I just thought I would put this up so people who arent sure about certain states would know! I hope I put this is in the right place! TO MAKE IT CLEAR I WANT TO KNOW OF ANYWHERE GLIDER'S ARE THOUGHT TO BE ILLEGEL I WILL RECORD ALL THE INFO AND THEN RESEAQRCH IT!!!!! WHAT IS ON THE LIST SO FAR IS NOT PROVEN! although legal in the state, they might still be illegal in the county or city/town within that state Alabama-Legal Alaska-Illegal Arkansas-Legal Arizona-Legal California-Illegal Colorado-Legal Connecticut-Legal Deleware-Legal Florida-Legal Georgia-Illegal (unless purchased from a USDA breeder must have documentation to prove it) Hawaii-Illegal Iowa-Legal Idaho-Legal Illinois-Legal Indiana-Legal Kansas-Legal (illegal in Lawrence KS) Kentucky-Legal Louisianna-Legal Massachusettes-Legal with a permit (but they are not issuing permits making them illegal) Maryland-Legal Maine-Legal with a permit Michigan-Legal Mississippi-Unknown Missouri-Legal Minnesota-Legal Montana-Legal North Carolina-Legal North Dakota-Legal Nebraska-Legal New Hampshire-Legal New Jersey-Unknown New Mexico-Legal with a permit Nevada-Legal New York-Legal (Illegal in The Bronx, Brooklyn,Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island) Ohio-Legal Oklahoma-Legal Oregon-Legal Pennsilvania-Illegal Rhode Island-Unknown South Carolina-Legal South Dakota-Legal Tennessee-Legal Texas-Legal (illegal in Dallas TX) Utah-Legal Virginia-Legal (not legal in Chesterfield Co, Fairfax Co, City of Manassas, Newport News, Prince William Co, and Spotsylvania County.) This law went into effect 2010. Also may want to note that in nearby Nebraska, they are illegal in Omaha city limits. You may contact Omaha Humane Society for all the illegal areas.

you need to have a permit in PA and basically they really do not give out permits so yes they are illegal as a pet to own or buy or sell without a permit.  Yep. Same as Massachusetts. They get around the clause by not issuing the permits when requested.

I am a new owner of a sugar glider, but I live in Ohio is they are leglal to have..however, I wonder why are they illegal in some states?

It's either the entire state, or just a region. It's all about the local laws on exotic pet ownership. There are different reasons for different places.

Why exactly are sugar gliders illegal to have in the 5 boroughs of nyc? It just doesnt make any sense to me that I can just go 10 minutes on the hwy and they are legal (nassau county)

CT is literally 10 minutes away, and all the surrounding states (except PA), have glider's legalized. The main issues are completely taken care of by the fact that a sugar glider could never survive the harsh winters, but clearly the issue of legalizing sugar gliders isnt at the top of MA's to-do list. I question it when a good majority of the states that have glider's legal are much warmer and have a much higher risk of them being able to survive in the wild. Who knows how the government works these days.

Sugar gliders are indeed illegal in the 5 boroughs of NYC. This is in accordance with the NYC health code where it states: "(b) For the purposes of this Code, wild animals are deemed to be any animals which are naturally inclined to do harm and capable of inflicting harm upon human beings and are hereby prohibited pursuant to subsection (a). Such animals shall include: (i) any animals specified by the Commissioner in regulations promulgated pursuant to this section; (ii) any native or exotic wildlife whose possession or sale is prohibited because they are designated as protected or endangered pursuant to any federal, state or local law, regulation, or rule; and (iii) any of the following animals" Where it proceeds to list marsupials and directly sugar and greater gliders. Now, I don't really see how a glider can be considered one prone to inflict harm, and a glider bite, while painful isn't usually what we think of when we think of bodily harm. Could you post the rest of the list from the N states down please. You can't see it from the quote box and I am aplying o grad school soon and I will have 2 suggies by the time I'm ready to move and I need to only apply to states where they are legl and I've been having a har time getting that info, this list would really help. Thank you!

All tho gliders are legal in Missouri they are illegal in the city limits of Sedalia. Also they are illegal in city limits of Omaha Nebraska too. i was curious where this came from? because all I can find on the town is that there's an airport and its halfway between kansas city and st. louis.

Please tell me that these state restrictions are all 100%true!! and if they are, would they be able to change? Because i live in Fort Worth, Texas and my brother was telling me that we have to take extra care for them because no vet here can care for them if they get sick, and also that we couldn't take it to the vet becuase they were illegal? Please respond ASAP!

Texas-Legal (illegal in Dallas TX) They are also illegal in Galveston and possibly Galveston County. A few years back Galveston Humane society seized some in a puppy mill raid and they had to be relocated out of Galveston.
