Hi,

I'm new to the group and I have a question.

What exactly is the law about gliders in CA? I'm currently in MN and we are debating about moving to CA and I don't want to give up my boys.

I have heard they are absolutely illegal; you can have them as long as you're not breeding them or trying to sell them; or you can have them with a permit.

Which one is right? Or are they all wrong and it's something entirely different?

Thanks,
Gin and 3 fuzzems

Valorie is correct, they will not even let people drive through California on the way to another state. (People have been stopped at the border of the state and told they must relinquish their animals or drive around).

Not to mention finding vet would be super hard. vets are to report illegal animals and they can be taken from you.

Here's the thing about CA - just about every exotic animal is illegal. They're paranoid about something escaping and destroying the fruits and vegetables since CA supplies the majority (80% what what I heard last)of the produce to the US. It's a HUGE agricultural state. What really doesn't make sense is that ferrets are also illegal in CA yet PetSmart has a whole aisle devoted to ferret food and supplies and they have ferret get togethers. I've even seen that icky glider food there.

Anyways, I've been through the CA-AZ border a few times and the CA-OR, CA-NV borders many times and have seen someone there maybe twice. I've never been asked anything - they just waive me through - not that I encourage the smuggling of illegal animals. LOL I have heard stories of people being questioned and turned back because of gliders and ferrets, though. I jusr haven't seen it.

Most vets are more concerned about the welfare of the animal rather than reporting it and they are actually not required to report an illegal animal anymore. It really isn't that difficult to find a vet - just call around and trust your instincts.

The bigger dilema should by why would you want to move to CA? So Cal's nice but the closer you get to the border with Mexico, the more problems there are with drug cartels, kidnappings, murders, rapes and of course, drugs. Plus that area is super, super expensive. (San Diego's pretty awesome, though..if you have 1/2 a million $$$ for a condo). Anywhere along the coast is expensive and if you move inland the summer's are a nightmare. The taxes are outrageous since they tax you on everything, there really aren't that many jobs and politically it's a complete joke. Schwarzaweenie ran it into the ground. Just sayin'...

Good luck if you do decide to move, though! shakehead

80 acres of paradise in KS
I grew up in North San Diego County. It IS beautiful or I should say, it WAS beautiful. Now it is so over crouded there just doesn't feel like there is any room to breathe anymore. I went to visit a friend about 4 years ago and I could not believe the changes that had taken place since I had been gone.

Yes, the weather is incredible (most of the time). But to find a home with any type of yard and you are looking at more money then I spent on my 3 bedroom, 2 bath home AND my 80 acres.

My grandmother bought her home in 1930 for just $1500. It was sold 5 years ago for 1.8 MILLION. It was only 1/3 of an acre of land too. The house was torn down. The buyers paid that for the land!

I have never been fond of having my neighbors so close to me they can look through my windows and see what brand tooth paste I use! But unless you have MILLIONS of dollars to spend on land, that is how it is now (atleast all along the coast).

I miss the beach more than anyone could ever understand but I sure don't miss the congestion of people.

I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

Just my thought, you are looking to move after your tour is up. You can pick anywhere! I think it is awesome that you are figuring it out now before you need to move! I am sure you'll figure out a great place. The exotic pet laws in CA are really stringent. I wouldn't move there because of that and the cost of living is insane, like others mention. Good luck in your search for the perfect state to live in!!! smile

My sister lives in Hemit (close to Palm Springs) in a 2 million dollar house that you could buy here in Missouri for $100,000. LOL But the weather there is gorgeous!

I'm planning and plotting a move to Washington or Oregon. I actually prefer cooler, rainy climates and being able to walk out the door in the summer without feeling like I was walking into an oven. smile

My hubby's state job will likely turn Federal in a few years so escape might be a possibility then. LOL grin

Suggiegramma - your sister lives near Palm Springs? I went to visit a friend there a few years ago. I got to her house at 10:30 PM, in the beginning of Februaury and it was 93 degrees outside. I think I remember leaving very early the next day. I don't know how people can handle that heat. shakehead

Seriously? I haven't been on GC for awhile, but I thought truthful, honest answers were what folks could get from others here. This is just rumors and bashing.

