Well this certainly hasn't been my week for joeys ! After having my twin leucs. cannibalized last week, early this morning I discovered my newly oop joey from another pair on the floor of the cage crying. The cry was on the weak side. Daddy was trying to help it but Mama could've cared less. I tried picking up the joey and gave it to Mama. She licked at it's cloaca for a minute and then jumped away, knocking the joey back to the cage floor. I picked up the joey again and gave it a more thorough check over. It's on the dehydrated side, the skin on the belly is dry and a little flaky, the gliding membrane looks a little wrinkly and dry, and I did the pinch skin tent test and the skin stayed up for a minute (I don't know if skin tenting is normal or not in a new joey??). Also I didn't think there was any milk in the belly (but I don't know if I'm looking for the white area correctly...) So after last week's disaster and seeing how this Mama didn't seem to care, I decided to pull the joey. I don't know if I did the right thing... maybe just supplementing would be okay . But after losing the 2 joeys to cannibalizing only a week ago, I just don't think I could take it if this one got cannibalized too. I'm just too nervous to take a chance leaving it with the parents. Anyway, I've now read over Suz's site. I need to know what I can feed it for now? I don't feed BML, so I don't have what I need for joey BML, nor do I own a blender. I'd like to feed the formula Suz's suggests (Glideraide mixed with Wombaroo or puppy milk and a little baby cereal). I don't have any Glideraide though. I'm going to order it today, but I need to know what's best to feed in the meantime while I'm waiting for it to arrive. I have Ebsilac puppy milk (which I've now already used this morning) and I also have Wombaroo Possum Milk Replacer >0.8, but I don't know if this is the right kind. I know there's a few different types of Wombaroo. I also have Ensure, since I feed Darcy's diet, but I don't know if this is any good for a new joey. So for anyone who's hand-raised a joey, what do you think is best to use until the Glideraide arrives? Also, if people suggest the Wombaroo, then how do I mix it? The directions on the box are only for mixing the whole package at once and then it says it only lasts 1 day in the fridge. I'd like to be able to only mix up small amounts at a time but don't know the right concentration... Is it 2 parts water to 1 part powder, like the puppy milk or something else? And then also, how do I stimulate the joey to go potty exactly? I have q-tips, but do I rub that around the whole cloaca or just "tickle" the little part that sticks out or??? And how often? One site says twice a day, Suz's site says after each feed...

Sadly I am not a big help but I am dealing with two rejected joeys this morning also. Mine are much older though. But on this thread: http://www.sugarglider.net/ubbthreads/ub...true#Post202822suz told me what I should do, at least for now. Good luck with your little one and you're in my prayers.

I have some joey experience, you can read about how we care for them here: http://home.comcast.net/~angie_and_jerald/rejected.html I usually stimulate them to potty after each feeding till they start going on their own. I don't know about the fourmula or the glideraide, sorry, we don't use that. Hopefully someone will be here soon that can help you with that. I am keeping you and your baby in my thoughts and prayers. Angie

I am so sorry you are going through this. Is there any one near you that does feed BML or has the glideraide on hand? I know that this joey won't make it until the glideraide you ordered gets to you with out any other food source.

With my rejected joey Duncan, I fed him the Esbilac puppy milk for the first week then when it got here, I added Impact colostrum replacer to the puppy milk. This is what I fed him until he was 5 weeks oop. Then I started mixing 3/4 puppy milk, 1/4 baby bml and gradually switched him over to BML. I never used the glideraide.
Just make sure you keep him warm. If he is cold, he will not eat.
I also stimulated Duncan after each feeding.
Other that directing you to Suz's site, I'm not sure what else I can suggest...

Thanks everyone. No, there's no one near me. I live in rural IL not really near anyone else... Thanks Teresa. That helps knowing you just did the puppy milk at first and never used the Glideraide. The joey is a girl. She's been in my bra all day so she's been nice and warm. So far she seems to be doing okay. I didn't think she was eating all that much, but she's already pooped twice today so far, so something must be going in ! I'm heading to the store now to buy a heating pad and fish tank thermometer for an "incubator". I think I have everything else I need for that. Oh and the exciting news about her, she's a WFB/WT and 33% leuc. het! The WT was a total surprise! It never occurred to me that her parents had any WT potential. But once I saw her WT, I went and checked the parents pedigrees again and realized they both come from WT lines. I totally missed that before! LOL ! Her mom, Moya, is out of Sheila's Haley. Moya's twin sister is a WT platinum. Then the joeys daddy, my boy Talyn, his mother had a WT joey in the past with a different partner than Talyn's daddy.

Since the joey is dehydrated (tenting is not normal) then I suggest combining the Esbilac with Pedilyte 50:50 for now. Although the formula on my site calls for Gliderade, it's not 100% necessary. The first joey I ever hand-raised I just used the Pedialyte/Esbilac combo & she was just fine. Feel free to call me if you have more questions: 440-953-0904. Good luck & I'll be praying for this little one.

Thanks for everyone's help and support... but I'm sad to say the joey didn't survive. I just went to get her out of my bra for her next feeding and she was dead . The weird thing is even with her up against my skin, I hadn't realized she died. I didn't feel anything strange. And I'd felt her move recently, so she couldn't have been dead for very long. I think there must have been something wrong with her internally that the parents must have sensed, and that's why she was rejected. I'm sad and disappointed. But at least I can take comfort in knowing I tried to help her and I did my best for her. But it sure has been a bad week for me joey-wise ...

I'm thinking about you. Sorry about the babies. My little girl died in my bra too. It was like she was there one minute and gone the next.
