I had a question about my glider. He is a nine month old boy. He had to have a penis amputation after he mutilated himself about 3 weeks ago. Since anastesia(sp?) costs so much money, I had him neutered at the same time. He did very well with the surgery and was up and about the same night. he did tear the first incesion but I took him back in and he was glued back together again. Everything seemed fine until the last two days. He seems to be strainig when he poops and seems a little crabbier than usual. I tired to give him an orange last night to loosen his stool, but he's still doing the same thing today. He still seems to be eating/drinking/playing fine. Has anyone else had a glider with a penis amputation? For some reason I think his looks funny, almost like it's sticking out, but I'm not sure.

With an amputation in the very near past, I think I would take him in for a follow up and have your vet check it. It may very well be just constipation, but you have to be careful. Try offering some apple juice with water, citrus baby food, tomatoes or more orange and see if it doesn't loosen him up after a couple days. If it persists, I would def. take him in. Good luck

My vet that I use for both my cats and my sugar gliders is in my hometown (about 5 hours from where I am now). He is the one who did the sugery. I do have a back-up vet where I am now but I don't know him like I know my other vet that I have used for the last three years. He said that he works with gliders but I just don't trust him as much. I only planned on using him in emergency cases. If this doesn't clear up though I'll be sure to take him in in a few days. Tonight I gave some oranges, cherry tomatoes, and apple juice in water. I don't have any gliderade but actually just ordered some from online today, but it won't be here for 2-3 business days.

Why not call your hometown vet and ask if that's normal? Since you're so far away, I'm sure they'll understand and listen to you over the phone.

Have you checked his stool? Is there a normal amount and is it a normal color/consistency?

I'm going to put a call into my vet tomorrow. The vet office is run by friends of the family so I know they won't mind helping me out. His stool seems normal color and consistency. He just seems to sit in one position for a few minutes to push it out. Usually he never even seemed to notice when he would poop. He'd just be running around and let one go, but now sometimes he seems to sit and think about it. I don't seem him do it everything, just mostly when he first wakes up at night. It just seemed a little weird to me. I'll check tomorrow with my vet. I'd hate to have to take him in if it's nothing because the vet here charges $55 just to see him but I guess I won't know if it is something or not unless I take him in

Did your vet by chance run a Urine Analysis on your guy at all?

Most male gliders who have a penis problem...is usually from a Uniary Tract Infection (UTI). Then after that problems with being Constipated is the next cause for self mutilating.

So, if you go back to the vet in the morning...have the vet check his urine if this has not already been done.

For tonight... 1)try to push as much fluids as possible. 2)Give wet foods....fruit and veggies and BML. If on a dry food stable diet...wet it down so it is not dry and hard...then be sure to dump the moistened dry food that is not eaten by morning out as it will spoil. 3) A couple of drops of mineral oil can be given orally. This can be purchased at any Wal-Mart in the pharmacy section or grocery store that is open 24 hours 24/7 in the dept that sells laxatives.

If the penis is out...and will not retract...suggest lubericating it with KY Lubericating Gel. If you have none...then some vasolene is suggested. Keep it moist.

If there is a concern he may or may not mutilate during the night....suggest an E-Collar be put on him just to be on the safe side. It will be uncomfortable...but at least he would not be able to chew himself and do more damage than what he has already done to himself.

My vet did not do a urine analysis. His penis had been out for two days and I was told to put some KY on it to help it go back in. I did that at night and when I got up the next morning, his tip of his penis had turned bright red.I rushed him in that day and my vet did the surgery the following day. My vet believe that maybe he had chewed on himself during the night. He was put on antibiotics after the surgery which my vet told me would help prevent and clear up any infections. He seems to pee fine and not until the last two days have I noticed any constipation. He has no other marking on himself so I don't beleive he is mutilating himself. Does this sound ok? Unfortunately, barely any of the tomatoes or ornages were eaten lat night but some of the apple juice was gone. What else can I do? I have not seen him go yet today so I don't know if it's any better. How serious is this? Should be be taken into a vet or is this something that I can treat from home? I kow there is the not a vet online thing, just need some advice on how serious constipation can be and what can cause it.

Constipation can be caused by a change in foods. Stress from the surgery could also be a factor, or his lack of appetite. But your problem could be something else since he just had surgery down there. I wonder if things are swollen given the trauma of surgery? Have you called your vet friends yet to ask what could be causing this?

Glider should at least be urinating. If nothing...then suggest you call your vet ASAP.

Your little fella may have a blockage due to the surgery which then would require emerg care.

He is urinating fine and his stool seems like the right consistency/color. Sometimes it just seems like his sits in the same place for like a minute just pushing it out. I called my vet and e-mailed pictures of him but the vet said that from what he can tell everything seems to have healed fine. And he too asked if he was urinating ok since they all come out from the same place. I'm not sure what else to do. I may be going back home next weekend so I may just take him in then for a vet visit.

With all that your little guy has been through...a follow visit should be in order.

I called my vet today and made an appointment for Saturday morning. Do you think it would be ok to wait until then, just so long as nothing changes?

Ouch! sounds very painful "Self-mutilation!" Hope your glider is doing good!

Now that brings me a question!

Can it happen to female glider?

IF nothing appears to be out of the ordinary...then you should be able to wait. On the other hand...if his behavior has changed or you notice something is wrong...then call the vet and get your little guy in ASAP.

It can happen to any glider, male, female, old young, alone. mated, with family..

the keys things to know is have an e-collar ready, be familiar with the sm website, where it has loads of info, tests vets should run etc..

it also has the e-collar plans as well as emergency contact numbers for others that have experience in these areas.

the chances of survival is much higher with a female, but the key thing is to catch it before damage is done to the cloacal area.

Petrey is very lucky in the fact his clocal area is not damaged as far as we know..

Kristin is not out of the woods yet, but she is much more prepared than before. This is going to be a long time healing and complications may still be an issue later on.

Kristin is now in contact with Mary H, together they are going to do the best they can, to make him more comfortable.

it is not uncommon for sm's or those with penal amputations to have problems going to the bathroom. she was given several ideas today, as well as ways to help him be more comfortable.