#1. There is a law in California that specifically protects vets from reporting "illegal" animals. So, you just need to find a vet that specializes in exotics or is willing to learn from colleages.

#2. The "border crossings" are specifically set up to prevent agricultural threats. Home grown produce which could carry diseases.

#3. The only time an illegal like a glider or a ferret is at risk is if someone files a complaint. They have much greater issues than gliders to spend their time on. Even then know the law...they DO NOT snatch your pet away and kill it. You have 72 hours to get your babies out of Dodge.
(Into another state)

I wouldn't really constitute this as an "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all". I didn't read any rude or mean comments. There's a difference in being misinformed and being rude.

Regardless, I wouldn't risk taking my gliders into a state where they're, technically, not allowed.

LOL.... and WHAT is so bad about MN? Let someone here take care of your gliders while you spend a week or two there at a time... believe me, CA gets old, QUICK... although it is quite nice in February.

Personally, I like to live where the fences are made for DOGS, not PEOPLE! (but then again, maybe it's because his family lives in Watts...)

The members are correct in stating that sugar gliders are NOT legal in California, problem is no one backed that up with fact so here it is.

2118. It is unlawful to import, transport, possess, or release
alive into this state, except under a revocable, nontransferable
permit as provided in this chapter and the regulations pertaining
thereto, any wild animal of the following species:

2125. (a) In addition to any other penalty provided by law, any
person who violates this chapter or any regulations implementing this
chapter, is subject to a civil penalty of not less than five hundred
dollars ($500) nor more than ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for each
violation. Except as otherwise provided, any violation of this
chapter or of any regulations implementing this chapter is a
misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for not more
than six months, or by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars
($1,000).
(b) The Attorney General, or the city attorney of the city or the
district attorney or county counsel of the county in which a
violation of this article occurs, may bring a civil action to recover
the civil penalty in subdivision (a) and the costs of seizing and
holding the animal listed in Section 2118, except to the extent that
those costs have already been collected as provided by subdivision
(d). The civil action shall be brought in the county in which the
violation occurs and any penalty imposed shall be transferred to the
Controller for deposit in the Fish and Game Preservation Fund in
accordance with Section 13001.
(c) In an action brought under this section, in addition to the
penalty specified in subdivision (a), the reasonable costs of
investigation, reasonable attorney's fees, and reasonable expert
witness' fees may also be recovered and those amounts shall be
credited to the same operating funds as those from which the
expenditures for those purposes were derived.
(d) (1) If an animal is confiscated because the animal was kept in
contravention of this chapter or any implementing regulations, the
person claiming the animal shall pay to the department or the new
custodian of the animal an amount sufficient to cover all reasonable
expenses expected to be incurred in caring for and providing for the
animal for at least 30 days, including, but not limited to, the
estimated cost of food, medical care, and housing.
(2) If the person claiming the animal fails to comply with the
terms of his or her permit and to regain possession of the animal by
the expiration of the first 30-day period, the department may
euthanize the animal or place the animal with an appropriate wild
animal facility at the end of the 30 days, unless the person claiming
the animal pays all reasonable costs of caring for the animal for a
second 30-day period before the expiration of the first 30-day
period. If the permittee is still not in compliance with the terms of
the permit at the end of the second 30-day period, the department
may euthanize the animal or place the animal in an appropriate wild
animal facility.
(3) The amount of the payments described in paragraphs (1) and (2)
shall be determined by the department, and shall be based on the
current reasonable costs to feed, provide medical care for, and house
the animal. If the person claiming the animal complies with the
terms of his or her permit and regains possession of the animal, any
unused portion of the payments required pursuant to paragraphs (1)
and (2) shall be returned to the person claiming the animal no later
than 90 days after the date on which the person regains possession of
the animal.

2126. (a) Except as otherwise authorized by this code or
regulations made pursuant thereto, it is unlawful for any person to
take any mammal as identified by Section 2118.
(b) This section does not prohibit the euthanasia of a mammal as
appropriately directed by a licensed veterinarian or animal health
technician.
