i'm not sure which section in which to ask this, but in my mind it revolves around bonding and relations, so here i ask:
my local pet store asked me the other day how many gliders i have now, and would i be willing to sell them any. i could use money, however, not at the expense of my babies' health and happiness. here at home, they are talked with, held, handled, pet and loved. if i were to sell any, i don't know how long they will be setting in the store's plexiglass boxes, and in uncomfortable surroundings with inferior diet. i doubt that they'd be handled, or even talked to while they waited for their new home. this is a small town with not many people wealthy enough to purchase a glider at $250 each, so they'd likely wait a long time like this.
i guess i'd prefer to either sell couples by ads in the paper, or more likely than not, just make a larger living area for them and let them breed as they will. ...... but how many is too many? at this time, i have 5, but i'm sure that when the babies mature, that will change very quickly.
any advice?

Pet stores are empty during the night. So, anyone coming to look at a glider will do so during the day, when the little ones are sleepy. It becomes a game to cruel teenagers, to poke the gliders to make them crab.
Also a pet store is going to sell to anyone with the money - not interview people about whether or not they are right for gliders, or if gliders are the right pet for them.
Why are you letting your gliders breed at all? Seems to me that 5 is a wonderful number - and getting the males neutered will keep it at that number.
I hear you about the money - but your gliders are your pets. It isn't their job to make you some money.

Are you breeding gliders to sell? If so, I would suggest that you take another route and avoid selling to pet stores. That just would not be fair for those little babies to be sitting there. It sounds like you understand whats is involved with caring for these little ones, with that, realizing that they will not get the proper care, diet, attention necessary. Your better off with placing an ad here in our Glider Ads forum, or thru your local news paper. Please keep them home with you until new homes are found. Good Luck, and I pray that they will find a loving forever home.

you could maybe have the pet store send any prospective new glider owners your way My local one has my cards on hand, as well as my hand outs, Scott has no interest in selling them in the store, but would rather they find a breeder to get one from.

any advice? Letting gliders 'breed as they will' is a very bad idea because as joeys mature, they will interbreed with mom and dad and each other. Inbreeding gliders lead to unhealthy gliders that can have a host of deformities, neurological conditions, behavioral problems...the list goes on and on. If you do decide to breed, please breed responsibly by separating the joeys from their parents when they are about 10-12 weeks old, OR neutering all of your males (you will still have to separate female joeys from dad unless you get dad neutered also).

i agree! breeding is a big responsiblilty & should be kept to professional breeders....not an "at will" thing...

thank you everyone for all the info. i'm not raising them to breed and sell. i'm just very new to having pets that reproduce so quickly.
i guess i'll have the papa Maynard neutered when i have money to do so. i think he's the only male. the babies are still not mature enough to tell (i think). i see no poms on any but him. yet. i can see the pouch on Jojo, but so far Chugga won't let me get a good view no matter how i try.
i don't like the idea of separating Maynard from the family. he'd not do well. so a snip is in order.
and if i should want to sell any, which at this time i don't, i shall definitely put my own ad in the paper.
you guys are wonderful! thanks!

Please have any males neutered. If you leave the joeys in with the parents they will eventually inbreed, if the males are not neutered ! It is very unsafe not to mention wrong to inbreed any animal

that gives me a bit of hope. Jojo is the oldest of the babies and she was born last november. maybe Mishka and Maynard will have another joey before i need to get Maynard neutered. then again, my housemate suggested to just get another cage for the mama and papa.

If your wanting more babies another cage would be a great idea. One for the joeys and one for mama and papa. But keep in mind if your joeys are all girls and mama and papa have a male you will have to get him neutered because you dont want to put him in with all the females or leave him in with mama and papa.
