We lost Rhett today. He got caught up in his pouch two weeks ago. He was twisted up so bad that it took a few painful minutes to get him free. No loose threads, soft cotten? pouch. He just got his nails caught and could not free himself. We visited our local vet who treated him with batril, azium, calcium w/glucose. But nothing helped. He was eating and able to function, but he seemed be crippled in his hind end and weak in the front also. He ate and cooed just fine. He crabbed a little more than usual and seemed to be itching alot. He did not want to be held and I was afraid that I would hurt him more so I limited handling him. Dr. Stahl, at Pender, was wonderful. He said that our local vet did everything right. If I had gotten him to them sooner and given a little stronger dose of azium it may have helped - but he thinks it was incorrectible. Rhett had started chewing his sides and was in alot more pain than I knew. The spine damage was right below his rib cage - two-three compressed discs and twisting - Dr. S was amazed that he was functioning as well as he was. The exam and Xrays showed that he was in good shape otherwise, bones strong, good weight etc. The vet was impressed with the Leadbeater diet's results. He did recommend that I start giving them crickets again and gave me some good advice on maintaining my own healthy crickets. I had stopped feeding them after all the problems this summer. Is there somewhere I can document all the advice and info he gave me so that we can all share it in the future?
I have taken all my pouches out and am using boxes instead for sleeping. I still use my bonding pouches. I did not make this particular pouch but bought it because it was so soft, evidently the threads were too loose in the fabric.- Wish I had taken someone with me to the vet, because if poor litte guy was not dead - he would have died. I wrecked my car (think I totalled it) and he went flying. Guess I shook up the poor rescue guys until I explained who Rhett was. I was not seriously hurt (thank you God) but now I have a grieving glider mate, broken heart, and sore body and spirit. PLEASE check your pouches and gliders often. I am so glad that I wake mine up to eat and check them so often - I would really have been upset if I had not checked on him that particular evening, as it was I hope he wasn't tied up like that all day while I was at work. Sorry this is so long - I wanted tomake sure I gave all the important info.
Take care all...and love on those babies.
Debi
Baby :{
Deedlit and Solo
<><
[This message has been edited by Debi (edited 12-22-2001).]
[This message has been edited by Debi (edited 12-22-2001).]

I am sorry for the loss of your glider. Are you OK? It sounds like this accident was just like adding insult to injury. I will keep you and our dear departed friend in my thought and prayers. It is just depressing to think about, especially this time of year. Maybe Santa will bring you a new glider just in time for Christmas? You could name him in memory of Rhett. Again, my deepest sympathies.
John (Rocky & Adrienne)

You mentioned wanting to know how to care for Crickets. Goto:
http://www.wormman.com
He has all the info and stuff you would ever need to raise lots of different bugs.
Also, I am sorry for your loss, it's so hard to lose a friend. I always concider pets as friends, because they aren't just an animal. They are there when you need comfort. I was a little upset about something last night, and I shed a tear or two. It's almost like my little TJ knew I was sad, he just stared at me and was like "What's wrong daddy?" It was very comforting. Anyhow, I will pray for you, and you should get better soon!

Debi, why don't you post what you learned about crickets under the Health & Hygiene topic? I know I'd be really interested in hearing about what your vet had to say.

Debi,
Oh I'm so sorry this had to happen. My condolences go out to you. I usually try to check the pouches from time to time. I even wash them during the week and alternate from one to another, but now I'm gonna keep a closer look at it and of there little claws. Thanks you very much for posting your story, although is very sad, but this makes us more aware of checking our pouches often, specially after we wash them cuz sometimes that's when some strings come loose. Sorry again and I hope you feel better soon.
Liz & her critters (Flaps []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/heart.gif[/]'s Gizmo)

Another loss......One of our babies, male, about6 months old. Not relate to Rhett. Got his foot caught in his pouch. When his Mom (a friend) got him loose, he seemed okay, but was shivering (just like Rhett). She found him dead the next morning - that was last week. He was in one of my pouches with the Shirpa (sp) lining. She said that she checks her pouches frequently - especially after Rhett died. Her little girl was really lonely as well as my girl "Baby".
Both families are doing much better now that.. sweet Marie fixed us both up - with brothers. Had a little problem though - My Baby wanted them both for herself - LOL. I will write something in health about the vets advice. Thanks for your kind words and thoughts. Debi

Ok
Keep a small pair of scissors by your washing machine. Before you wash them the threads may not be loose, but after you wash them you might need a snip []images/icons/rolleyes.gif" border="0[/]

I had a similar incident happen to one of my gliders fortunately there was little injury and no mutilation. The glider survived. After that I permanently switched to a chinchilla dust bath. You might want to yr it it is safe, easy to clean, and translucent yet concealing.

I know how hard it is to lose your furry friend.. I did, and my greatest sympathies and prayers are flying your way! I hope that you'll be ok, along with your other gliders!

It is horrable when they get their nails stuck, but I clip my gliders, so most of the time, this doesn't happen. I have had no problems with pouches, but thank you much for the warning.

Rhett will be waiting for you to join him at the rainbow bridge!

Hello...Ushuaia (SP..sorry),

You mentioned that you switched to a chinchilla dust bath....with the dust or without??? A while back I asked someone on here...don't remember who it was, but I asked if it would be safe to use a chin dust bath and they said the dust/sand would not be safe...what are your thoughts on this???

Please let me know,

Thanks,

Tammy

You would use the dustbath *without* putting the sand in...

Tammy,
I think Ushuaia meant the chin dust bath HOUSE. It's very sturdy and it hangs on most cages, you can put your old t-shirt in there for them to use as their bedding.
