I brought my male glider to the vet today to get a checkup and he has Toxidia. I'm on my way right now to go pick him up and they are going to explain everything to me and he'll be on meds for 10 days.

But I was wondering what is safe to really clean his cage with. I normally wipe it down every other day with a wet rag, but I really wanted to disenfect before I put him back in there.

Coccidia is a small single celled parasite that is generally spread through the feces (poop to mouth).

As with any parasite infection, you are going to want to disinfect/clean/wash everything with a 10% bleach solution frequently (every day if they are having watery diarrhea, every other day if their stool is pretty solid). This means you will probably want to keep fewer toys and all easy to clean toys in your cages until you have retested negative, because it may be easy to reinfect. When I had a Giardia outbreak, I kept only pvc toys (no covers) and a couple of fleece pouches in the cage and would wipe down the pvc every day with a bleach solution and changed/washed the pouches every day as well.

Wash your pouches in hot, hot water with bleach added and dry with high heat. They won't look as nice, but they will at least be disinfected. I would keep a couple of small sets of fleece toys or pvc toys and alternate/wash them every other day.

With bleach, you lead to let it sit on the surface for at least 30 seconds to disinfect, so wipe things down wet and let it sit. As long as the surface has completely dried, the bleach is not harmful (it does not have to be washed off). If you feel more comfortable rinsing it off, just be sure to wait 30 seconds before doing so, or you will not have disinfected your cage/toys properly. thumb

As with any parasite, retest a week after their meds are finished and then every 3 months for the next 6 months (as long as they are all negative) and then 6 months after that to be sure. If they pop positive again, you will have to remedicate everyone again and start all over with testing. I'm sorry that they are sick. I hope they are feeling better soon. hug2

You may want to see if your vet will give you two weeks of the meds also, I'm fighting Coccidia right now as well and per the recommendation of Dr. Tristan we're medicating for 2 weeks (my vet was recommending 5 days on, 3 days off, 5 days on). My gliders are also in hospital cages with a pouch, their water bottle and 1 cage has their wheel. They're being washed twice a day.

Hope your baby is all better soon, I know what a nightmare you're going through! hug2

Ohhh, and make sure when you handle them to disinfect your hands after wards or you can inadvertently spread it. I've been wearing a cover shirt when medicating, using hand sanitizer between each cage and throwing the shirt in the wash with the pouches when I switch them out.

Me and my boyfriend spent over an hour just cleaning out the cage top to bottom tonight and I'm still washing all the toys. The vet gave me two weeks of Albon to give him. I just got my little girl Marley over bacteria and diarrhea and now he has this. Good thing I haven't introduced them yet. I've only had these guys for a month so I guess I'm getting broken in suggie style. I'm in it for the long run though...I love these guys! I'm just so glad that I have found another wonderful vet to take them to.

Is it pretty common for them to get stuff like this?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, it usually depends on where the gliders come from to some extent. Gliders from (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets and similar mills often have parasite infections from the start. frown

I went for 6 1/2 years of glider ownership before having a parasite infection. So, I wouldn't really say it's common, but once you have a glider get sick (with anything) or really stressed, it opens the door for parasite infestation.

You mention not having introduced them yet. Have you had her tested for it? I'm asking because it's highly contagious and even the most innocuous contact can spread it. Only 2 of the 12 I had tested were positive, but my vet has me treating them all. I'm also using extreme caution and sanitizing between visits with each cage.

becki you meantioned it is highly contagious how bad is it? I have one female in the same room not same cage as my new male that tested posative for it. I also have a pair with new babies that are not in the same part of the house as the other two. I just want to not spread this to my other gliders so how cautious do I need to be.

Well, I actually had to take her to the vet a few weeks ago because she had diarrhea and was very dehydrated. She had some sort of bacteria and cysts in her poop. They gave her fluids and some medicine and she is back to normal now, but I am going to bring her in when I bring him back to make sure both of them are in the clear. They have been in seperate rooms the whole time so hopefully I have not spread it. I've had both for over a month but they came from two different cities.
