Dumb question.. but I have to ask...

What is a pouch protective glider? Is it when they hide in the pouch and don't come out? If so, ding ding ding, do I when a prize? Sug is that too.

Thanks

Pouch protective is where you have a glider that when they are in or on the pouch that are crabbing and lunging and biting. But other wise once they are out or totally away from pouch are friendly or not doing any of the above.

It's like they are very protective of their pouch, therefore pouch protective.

Yes and no. Keep in mind that their world might be so stressful because they are so pouch protective that they end up biting and lunging when outside the pouch as well.

Before I put a pouch protective pouch in the cage, Emma would still lunge and bite when outside the pouch; she didn't trust the world around her. But then after I put it in, her actions IN the pouch changed DRAMATICALLY but also her actions outside the pouch did as well! She knows what is going on around her and is able to trust more.

So if they bite, lunge, and crab always in or out of the pouch - a pouch protective pouch, maybe a good idea still!

Also, with my girl Pae, she isn't pouch protective but working with the (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets has been really good for her to learn hand trust and to learn to trust noises that she hears throughout the day.

I'm not sure who came up with it. Bourbon has been doing a lot of the work with us that have gliders like that, but others are doing it too.

I couldn't tell you.

I am doing the work with Bourbon so that is what I understand from our long conversations.

Well gladly I don't think Sug is pouch protective. When she is in the pouch, she hardly crabs at all anymore. And I don't reach into the pouch so I don't know if she would lung. Outside of the pouch she doesn't really do either, she will just run, or if I have something, consider coming closer.

Thanks yall!

Well, cage protective parrots are very very territorial. They have their "space" and don't like anyone to reach into it for any reason. But, out of their space, they are friendly and compliant.

Again - it is a fear tactic. They feel out of control of their environment, and therefore *over control* the one thing they feel they have "dominion" over.

I tend to see pouch protective as the same way - whether or not that is what was intended!

They are not really trying to protect their pouch (such as a dog protecting his favorite bone) as much as they are trying to protect themselves while IN their pouch. Often gliders can feel trapped in their pouch because there is only the one way in or out of it and they can not see outside of it.

When they hear noises coming from outside their pouch, and they don't recognized that sound, it could be very threatening to them. They don't know if it is a "safe" sound or if it is something coming to eat them. Same goes for gliders who fear hands, etc...reaching into their pouch. They may be so afraid of being hurt that they become defensive and will crab, lunge, bite. What ever it takes for them to protect themselves.

who coined descriptive phrases? Who coined descriptions, who refers to the area above us when we are outside with no cover "blue skies" after all they are not scientifically blue, and who decided that the area is a sky?

pouch protective gliders is much like many other animals who acts one way when they are somewhere that may SEEM as they are protecting their area. and MAY be totally different when they are in other places whereas in actually when they are afraid or unsure of what is going on, most animals revert to the basic animal instincts of fight or flight. oooops flight don't necessarily mean flying, could mean running and/or hiding

gliders for years, as in more than 1, have been referred to as pouch protective if they crab, lunge or bite while in their pouch, many times being fine outside of the pouch but NOT ALWAYS.

what is food protective? does that mean they are afraid you are going to take it away? if that is the case then why bite or lunge while the dishes are being put in.

Someone told me tonight about a dog that was kennel protective, he was undone when he was in his kennel, but fine outside of it.

what about the words over protective? does that mean they are protective of the word over?

I have seen my grandson (he is autistic) walk around with his trucks and cars as his security blanket.. OOPS.. no it is NOT really a blanket not made of cloth, but carrying his cars around make him feel good, ooops, I don't mean feel like with his hands and fingers. I mean with his mind. It is his. If you take it away, you would swear his world just blew up.. ooops there I go again, not really blow up as in bombs or anything, and not literally world as in the planet earth, solar system, oceans forests etc. but his state of mind.. oooops not state not like the various areas in a geographical location. When we take him to his "special" classes, they take those cars away from him. well not literally take them away, but he is not allowed to have them while in class, well maybe allowed is not the word to use, well they are not part of the tools they issue us, oooops.. not tools as in hammer, screwdriver, pliers etc. but things we use to help him learn...ooops seems it would be difficult to describe anything that can't be taken LITERALLY by someone...

I see some people want to get real picky of a description of a gliders behavior, I've seen it with the term pitbull biter, I've seen it with reference to the word rape when you place an older male with a younger female. I have seen it with sm's I have seen it with different types of biting, all the way to when a glider just places his teeth, referred many times to nipping.

bottom line is people use words that people can relate to and at least try and get the jest as to what the behavior is you are trying to describe.

as for roxyblonde22's glider, no I don't think your glider is pouch protective, however you glider is showing signs of being afraid or not sure of it's environment.reverting to the basic instinct of flight (running to hide)
it does seem that you are making some great progress with your glider and things are going great I am proud of you, some things take time, and time you have lots of it.

I agree with Bourbon. The poster's glider seems to be coming along just fine. smile

And I have a 20 year old Autistic son. His 'security blankets' are indeed not 'blankets'.
Please do not ask me to 'describe' him, though....that is hard to one who has not dealt with autism. To one who has...it is pretty easy, though-even considering that no two autistics are exactly alike. You can give the example of 'Rain Man' but that isnt' necessariy accurate for any given autistic person. Not even for the one it was based on...Kim Peek, of SLC, UT. Who is nothing like my own autistic son-whose abilities lie in other areas.

In this case, a glider who is pouch protective shouldn't be this hard...a general description is easy-but realize that not all aspects apply to all cases beyond the general-pouch protective is a glider who is not friendly-to people, possibly to other gliders, may be completely bonded and sweet otherwise...might not be-when in his or her pouch-for WHATEVER reason-otherwise outside behavior may vary, sometimes significantly, similar to most Autistic persons. Although they all have Autism...no two are alike.

Bourbon~

Thank you for answering my question and giving me reassurance that my Sug is headed in the right direction... though she may not be moving at the speed limit, at least she is moving!

Thanks!

Thank you Jen for the simple but clear explaination of a pouch protective glider. The definition of a "term" does not always accurately describe all it might include. smile
