Ok, I need some help. I know Metronidazole/Flagyl treats Giardia, but what are the others that can be used with the gliders? I have seen panacur mentioned but my vet said that would absolutely not work and when she checked VIN (Veterinary Information Network) they said it was Flagyl or nothing. (I am not asking for dosages or anything like that, I just need names)

I have used both. I know other people have used panacur too. My vet prefers panacur to flagyl for giardia.

Anything else (since I have already asked and she said 'no' to panacur).

I am more concerned about flagyl as it is NOT an anti-parasitic. It is an anti-amebic and antibacterial medication.

Sorry, one of my drug books did not have it listed as an antiprotozoal. The other did.

See, that's what my vet says also. Thank Cyndie. The recent GliderVet newsletter said there were 3, but when I asked Lisa didn't know them, so I don't know what the other two could be. If anyone does have any more information about another med, I would appreciate it. I have a glider that has an adverse reaction to the Metro and gets very sick with it.

Panacur is not a treatment for giardia or coccidia, it is a good treatment for worms though and relativly safe. My vet prescribed Ditrim (sulfa drug) for coccidia and it can also be used to treat Giardia. Ditrim is an antibotic but it is also a antiprotozoal medication too. Ditrim was used on my glider that had Coccidia and there were no adverse reactions from the drug. My vet hesitates to use Flagyl because he says it can be very harsh on them and gliders can have an adverse reaction.

Some Rx's for Giardia - seek counsel of your veternarian:
Metronidazole (Flagyl) also used against anaerobic bacteria Furazolidone (Furoxone, Neftin) Tinidazole (Tindamax)* Same family as Metronidazole Fenbendazole (Panacur or Safe-Guard) Also used to de-worm Albendazole (Valbazen) Nitazoxanide (Alinia)* FDA approved for Giardia
* FDA approved for Giardia
Furoxone comes in a liquid suspension that is reasonably tasty, so I have used this in children for ease of use or if they couldn't take Flagyl.

Thank you, schlep. We are trying Bactrim right now, since it was recommended, and since the Flagyl makes Kira so sick. She is tolerating it well and seems to be doing ok, so far. We will see when we get fecals re-done. But it is nice to have more alternatives if we still can't get it out of her system.

Fenbendazole has been used when flagyl does not solve the problem or the side effects of flagyl are an issue.
