Today when I took the gliders out I noticed a lump near the rectum area of one of my gliders, Meka. I had taken her out yesterday and I saw absolutely nothing abnormal. She hisses while she goes to the bathroom (although our vet says that it does not seem abnormal because he can find nothing abnormal and no physical reason for why she is doing this.) But, back on the topic.. I found this lump and so my mom and I are going to take Meka to the vet tomorrow just to make sure nothing is wrong.. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Kristi

The lump is near the rectum? How close is it on the cloaca? This sounds to me like your baby is having a hard time going to the bathroom because she may have an infection or very hard stools. Some times this can be treated by giving your baby some juice(not suggesting to avoid the vet by any means), other than apple, but more often then not if she has a lump she needs to go to the vet for some good meds. If your current vet does not see anything wrong with this "lump" I would personally get a second opinion. Best of luck to you! Your baby will be in my thoughts!!!

sounds like an absessed anal gland, once the swelling reaches a certain point it will be seen beside rather then right on the anus. immediate vet treatment is required to fix it before it worsens,in major cases of it surgery is required,if necassary the gland can even be removed, usually that option is not considered unless its really bad or u have recurring problems with it. the hissing while using the bathroom is likely due to the discomfort of it all. good luck, keep us posted on how it goes

I just got back from the vet, and our vet is awsome. He is always so calm and takes things marvelously. He examined her clocoa area and said that it did indeed look like a absess. He gave me some meds. to give her. He isn't sure exactly what caused the absess but I am due back to the vet next Monday for a check-up! I hope it isn't serious.. but he is hoping that the meds. should help her. We are both worried about the lump because he said that the lump is so near to her clocoa and also it has a greenish yellow tint. I really hope she'll be alright. But I'll be keeping a sharp eye on her for these next 7 days. thanks for keeping Meka in your thoughts, and I'll be sure to update you all with anything new that comes up! [:"magenta"] ick, this sounds just awful. will she eat pitted prunes/plums or drink prune juice? that might loosen up her stools and help her feel better. also, some citrus would not hurt (just do not give her too much of it, or give it too often.) i would also keep an ecollar handy. call me paranoid, but i think it is better to be safe than sorry. i will keep your little one in my thoughts. please keep us updated.[/]

If this abcess is on her cloaca I would not recommend giving her citrus anything, as it's very acidic and may cause her more discomfort. I would just keep her on the meds and keep a close eye on her. When Sebastian had a problem like this (nothing green) I kept a little journal (still do) of the noises he made and how frequent it was. I worry a lot so, I just wanted it handy to compare the begining of the infection to when it was cleared up. That way I could see if the hissing stopped. I know I'm silly but that is just want I do for my sanity.
Good luck with your little one, I hope she feels better soon.

The lump looks like it would be painful, but the vet noticed that it didn't seem to bother her that much which is good (even when he applied pressure to the lump). I am still worried because it is so close to the clocoa. The vet said that he couldn't tell exactly what it was b/c it would not show up in the x-ray but he said all he could do was prescribe meds, keep a close eye, and schedule another appointment next Mon. As of now she seems no different. She isn't seeming to have any trouble deficating or anything, and she is eating well. I can only hope for the best thanks for all your help guys! Kristi

Kristi, It's great to hear you little one can 'go' without trouble. Have you noticed the 'lump' getting any smaller? Great job!

thanks! Yes, suprisingly, she doesn't seem to seem to be having any problem going to the bathroom, nor seem to be in any pain at all.. it looks pretty bad though.. It doesn't seem to be getting any smaller either. All I can do is wait.. I am due back to the vets on Monday.

I just took her out just now and she went to the bathroom A LOT and hissed only once.. I guess that's better then before. However, I know that she hissed when going to the bathroom before this absess ever came to place. I am really worried about her. I also noticed that the absess had a light dot on one of the sides, does that mean that it is going to pop soon? I am really confused.. The vet said that it was best to just keep a close eye on it, and letting it pop on it's own (IF it is infact an absess. He is not completely posisitve..) would prolly be better than him trying to pop it.

yea! I have good news.. or GREAT news! I just took Meka out of her cage and the absess is gone! At first I thought I took the wrong suggie out! I see nothing were the absess used to be.. not even a scratch or anything! I am so relieved.. but it's not over quite yet. The vet had told me that an absess was like a cut that healed over to fast and when she would push down her clocoa area, tiny blotches of blood would appear. He thinks it's because the cut might be like inside..? And I know that after an absess pops you are supposed to clean it out.. ugg.. But it is still a great relief!

me too! I am soo relieved right now. whoo -whipes off sweat- I was so worried about her.. as of yesterday I was planning on going in this morning instead of Monday (my exotic vet works on Mondays) because it seemed as if the absess had completely engulfed her clocoa area.. I was so upset I was begging to think things would never get better! Right now her clocoa area looks normal, except for a little redness (kinda like a pimple after you just popped it ) but it is so small to the point of actually squinting to try and find it! She is still due back to the vets on Monday however, just in case!
