I have an update!!! Bella has been getting a bit of alone time with me lately, and she is getting sooo sweet! She loves to get in myshirt and crawl around. Well... the last coupple of days, if I lay down on the couch with her under my shirt, she actually crawls out and lays in the crook of my elbow and GOES TO SLEEP!!! I am in awe!

Aww, congrats Robin! Aery...I'm really not sure about the answer to your question, but I bet you will get more answers if you post your question in its own thread

Fantastic Robin!
Hey, you tell Bella she'd better be sweet or the new kids will have to teach her.
Tonight when I went to feed them, Gypsy and Torrey (mom and dad) ran for the food dish....Abby and Gale ran to ME! Gonna be hard to let these two go.

OH NO ITS NOT! LOL You keep telling those girls what a wonderful new Mommy you found for them, and they will be just fine! They have to teach Bella and Donna how well-behaved gliders are supposed to act.

I haven't been in touch with Bourbon in awhile. But I have still been working with my girls. They are sweet as can be now! I can pick them up and they sit in my hand. No crabbing! I mean none! They have learned that I am the treat bringer and my fingers readily dispense yogart when licked! Thank you so much for all your help!

Where can I get a pouch protective pouch? My Bobby could really use one. He has always crabbed at me if I even get near his cage. At the begining he also bit me (real hard) but I continued to work with him. Now I only get an occasional bite and not nearly as hard so we have made progress. He still crabs mostly when he is in his pouch and has not crabbed at me when he is out. So am I correct in thinking that he is pouch protective? So I could really use a (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets to continue the bonding hopefully with out so much crabbing and no bites.

The pouch protective pouch can be purchased here: The Pampered Glider However, I highly recommend that after you purchase it you call Bourbon (her number is in her signature), as she can give you some ideas on how to use it to its fullest potential

Will do! Where in Vegas are you? My older brother lives in Henderson. Are gliders legal there? My brother wants 2 from me as I am a breeder but I didn't think they were legal. My bad, will you confirm that they are? If so then I guess I'll be calling him to say sorry and find out when he is coming to visit so I can get 2 babies ready for him. Thanks again for the advice.

I live in Henderson too, actually. I spend about half the year in Ohio and half in Nevada. Gliders are legal in all of Nevada. There are several Henderson vets that treat gliders (mostly in the Green Valley area) but I use the same vet that Lucky Glider Rescue (in Las Vegas) uses, so if he wants that information after he gets his babies let me know

Let me start by saying thank you Bourbon for being willing to work with me. Really enjoyed our almost 2 hour phone call! After talking to you I took Bobby and put him back in his cage (house). Needless to say he was crabbing. About an hour later I sat in front of his cage with the door open as he played and talked to him. No touching or even putting my hand in the cage. Normally he would have been crabbing the whole time but after the initial crabbing when he realized that I wasn't going to pull him out he stopped. To my amazement he evn came about halfway to the door, this had never happened before, he usually stayed at the back top corner. Because of Nic's ordeal(see Glider loses hind foot in sleeping pouch accident) I don't have any extra hammocks so I couldn't put one in his cage. I did pull out his toy house this morning and will pull his wheel tomorrow (slowly removing to make the loss easier on him. I haven't been able to pull his pouch as I have no where else for him to sleep. But if these signs are anything to go by I can't wait fot the (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets to arrive because I know it'll work. Thanks so much for the pointer to Bourbon! I'll update as soon as (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets comes in and I can put it in his cage.

Does he hide in or behind his wheel? If not, I would leave his wheel for him.

Hey can anyone give me any ideas on way Joey would of become a complete pain in the rear? Houdini is getting so much better. He will now come to me when I open the cage door and no crabbing or lunging. Bella is Bella no changes with her. Joey on the other hand is a completely different story. I did what Bourbon said which was to sit with him in my shirt for a little while a day and that is what I did but he has only gotten worse as Houdini gets better. I dont know if it is because he feels that Houdini can no longer lead. i have no ideas at all. I have put him in a bonding pouch and sat with him but he tries to bite me through the pouch. I have even tried starting from day one again and work my way back up but it has no affect on him at all. It is like he refuses to let me get close or for him to get close to me. Please give me any ideas you may have on why he is doing this.

