Dobber and Bingo had their first litter of joeys last Saturday, Mother's day weekend. This morning, one of the joeys was climbing out of the pouch in the cage. I put him back in, mom started fussing over him and I went to work. I came home this afternoon and got him and his twin brother out and held them for a little bit. They were very active and seemed fine. Later at dinner, I noticed the little guy had climbed completely out of the cage and was on the shelf under it. I picked him up, he was still warm, and put him back in with mom and dad. A couple of hours later, I heard him crying for momma and he was at the bottom of the cage again. This time he was very cold. I put him in my shirt and held him to warm him up, rubbed him. Then I put him and mom in a pouch together. She did nothing. I called my vet who said pretty much I needed to warm him up and then try to feed him pedialyte. She said I could come in the morning and pick up supplies to supplement and hand raise if I needed to. He got better for a while and I called Suz to see if there was anything else I could do. Baby died in my hands while I was talking to Suz. I didn't think I would be this upset over the babies, I hadn't even bonded yet. But it's like losing one of the older guys. Please pray with me that the other baby makes it ok.

Even though you really hadn't bonded with the little guy you still had a connection to him. I will say a prayer for his little brother or sister. Condolences

Now the other boy is climbingh out of the pouch!! I took him away from mom and dad and put one of my husbands hot hands (for hunting) in a sock and have the baby on that with fleece wrapped around him. Mom and dad are mating again, could that have something to do with the babies being rejected? I'm going to try to feed him

Baby boy #2 just died in my hands.....
Why didn't I see this sooner? Yesterday she was nursing both of them, I just don't understand. I feel like I've failed as a glider mom.
It's going to be a long night ahead....

Its always hard loosing little ones, wether they had a chance to bond to you or not. They were a part of your family. My condolences. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm so very sorry that you ended up losing both of them I wish I could have been of better help to you... It is possible that the female's heat cycle interfered with her interest in the joeys - although that is not common, it is still very possible.

I am so terribly sorry for your double loss. Perhaps there was something wrong that mom knew but you could not physically see. I am sure the pain must be unbearable. My heart and prayers are with you.

I am soooo very sorry about your loss!! I'd like to share with you an experience i just went thru myself this month. Mama and Colby had twin boys OOP on the 9th of this month. They both seemed to be very healthy and normal? I had taken them out of their sleep pouch to hold them for a bit every day! On the 10th i found the 1st little boy left alone in the pouch..i put him back with mama...On the 11th the same thing happened yet this time he was cold but still alive. Again i put him back..on the 12th i reached in the pouch and pulled out the remains of that baby boy! He was canabalized by his mom and dad!I too posted on the breeding forum here on GC! I ddn't know about rejection..actually had read about it yet didn't put 2 and 2 together?? I felt it was my fault by putting him back and not just keeping him out and hand raising him! I also talked with a few people here and suz.Everyone helped me to feel better about not being a bad glider mom! Mama could have known something was wrong with the baby that i didn't and took care of the problem as they would normally in the wild! I was very scared to put the 2nd baby back with mama but suz and others told me that was the best thing to do and just watch closely for signs of rejection...which i did! So far the baby (chase) i finally named him....is doing great in with mama and daddy! I was told and also read that there is some what of a window persay that this could possibly happen to chase too?? I know how upset you must be as i share the loss with you and my prayers i send to you!! We have both learned from this terrible experience and if it ever happens again, heaven forbid,we will know what to do! I'm sorry this is sooo long yet i thought it would be a good idea and might help you to feel better sharing my experience of loss with you also..strange because this happend to both of us within only a couple days time?? Hang in there...you're Not alone!!! If you need to talk feel free to reply to my message;) Take care,Syndi

Thank you everyone, for your condolences. I told my daughters ( ages 9 and 7) yesterday after work. We had a little funeral in the flower garden. They decorated a check box for them, and we wrapped them in fleece and then covered the grave with stones. They made a little head stone out of scrap tile from our floor and then we planted a rose bush next to the grave. It was very nice. As a parent, this was the first pet funeral we've had. I am not looking forward to having more, however.

My heartfelt sympathies for you & your daughters. I've had to do that myself before, and this is how I memorialize my girls too. One is between an Obedience Plant and a Larkspur; one is between the Larkspur and a Stella De Oro Daylilly; and the third is behind the Larkspur near a Columbine.
May many many many days pass before either of us have new flowers we must plant. Amen.
