Marcel was neutered and his tail amputated. Last night we made do with a straw and homemade e-collar, which he tore off. He left the straw on the tail and did fine. So, today a lovely package came - Nancy sent me an snap e-collar and a special pouch. I took the splint off his tail and put on the e-collar. Well, after 15 - 20 minutes he figured out how to pop it off. (He wedged against the edge of his cage and pulled!) The good news - he's exhausted and passed out now. How do I keep this on him? It was tight. Do I just use the tail splint? Will it heal if it's covered? He hasn't gone after the neuter site at all - in fact, I can't even see the neuter site (lasers are great, btw!) It's just his tail. He only had to have one stitch in it due to chewing at the vet. I am in tears. This is so frustrating. Since he can, with a lot of twisting, get his tail to his mouth, should I just not use it and only use the straw on the tail? Will having a straw on the tail make it heal slower? Plus, he won't eat anything. I've syringed fed him a bit, but he won't even eat glider mush. I'm gonna call the vet back in the morning, but I don't even know what to ask. His poopy is black and tarry - is that the mega antibiotics he's on? Should I be forcing yogurt on him? He is not dehydrated, just not eating. Any suggestions on food or what to ask the vet tomorrow?

I used vet tape on Bindi's e collar (she had part of her tail amputated to), I never had any problems with her getting her collar off after that. I also used a small bird cage for her hospital cage (she stayed beside my bed at night), then I just put a shallow bowl in the corner for her to eat out of. She would hang from the cage and "lap" up her food, she did great! I couldn't give Bindi a large pouch to sleep in though, b/c she could curl up in it and get to her tail, even with the e collar on. So I just put lots of hammocks in her cage and a small tupperware container with fleece blankies in it!

Oh yeah - I forgot to mention. Marcel is also blind. He doesn't mess with the straw on his tail, but I don't know if it will mess up the healing at all. I'm worried about it, well, rotting or something...

Do you have a pic? I would only put the straw on while you can't watch him (at night or if you have to leave him), I would keep if off and keep a CLOSE eye on him while your home. That would give the area time to "breath" Have you tried giving him some chicken baby food? That has a strong odor to it, maybe he would eat a little for you!

Molly, I know your frustration all too well. Don't know if you've been keeping up with it, but Magellan has been in an e-collar since early JULY!! It's a tail-related issue as well...the last surgery he had on his has made him a "genuine" hamster (nothing but a 1/4" nub). So I have a HUGE of sympathy for you. It'd be great if Marcel would BEHAVE himself & not pop off his snap collar...my suggestion for you to try is to take a piece of duck tape & put it on the OUTSIDE of his collar (away from his face) over the flap. At the very least, that'd take him a couple days to figure out how to get out of. You might also take an extra piece of molefoam & put it around the inside diameter of the collar (just in case he can wedge it in a corner & wiggle his head out...because the snaps are too far apart). He's probably mega-stressed out over the neutering yesterday & all the fussing with restraining him from getting to his tail. Have a little faith, he'll start eating again in another day or so. As long as he doesn't dehydrate too badly, it's going to come around soon.

Minkasmom gave good advice with the tape on the collar. all else fales put the collar on him and wrap him up and keep him close. i could be wrong Molly so dont quote me but i would wrap him with his tail out. keep the collar on him. let his tail get some air and dry out so it can heal. my thoughts were the same with it being in the straw with moisture and such. though it wouldnt rot it would just take longer i would think. (again could be wrong) oh Mol, i am so sorry sweetie! *tight hug* i am here for you hun, we all are. we will see you thru this. you can do this. just take some deep breaths and call the vet. as far as him eating i honestly dont know. though i do know that one day without eating good wont hurt him. try and see if he will take some yoggies after his pain meds, it seems to be working good with Thor right now.

Molly, I'm so sorry to hear about Marcel. I will keep him and you in my prayers. Try giving him a little bit of Tapioca pudding. Since it's sweet, they like it. And at least, it's something to avoid keeping his stomach empty. I've also heard that Tapioca also calms them down a bit. Big Hug.

I'm lucky with the meds - he actually likes them. No problem at all, I can even do them all by myself. I brought him to work today with the straw on his tail. He managed to pull his tail out and started chewing on it in the middle of 1st period. I ran over and, thank GOD Nancy sent me an easy e-collar, I got it on nice and tight. He is just sitting there. He won't crawl into a pouch with the collar on - even a large opened one. He won't sleep without being in the pouch. He looks so miserable and sad. Just sitting on a piece of fleece.

i have given my guys blueberry activia, which they liked. i have also given ensure, & they drank that down. pedialite is ok, but there is alot of salt in there(per what my vet said). someone told me, though, that tapioca wasn't too safe to give. something about the pearls enlarging in their stomach, i think. i haven't gone thru what you have experienced, though, with tail surgery, but i do hope everything will turn out ok. josefine

When I was glider-sitting for Phayzed, her glider would stand on his head to sleep and refused to go into a pouch with the e-collar on I would put a fleece blanket over him and he'd move to a different corner and stand on his head again

sounds like you are doing a great job! Poor guy! The antibiotics can definitly cause him to lose his appetite. You mentioned black tarry stool. That concerns me because it could be the antibiotic is TOO strong. I'd ask the vet to check his stool for blood.