Something similar happened with my gliders. Pre-Bourbon, my girl would tolerate me, she behaved alright, but we were not close to being bonded. My male was the one that crabbed and lunged allll the time. A bit after I started working with Bourbon my GIRL started to crab and bite and be skittish around me. sounds to me like this is similar to what you are going through. What's happening is that when you start working with your gliders in this way, it extracts all of those insecurities that the glider may have been hiding before. If you started back from the beginning but it had "no effect on him", then shouldn't you still be at step one? It sounds to me like you are not listening to your glider. You are going through the steps based on the amount of time that YOU feel should be spent on each step, not how much time he NEEDS you to spend on each step. I would suggest starting over and not moving on until he shows you that he is ready. A big part of this is learning to read your glider, so pay attention and his body language will show you what he is comfortable with and what he is not.

Hi everyone! Bourbon asked me to update on Bobby so here goes. The (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets works wonders! We have now been working with Bobby for 6 days and the change is AMAZING! The crabbing stopped within 3 days until I broke the routine (BE CONSISTANT!) then he started crabbing again but nothing like he was prior. This lasted for about 12 hours then he not only stopped crabbing but he stopped running to the back of the cage and he even came right up to the door when I had it open and sniffed me! I got so excited that I forgot I was supposed to be talking to him and ran to call Bourbon with the news. Then remembered what I was doing and went back to talk to him. As you can tell by his quick reversal his spirit IS NOT being broken we have just given him a measure of trust. Through this experience I have learned that bonding is NOT trusting. Bobby is beginning to trust me and other humans as seen when he comes to the side of the cage to sniff my husband. Bourbon's method works for building trust and I can't thank her enough! By the way, last night someone bought Bobby so he now has a forever home. I have insisted that he stay with me until Bourbon and I feel he is ready to move and we (Bourbon, myself, and the new owner) know that the move may set him back slightly. So we (Myself and Bourbon if necessary) will walk her through the same steps that have made such a difference for him. P.S. Bobby has graduated from the behavior program and I can't even tell you how much he has changed! He is moving on to his forever home on Sat. the 14th what a sweet valintine for his new momma! Thanks again Bourbon and Dee Dancer! So can I call myself a Bourbonite yet?

Elena and Nancy, don't thank me, I haven't done anything, it was all Bourbon! [I left that blank space above so that Bourbon can come in and say that she didn't do it, you guys are doing all the work, all she's doing is sitting back smoking her cigarette, drinking her Mtn. Dew, blah blah blah (although the part about you guys doing all the work is true )] Nancy, could you tell everyone what your glider was like before you took out the items that could be hidden in or behind, so that they have an idea of where you're starting from?

Hi, sorry to come in in the middle of a post but I'm thinking my rescue is PP and I need some advice to see what I can do to help him. I have had him since January 17th and he has made wonderful progress in a lot of ways but he is still so afraid of everything. I am able to pet him (ocassionally), but no one else has really been able to touch him without bleeding. When I first got him he chose making me bleed over getting hydrated, now he will take yogurt drops from my hands. But that is the only thing he wants, if I offer him something else by hand he chooses to bite my fingers and doesn't want the treat. He also is scared to death if something bumps his pouch or bonding pouch and he skunks a lot. He does come out on his own on occassion and runs around, but doesn't want to be touched. He is also very sensitive about his backside right now, where he overgroomed himself severely. My poor baby had a bald butt, but now fur is starting to grow back Should I treat him like a PP glider? Or should I just see if he continues to improve?

Working with them is not a simple one step process. There are many things that need to take place. First needed is to establish what your routine is with him and then to learn what he is telling you about this routine. Then make adjustments from there.
Each glider is different and each has their own set of body language. Bourbon is really good at helping owners learn to listen to their glider's body language. I would suggest calling her. She can help get you started.

Hi guys,
I haven't been on in a while...I should post a few things here.
First I worked with Bourbon and she did wonders!! =) My boys were crabby at first, and not very nice when they were in their pouch. Now they are my best friends!! lol
I need to thank Bourbon BIG time!! - It had been a while since I had talked with her, and out of the blue I called her in a panic...I went in to say hi to my babies one morning and they weren't there!! - I really started to panic...I hurry and closed the flu on my chimney, and started searching in ALL the places I could think. Bourbon told me it was like trying to find an earring in a barn late at night lol...I was determined to find them. I searched for a few hours and low and behold I found them!! Safe and sound on the top of their cage in the fleece that I have to protect my walls...I was so relieved!! I found a gap in the door on my cage, that was fixed immediately. Thanks Bourbon - your the absolute best!!
I hope everyone is doing really good with their babies!!
