I've been curious about the platinum gene. I've been doing some research about it and have a few questions?

Which glider do you think carries the gene in Haley's lineage? Lil Dipper, Bailey, or both?

Are these the only pairings that have resulted(either directly or further down the line: grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc...) in platinums:

Lil Dipper/Bailey
Bijou/Piffin

Only gliders from Sammie/Hope and Frodo/Noel that have been bred together. Are there any other platinums from other lines?

Obviously there are hets because Hailey and Mr. Sambuca are both from standard parents. breeders of platinums: are there any little things about your gliders that you think is a "sign" that they carry the platinum gene? For example, Sheila's Bailey had unusual, short fur. Anything else?

I know there aren't many platinums out there, but I wondering if anyone has any info that can help shed some light on this elusive gene. wink

Sheila owns another platinum from a different line. I believe she purchased him from Flying Fur Ranch. There is also a platinum female in the Chicago area that Karin's friend produced smile So, there are 3 different known platinum lines at this time.

Since there aren't many platinum's out there yet, it's hard to say for sure if there are actual hets for the gene or not. Also, we aren't sure if the 3 platinum lines that have popped up are all the same genetic variation. While the coloring can appear to be the same, the genetics could be totally different for each line. It will take a few years of breeding to figure that out...

One other question. Do you think it's possible for there to be a such thing as a "dilute platinum"?

The gene seems to darken with each generation so, for example, if one of Haley's joeys were to have a joey that is really light, but not quite light enough to be called a platinum, would it be fair to call that baby a "dilute platinum"?

For example, one of my gliders, Silvara, is the great grandaughter of Mystik. Her mom AND her grandma are both VERY light as is Silvara. So, would it be possible that they could actually be platinums? Just a dilute form of the gene?

Platinum is a co-dominant color. Thus to produce it... one must express the coloration.

There is a dark platinum and a light platinum. One that is dark... is able to produce a very light platinum and visa versa.

Judie, just because only one platinum gliders is needed to produce platinum babies does not mean that there aren't hets. Genetics are an interesting thing and what may be true for one (WF's and mosaics) may not be true for another (platinums). That's why, at this point, I feel it's too early to rule out the possibility of platinum hets.

Guerita, I think that platinum coloring is a dilute version of the gray gene. So, I don't think there is such a thing as a dilute platinum, but that's just my opinion.

So what would the characteristics of a dark platinum be? It seems that platinums have really thin stripes, is that a requirement for a glider to be a plat or just a coincidence and not really a "requirement" for a glider to be a platinum?

For instance, what would the difference be between a dilute platinum and a high generation WFB? They're both going to be light, so how could you tell the difference?

My girl is a 1st generation WFB, same with her mom and grandma, but they are all 3 very light and her mom is only a 25% leu het, so I doubt the leu gene played much part in her coloring.