Well, yesterday was rough. He took off his tail splint twice and had to spend the day in an e-collar. He won't eat in the collar, so has lost about 5 grams (since before his surgery - how much is tail, I wonder. ) Last night, I let him 'roam free' without splint or collar and all he wanted to do was clean himself. I watched him the entire time. Poor baby actually fell asleep while washing the base of his tail in the hammock - sitting up, nose down. We got a better straw and he ate a little bit and slept well last night. (Being blind, he seems to have his days/nights mixed up. Oh well...) This morning, he came to work with me again. Ate some ensure and drank his water and slept for awhile. Then he pulled the splint off. (Since it touches his fur, I can get it off without hurting, but he chatters at it - giving me warning to get the e-collar back on again.) His poop is brown, but a little runny - much better than yesterday and he is peeing again! (Never thought I'd be so excited about pee and poopies! ) His tail is looking really good. Still has some dried blood on it, since I won't let him clean it. But the skin is pinkish and no swelling. He is currently sitting behind me VERY unhappy in his collar - no splint/straw - and not moving.

You are doing great Molly...and I COMPLETELY understand your anxieties and worries and overall "I am trying!". It is almost 3weeks since Vu was injured and we still have a long way to go...it's so exhausting worrying and trying to do your best! Hang in there...we can hold hands as we carry on, but you are doing wonderfully. Hang in there! Is it tomorrow yet? LOL

Molly, thanks for the update.
I swear - worrying about these guys can be a full time job! How do you have time to leave the house, go to work, make dinner, do laundry - any of that "normal" stuff seems so unimportant when one of our babies needs us!
I have a blind girl - she is such a darling! I can only imagine what it would be like for her if she had to go through this.

Yesterday - I sat in the car with him until my husband came out - I was just too worn out to even move... Today is much easier - he's not fighting the e-collar and even had a bit of ensure in it. He did scare me this morning - I had him in my classroom, but I had hall duty. When I came back in with another teacher, he had opened the cage and was gone. I was panicked and starting looking. Thank God, he had climbed up my flag in the corner and was just sitting there. If he could see, I don't know where he would have ended up!

If he could see, I don't know where he would have ended up! i think Thor and Marcel should go bowling... they have to have a mind link or something. i mean they both had tail surgeries and have BOTH ninjaed their way out of a cage at the worst time! and then Erin's Cessna did the same thing too! maybe gliders just need to take a walk to cool off because the e-collars make them so angry. you have been in my prayers Molly, and so has your little man. if you need anything hun, if you wanna talk, and if there is anything i can do to help i will. just say the word. dont give up, its a long road but you are doing VERY well. i am so proud of you! you are doing so well with all of this. but now that the surgery is over and his tail is healing its all down hill. jsut keep doing what your doing and he will be fine! youre an awesome suggie-mom! if i was a teacher you and Marcel would get gold stars... wait you are a teacher so give him and yourself one and think of me!! *tight hug* you can do this sweetie!

Okay - I am working late to earn money, basically babysitting kids in long term detention - until 6:45. So, I let Marcel out to crawl around and be on me. He goes right down my shirt - with 7 kids in the class and he has NEVER been there before! I had to sit with my back to them until he decided to crawl back out!

Here's some encouraging words for you, Molly: Magellan has been in an E-collar non-stop since early July...now that's a tail issue from a BAD PLACE ...I had to take him in about 3 weeks ago to my "back-up vet" & she got a little carried away with the amputation she did: he has a hamster stump on his behind. To get to the point here: tonight, I was actually able to put a REGULAR POUCH in his cage and take OFF his E-collar. He actuallly used his PAWS to eat his dinner tonight! When he started this whole ordeal, he weighed 140 grams; right now, he tips the scales at 100 grams. I have faith that every day is going to get a little better. Just remember to breathe & let your guard down every chance you get (while he's sleeping). Things will start to come around, just be patient!

That is encouraging!
How much weight can they lose before it becomes dangerous? Marcel started at 85 grams, and is, as of today down to 74. I can't get him to eat a whole lot.

Molly hang in there. I have a female glider that had to have her tail amputated also, like a hampster. She wouldn't leave the tail in the badges even with a e-collar. Just keep up with the good work you are doing and give it time. I had to give more attention to her during this time and eventually she got better. My prayers are with you. Donna

He's getting alot of attention - the only time he can be without the e-collar is when he's sitting on us. He's been in my shirt since 3 today!

That is encouraging!
How much weight can they lose before it becomes dangerous? Marcel started at 85 grams, and is, as of today down to 74. I can't get him to eat a whole lot. I really don't know the answer to that because it depends on the glider. Dehydration is a bigger problem, but you are watching for that. The only advice I can give is to give him more of what he will eat that's also fattening, like mealworms, corn, peanuts, avocado, yogurt, etc. If you are concerned he's not getting enough calcium & vitamins you can "dust" his treats (very lightly) with Repcal Herptivite & Calcium with Vitamin D. Of Course encourage him to eat his regular food, too, but if he won't, anything is better than nothing!

Molly, have you tried "glider junk"? (not its real name...edited myself to comply with GC rules) It's a combination of avacado, chicken meat, apple juice and ??? It's a rich, HIGH CALORIE concoction that'll help put some grams back on his frame. You're really inspiring me to post some new pics of Magellan, ya know? Even though my digital camera isn't able to "zoom in" like I'd want....maybe it'll help you cope? (maybe I could borrow hubby dear's camera?) I've tried to put him back in with his family (he stressed out BIG TIMES) and to put ONE family member in his cage (that's failed too: THEY stress & he ignores them ) Lemme see what I can do tonight...

He was off his glider 'junk' for awhile. He finally started eating again 2 or 3 nights ago and has actually gained a few grams back! He ate solids for two nights now - pieces of fruit - and avocado, chicken, HPW pollen and a wee bit of bee pollen. (Modified 'junk' if you will! ) He is sleeping without his e-collar, but in the room next to the bed. He is also keeping himself clean and using both hands to eat. ( sounds odd, but these are two things he was not doing well before surgery!) He will not touch anything with honey in it. I really don't know why - I've never had a glider turn it down. But, when I put honey with his avocado, he left it.
