ive heard many different things! ive heard no they cant be potty trained and others say yes they can. . . so which is it??

Potty training consists of knowing that when they first wake up, they'll immediately need to potty. You can either keep them in their cage till they're done or hold a paper towel under their bottom and hope to catch the pee and poop. Or, you can do what I do and just accept that you're gonna get peed and pooped on! LOL!

I do a combo of Connie's suggestion. I wake them up and let them roam around and do their business in their cage then take them out and realize that I could become a walking toilet at any moment. But, fortunately mine don't usually do more for a while. If we are going from pouch to tent I do the paper towel or kleenex under the bottom or just let them go and play and pick up later.

It also depends on the glider. Roo will pee and pee and pee, for at least 20 min. He's actually marking me, but he does it with a LOT of pee!

Calypso wiggles around in my bra once during the day, climbs out, down my arm to potty, climbs back up, hugs my neck and climbs back in my bra.

Ivory will not potty all day long, even if I get him out in the morning and he stays in my bra till dinnertime.

Kizzy and Tilly will pee and poop in my bra, at least once a day.

If it's noticeable to me, I'll change my bra and shirt, but most of the time I don't even notice it.

I'm not sure what it is, but Connie, you make me giggle! LOL When Bandit & Teeka get up, I generally just hold a paper towel or tissue under them and they go. But 9 times out of 10, in the evenings, we're having cuddle time and my monkeys are hanging out in their pouch on my chest.....they pee...lol. Only then...ugh. lol

Gliders potty train themselves. Most refuse to potty in their own pouch... so when they have to go, they use the bathroom (the bathroom being anywhere other than their pouch... ie. your arm )

I usually let mine run around in their cage before I take them out. This way I avoid the majority of it, but I know I'll become a walking potty at some point. None of my guys will go in my bra or in their bonding pouch (thank goodness!)

I sometimes wonder if it's more Bandit marking than anything - sometimes the pouch is REALLY stinky!!!!! He's a little piggy man! lol

Since I got my male (also Bandit) I notice the pouch gets very stinky also. I'm sure HE thinks it smells wonderful!

All of my males are neutered but Kanani. None of the cages smell bad but his and Serendipity. They have a room to themselves and that room has more odor than the whole glider room which has eight cages! I'm glad he and Serenidpity won't be breeding long!

I don't have much stink in the room where they are, but oh boy, their sleeping pouch and any bonding pouch. As soon as it goes around my neck or on my hip, Bandit gets busy. Apparently, I am HIS! LOL

It's exactly the same here and it seems he more often I change them out, the busier he gets. I buy tons of the Glade solids as I don't want candles or sprays around my cage but don't want a stinky room either. I've thought about putting hidden saucers of odor absorbing baking soda outside the cage to see if that helps. Has anyone tried that and, if so, did it help?

There are actually some wonderful odor absorbing things that I used to buy in Minnesota all the time....I think I got them from Home Depot maybe, or Wal-Mart. There's no scent to them which is nice...but they work wonders! And, you can put them anywhere so there's no worry about the monkeys getting into them!

When we got the (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets pitch, the guy was telling everyone that they couldn't be litterbox trained, but they could easily be trained to go into a trash can. He said you can just hold your hand out and they'd back right up to the edge and voila! Of course they never actually demonstrated this mystical technique.

LMAO.....yep, I remember hearing that when we passed their booth at a pet expo one year. Hilarious! Now, I can just put a tissue under mine and they'll go...but they aren't going to come running out, search for the nearest trash can and go...lol

These are all great techniques to use, but one must realize it is the HUMAN that is trained to read the signs that their glider needs to go and responding by putting the glider in a location of the human's choice (tissue, paper towel, or over a trash can) that makes is convenient for the human.

That is not exactly training the glider to go on its own to a specific spot. I doubt any glider would "hold it" until he or she had a tissue available to go on.

I just accept that one of my brats will go on me sometime or another in the tent even if they have all taken care of business before I get them out of the cage. I think they like to make me smell like the rest of the family.

My gliders tend to wet in one specific spot in their cage when they first wake up. Just like a dog that has been crated over night, they have quite a bit of urine in the 'morning' so it is noticeable where they choose to go most often. The rest of the night is pretty much a free for all.

As for 'training' I think there are things you can do to suggest options for them and they may or may not choose to be that way. What I mean, is that it is possible to convince your glider(s) not to go in their pouch. Once you convince them of this, then there are other things that often follow suit - like letting you know when they have to go and waiting to go (for a few minutes) until they know it is appropriate.

I don't mean when they are up and awake, we all know they go when and where they please when they are playing. I mean during the day (although I have some that do this at night if they are still comfortable in the bra or pouch).

I have a boy that will give short little hiss/grunt noises and pull at the top of his pouch when he has to go potty. Once I put my hand over the pouch and let him know I know, he will settle against my hand for a short time while I try to find an appropriate place for him to go (bathroom. When I open his pouch, he climbs on my hand and I hold him over the toilet where he will usually go both ways, then run back to his pouch and settle in again. I have a girl that does mostly the same thing. She starts wiggling around in my bra and will peak her head out. If I put my hand over her so she can't get out, she will be still for a few moments while I get where she can come out. I take her out and she will sit still in my hand and go (usually on the tissue I put there).

I also have a boy that will pee in his bonding pouch on a regular basis, but not in his cage pouch. (He is not terribly fond of me or of bonding pouches, so I'm pretty sure he does it *on purpose*).

Most of the people that I know of that consider their gliders somewhat 'trained' are those of us that have gliders that will sit still to go potty, so when you pull them out, they have learned to settle where you want them to - on your hand, on the counter, etc. to do their business and then they start moving around again when they are done. At least that is my interpretation and experience.

wow!... well i havent gotten my baby just yet... about a week and a half to go, but i really hope i can convince mine to not use his pouch as a bathroom. . . any suggestions on how to do that?

I really think it's up to each glider on weather or not they want to use their pouch as a bathtroom.
I don't think you will have a problem with that though. Well, with him pooping in his pouch. I don't know if they pee in their pouch but I don't have to clean out any poop.

My male glider refuses to go to the bathroom in his pouch and in my shirt (thank goodness!). I tried to 'potty train' him, but now it seems that he has me trained. Whenever he wakes up, I patiently wait with paper towels on hand and I even let him walk around on it and he will not pee. Poo, yes. No pee.

However, as soon as I let him crawl on my hand or arm he will let loose and all the pee comes out. Better my hand than my shirt.

No matter how long I leave my 4 girls in the cage after they wake up as soon as I open their cage door they come running to me and use me as their bathroom it never fails they do it every single time.

So I just change my shirt and go on playing with them until they do it again. I wash so many shirts a week.

I just tell myself boy they must really love me.

But long enough for me to get a joey or 2 right?

When you take them out (every time) gently dab their cloaca with a moist qtip or tissue. Just like their parents did when they were young, this will help stimulate them to go to the bathroom. Sometimes you have to wait a bit, but the more often you do it, the better/faster they will be. This also helps them learn to stay still to go to the bathroom. Get them straight out of the pouch, don't let them sit there and wake up so they go in their pouch before they climb out. This will help 'teach' them that they like a clean pouch. Having a cage mate that likes a clean pouch can help, too. Kira played a big part in training Dakota not to pee in the pouch because she would crab at him and chase him out of the pouch every time he did.
