Ya'll are probably going to think I'm crazy, but I just thought of this...

Wouldn't it be neat to be able to have certain people assigned to "approve" glider bedding? We could even make a little "stamp" that people can put on their websites that signify that their bedding is glider-safe.

I would not only encourage vendors to put extra effort into making their bedding safe, but it would also help to give buyers the comfort of knowing that they're buying bedding that is safe for their gliders.

vendors would send their bedding to one of the people chosen to approve bedding. Then the "approver" would check it over and give the vendor their comments and, if their bedding passes, then the vendor gets to put that person's "stamp" on their website. The person who approves the bedding then gets to keep the bedding as "payment" for their services.

What do you guys think? Good idea, bad idea, or just plain rediculous? As both a buyer and a vendor myself I know that I'd love to be able to know bedding is safe and to also be able to proudly display a symbol to show that my bedding is safe as well.

I think it is a great idea.

I also think things should be tested under different conditions. Gliders that dig and/or chew in their bedding. Colonies - to see how many gliders will fit. Maybe even breeding - to see how it does with a family. (although I wouldn't test something with my joeys unless I already knew it was going to work!)

I'm thinking that rather than a person's stamp of approval, we could have a glider's, or group of gliders', stamp of approval.

I also think it is a GREAT idea!!! I know I'm hesitant to buy from new vendors because I can't see the quality of the work...but if someone experienced gives good reviews I'm much more likely to buy from a new vendor. Speaking of which...Nicole, I need a fish bed!!!

I think this would be an excellent idea. Make the testers rescuers! Rescuers will have plenty of gliders to test on with lots of different habits, and LORD KNOWS rescuers can always use extra pouches and toys.

I think whoever is a tester needs to have experience sewing so they know what to look for.

Actually, I was thinking that whoever tests the bedding could always send it off to a rescue. smile I'm sure they'll end up with so much bedding they won't know what to do with it eventually, lol.

I agree April, they will need sewing experience, or at least have had gliders for SO long that they know what good bedding should be like. Some like Suz. smile

Well, I sew and have a store and am a rescuer. AND, I would be willing to test things for some of my special needs babies. Would that help?

Even more than bedding, lately, I see a need for toys to be safety tested. In my mind I put toys in 3 categories: unsafe, tent safe/safe under supervision, and cage safe.

Well, I wouldn't be the one to choose. I think that it would be best to have a "vote" to choose who people think would be good for the job.

Good idea about toys too! I also like those catagories cause there us definately some really awesome bedding that would be great for gliders to have, but only for tent time, not in-cage.

On the one hand, I think it's a great idea so I'll have more faith in the seller, and others will be more likely to consider me once I am able to mass-produce the toys I make currently for mine. On the other, I'm too lazy to get off my butt and go to the post office to send it and have it approved, therefore I may never be. lol
Oh, well, simple solution to that, huh?

Well, I think it would be good because then buyers would start looking for that symbol on sellers' websites, therefore encourages vendors to not only send in their stuff to be approve, but to also put in the extra effort to make sure it's safe.

Lastly, should someone send something in that DOESN'T pass the test,t hen they'll be able to find out what's wrong and make the necessary improvements to make it glider-safe. smile

The only question I have with that is once in a while I have sold a few things that I made on here. I do not have a website and probably am not going to get one any time soon. I do make quality products at least they work great for my gliders. I also only use the best material I can get and I make sure my stitching is double sewn with no exposed seams. But what about someone like me that does not have the website and only sells a few things?

*I* will be your personal stamp of approval!

I have received an incredible, awesome, terrific cage set from SilverWolf - it was SO well made and incredibly creative. It is a Hanukkah cage set - and I recently passed it along to my Jewish glider friend who was just in awe of how well it was made and how you got all the details right.

Sorry - had to side track a bit ... back to the previous discussion.

When you post bedding you have for sale then you can add that you've gotten the "seal of approval" from "such-and-such". wink

It's not something that someone would need to sell. It's simply to help out buyers and let them know for sure that what they're buying is 100% safe. smile

Thank you alden I just have never gotten to where I can actually set up a store. I am great at sewing but the crafty part of glider toys I stink at lol. But give me something to sew and I can do it. Just have not had the time to sew enough to open a store. So I just have to do it as I get a chance. Working on a project right now if I can get it to work right I will definately post.

I am willing to be one the "board of approvers" and think this is a great idea thumb So many times, there are small things that need to be tweaked to make the pouches and toys safer for the gliders. Having a board of approvers that would let the vendors know what those improvements need to be and then can give their "seal of approval" to the individual items would be a great benefit to the community!

I was worried that you'd be too busy to be able to be an "approver", but I'm SOOOO happy you can join in! Thanks!

