I don't know if this is an old subject or not, but I keep reading that vegetables are Soooooooo much more important in a glider's diet then fruit and I'm wondering... WHY??? Is it the protein, vitamin and fiber content? Why are veggies MORE important that fruit?

Please note: I'm not asking to be contrary or start any bickering, just want a good explanation/discussion. wink

Nutritionally - fruits and vegetables are about the same as long as you are feeding a wide variety. In spite of their name - gliders do not like everything they eat to be sweet.

Each fruit and vegetables is rich in some vitamins and minerals and poor in others - by feeding a variety you will cover the full spectrum if nutrients these foods offer.

Many gliders eat a smaller amount of fruits than vegetables, especially when they eat some of the diets that are higher in honey. For those gliders, offering a bit more vegetables than fruit ensures they get all they care to eat each night. If they turn their picky little noses up at the fruit and eat all of the vegetables on the plate - they could still be hungry.

Remember variety is the key. Think "colorful" - you do not want to feed ONLY green vegetables or only yellow fruits and carrots or other high vitamin A foods daily.

:agreed:

As mentioned above, most of the diets contain some amount of honey so I think that's where the more veggies concept comes into play. Since honey is so high in sugar, and so are fruits, it would be better to give more veggies than fruit.

However, in the diet I feed, there is no honey at all. So it actually calls for more fruit than veggies. Which, btw, is perfect for my fuzzbutts because they don't like their veggies too much shakehead

So, it does depend on the diet you're using.

Vegetables are indeed more important than fruits.

The vegetables, we believe, are actually replacing some of the complex carbs that gliders get from the gums in Australia. To date, we are not certain the gums we get here in the US from Africa are of the same nutritional content as the gums found in the black wattle trees in Australia.

Fruits are very high in natural sugars as well as very high in Vitamin C. Vitamin C also helps the body to absorb iron into the liver, so high levels are not really needed as it is thought that sugar gliders, like other animals, can also produce their own vitamin c.

Candy, working with the Nutritionist I have been working with, I would have to say this is not actually correct. No matter what diet you are feeding, it has been advised to feed more vegetables than fruit. Not to mention vegetables are better balanced than fruits.

Wonderful, this is the sort of discussion I was looking for. What I really wanted to know was: NUTRITIONALLY, why veggies were dubbed more important than fruit. We have all heard it from our mothers and grandmothers that "You need to eat all your veggies!" For humans Its usually the vitamins and "roughage" our matrons are concerned with, are these our concerns for our gliders?
