. She is free from the trap and at the vet now. They are working to remove the glue. Need suggestions (I suggested shaving her) however the vet is thinking she may not make it, due to the glue. I can't see how she would ingest any, but is there poison that can be absorbed? Any thoughts there, too?

That is what we are thinking right now. Her's a little girl. Not sure of her age, but she's a joey. I suggested if they can't get the glue off to shave her.

GEEZE how much more inhumane can we get. Haven't people heard of have a heart traps. They come in ALL sizes. I have caught and relocated many a rat, and even mice, with them. Make me wanna.....!!!! Anyway, as far as I know the glider should be fine once the glue is removed providing it wasn't trapped with out food and water too long. I hope the little one is OK.

I was told that cooking oil rubbed on will work it off. The vegetable oil will help break down th sticky of they glue. It needs to be off slow and it will take awhile but the oil will work it off I have seen it on another animal just not a sugar glider. Poor baby.

You can also try the Dawn dish liquid, that stuff has done miracles as we all know!

She is alive and on her way home! She is mostly glue free, there may be a bit or two of glue, but they cleaned her up really well. And gave her a bath! So, she's probably not happy. But, I think we're okay!

Hello everyone. First I want to thank Shawna and everyone for guiding me through my joey's glue trap ordeal. I am sick to my stomach over this whole thing. Here are some answers to the questions about how did this happen and how was she freed. She goes to work with me everyday (well as of this afternoon she is banned from the building). When I have short meetings, I place her (she stays pouched) in a a private office in a safe area. Well, I secured a velcro strap at the top of her pouch instead of the small wooden slide lock because I used the slide lock behind my neck to shorten the string. Somehow she opened it. When I went to check on her she was not in the pouch. I moved the towel that was under the pouch and we surprised each other and she jumped away. She ran for the back of the office (small office with door closed). My staff person suddenly said in a very somber voice, "Oh Jan, you have to get her out of there". I thought she mean there was poison. I bent down and there she was, completely stuck and struggling to get free from a rat glue trap. It took another 10 mins for me to take part of the cube apart so I could free the trap from where it was. Unfortunately, there was a phone cable also stuck to the trap that was under her belly and could not be removed. Maintenance was called to cut the cable. I rushed her to the vet, glue trap and all. I was fighting back the tears. I am the director of a service where I MUST stay calm during emergencies - this time, I FAILED! I was not calm. During terrorist attacks and hurricanes, I have been calm, but not when my little glider is in an emergency situation. The vet anesticized her, and he and 6 helpers worked with tongue depressors to free her bit by bit. After that, they used vegetable oil to clean off her body. She looked so pathetically tiny all oiled down and a lot like a cute bat. He bathed her in Dove. About 2 hours later, he gave her back to me in a small box - ALIVE! She is home now and shortly I shall try to coax her out of that box. Time will tell what damage has occurred. We do not know if she ingested any of the glue. I am all torn up inside about this. These traps should be outlawed! They do make Have A Heart traps for critters!!

All of the bird boards I am on recommend peanut butter for glue traps. Several people have had birds fly into those hanging sticky fly tapes.
Use peanut butter to get off the sticky and Dawn dish soap to get off the peanut butter.
I am glad that the little tike is ok, keep us posted.

Thank you for the update. I'm happy to hear that she is home safe and sound. I can imagine the fear you were feeling. It's interesting how we can maintain self-composure during emergencies on the 'outside', but when it hits home. I'm like you, my nerves are just about shot when it comes to my gliders... I'd say considering everything it sounds like you maintained yourself quite well.... Sending lots of prayers that your little one will be alright.

I am so sorry to hear this happened to your little glider and glad that it sounds like she'll be ok For future reference: gliders are GREAT at opening up stuff. They are real escape artists! My female Tanooki unzipped a zippered pouch from the inside before. Velcro would be no problem at all for a glider. I enthusiastically recommend using zippered pouches and also safety pinning the zipper to the pouch. Even with this method, if there is any "slack" where the zipper can be pulled even a bit, your glider can still squeeze out if she really wants to. After Tanooki almost escaped from me outside after opening her zippered pouch like this, I make a point to never leave a glider in a pouch unattended. A glider can even chew its way through a pouch if she really wants to. If I do have to leave my glider unattended in a pouch, it's either A) in a room that is TOTALLY glider-proofed in case they get out, or B) the pouch is also in a glider-proofed carrier. There also have been some sad stories about glider suffocating when left alone in bonding pouches, so I always like to keep my glider with me whenever possible. Please understand I am not blaming you, I just want you to be aware. I had no idea that gliders could get out of pouches like that until Tanooki escaped on me So I just wanted to tell you so you can keep your babies safe. Wishing you the best

Hi Jen, I totally appreciate your post. There was another person in that office, but neither of us realized she de-pouched. Believe me, this was a total wake up call. I need to order some zip pouches online because I have spent numerous hours looking for them locally to no avail. I did not feel blamed, so do not worry about that. J

Jan, I wanted to say, you sounded very much in control when we spoke today. You did a great job with her! Give her a kiss for me (just don't tell her it's from me, she probably doesn't like me much!) She is a beautiful glider, and I am glad all is well.

Hi Shawna, We are in the play cage now. She looks semi pathetic, but at least she is out of the pouch, and letting me pet her. She is very quiet, not playing or very active.
Did I tell you that Danny constructed a fantastic play "cage" for us? It is PVC 4' x 5' x 6'high with a hinged door.

That is awesome! She's probably worn out from all of the excitement today. I keep telling you, you are doing much better with her than you think you are She loves you.