I really like the idea, too! I have purchased many items off of ebay and some are great and some are not. It would be nice to have someone test the items first, rather than wasting the money. As far as the "stamp"-maybe we could have a contest to design a stamp of approval-suggie tested-suggie approved-type seal? Could be fun....

I think it is a good idea as long as there are plenty of people to test the products before a decision is made.
I would hate to see a great idea go bad b/c it turned into a "poularity" contest where people were only "approved" or not based on who they are instead of what they sell.
I think several "testers/approvers" are needed and then they can come together to make a decision. Also if there are negative things about an item; Maybe there should be a way that the vendor was contacted in private to correct the error. This way it doesn't turn into a "grab your pitch fork and torches" topic.
Does that make sense?
BTW: I'd love to be a tester/approver!

Krys, you are absolutely right! I'd be very sad if cerain people got a hold of my products to test them... as I pretty much know what their verdict would be already. wink lol

Suz, yay! You should SO be on the board, esp. in case someone comes out with a new rejected joey supply.

I think we should have lots of potential testers, not a set "board", because that's so few people to be sending so much stuff- spread the fun, guys! lol. But they should all be "approved" people themselves: not biased, knowledgeable, etc. Maybe have a thread for nominations? If the nomination is seconded, etc....

Maybe start another thread for potential stamps? Artsy people, get ready! Personally, I am more of a writer- I love to draw, but it is certainly not my gift. For those of you who have that gift, start sketching!

It was suggested, and I like the idea, that there be a "check list" for the approvers. I like that - and then a place for additional comments, worth up to 5 points.

So, if there are 5 things on the check list, worth 5 points each, then the "bonus" 5 points .... Then a score of 30 would be perfect. Then say, anything under ... 23? ... would be unacceptable?

Also - this may seem obvious - but let's use Karin as an example. Karin makes about ... 10? ... different pouches. I'd say that if ONE of her pouches is glider approved, they pretty much all would be. So, she doesn't have to have each one approved - just a couple "samples" of her work.

What do you guys think?

I would love to be a tester! I am not as experienced as most on here, but I do have 7 gliders all healthy & happy and I do know what to use & what not to use. I do not personally know anyone here and don't live by them, so my opinion would be totally unbiased and based solely on the facts of the item and whether it would be safe or not. I have purchased cage sets, pouches & toys and made some of my own for my crew and have found pros & cons with them all. Some of the sets had loose threads after the first washing and another used jingle bells which could get a claw caught, so there is an awful lot to think about for the safety of your little ones!

I like this idea too! My only concerns are...if a tester is not a pouchmaker per say, they honestly do not know what to look for imo. Testing the product for glider likability (is that a word? LOL), yes.

I am reading concerns about popularity, being fair, etc. This really bothers me frown . What purpose would this serve if that were the case? The focus MUST be on safety. If we are really concerned about the well being of the glider's, I simply do not understand why that should be a concern.

I know of at least five current vendors, hands down, who have safe, outstanding product. Some vendor's I have not seen...some I have seen and have concerns. This idea must be approached with a positive attitude.

Maybe we could just nominate people for testers? I mean, I like the idea of people like Cheryl, Karin and Suz testing pouches because they are all VERY careful and will catch any safety risks before even sticking it in a cage with their babies.

...Maybe they could be first level and then send it off to a tester to use with their gliders. I mean, I DOUBT that Cheryl or Karin need pouches/toys... But if they could take a look and then send them on to someone with diggers/chewers like Alden, I think that'd rock.

That way, they'd have different tiers of testing and they'd be safe by means of testing without bias because there would be two people involved.

I think some of us that dont make pouches have been taught by the best (such as yourself Karin) to know what to look for and what not to.

I would love to be a tester, but one thing everyone needs to keep in mind, IF you send one of your items to a tester (no matter who it is) and they come back and say a,b,or c needs to be corrected, dont take it negatively.

I could tell you, I for one will NOT say something is good and safe just cause I like ya!! wink

THIS IS SO COOL! We could be like the fruit of the loom testers "tester #43" LOL!

My opinion as part of the glider community:

I like the "tiers", which is close to what I was thinking. You start with a "level one" tester, that has lots of experience in sewing and creating, and safety. Then, it goes to a "level 2" tester, and gets lots of abuse, and washing, then maybe a "level 3" tester that just knows when their gliders are happy, and if it is falling apart yet.
Also, a time limit. Only gets approved if
1. tested for at least (blank) number or weeks
2. Washed at least (blank) times
3. used/tested by at least 1 of each level tester
etc.

What do you think?

Oh, and I would LOVE to be a tester too! I make lots of things, but not many glider things. I'm not a sewer, but I am a crafter. I could be a level 2 or 3 as per above...
