Here's the first part of her story:

http://www.sugarglider.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/254341/page/4#Post254341

Her last extractions were on 5/5. She did go in on 5/15 to have the wire stabilizing her lower jaw tightened...but the swelling has been staying down enough to wait. Until now.

Night before last, her face didn't look bad (swelling was really minimal)...but she was swatting at her face. frown We looked but couldn't find anything obvious. So yesterday I called and made a vet appointment to have it checked (she goes in at 10am today). Her facial swelling had gotten worse also. Last night after her meds, looked in her mouth again, closer, and wouldn't you know it but that danged wire SOMEHOW slipped, and now instead of stabilizing her jaw and those bottom teeth, got over one of them and is now in BETWEEN! That has GOT to hurt! cry It still looked fine under her chin-which is what clued us in before...I have no idea how she managed this. Or what they'll need to do-if they'll have to replace it, or what. That is the exact place we don't want it-it's there to keep infection from doing that. upset

So later this morning should be an adventure. I'll update when we get home.

Chris-she's in a nestbox instead of a pouch since this started (I can tell you Riker wasn't happy having to give them up) because I didn't want anything pressing against her face-only one blankie in there...nothing in the cage I can think of she's catching it on...any ideas where she might be catching the darn thing? The wheel maybe? I just don't know where to look, and she can't keep doing this-they can only fix it so many times, and with what she did I don't know if they can. upset Any ideas, anyone?

Can she be doing it herself Jen? Either going after it with her hands or rubbing her face along the cage? I see my Jack scatch his back from time to time by rubbing it against the cage. If this wire is irrating her, she could be doing just that also.

Poor baby- I hope they find some relief for you and her. hug2

Nancy, that would have been my thought too.....that maybe when she's grooming she pushes at it. As for ways to keep it from happening again, Jen I really don't know. Nicky never had "braces" to keep his front teeth in place.

I'll update tonight, since I've now been up over 24 hours...they did remove the wire, and she seems more comfortable that way. Other than that, some good news (for now) and some iffy news...I'll post when I can think straight, lol.

Well. tounge Not sure where to start. Guess with the wire.

Dr. Harris put Lyah under to get a good look (and I LOVE it when I get to watch!) and at first, said- "It's not in the wrong place"....

SAY WHAT!!??

It looked good under her chin...then when she touched it (with the probe) in her mouth the wire moved...A LOT. Ahhh...I WASN'T seeing things! lol. So she had loosened it, and it was between her teeth the night before (thought I was losing it for a minute). So she checked out the teeth it's been stabilizing...one (the right front) is barely moving, and the left front has completely tightened down! laugh That's a good thing if we can keep it that way. So the wire is out, and we need to keep her on the soft foods and we'll see how she does. None of her remaining teeth were loose. grin

However....

The upper right front tooth (the ones that make them look so cute) is dying and turning black...although it's not loose. We'll have to keep a close watch on that one.

So for now, all is stable, and she seems a little more comfortable without the wire. The swelling in her face wasn't bad last night (she'll be on antibiotics a while yet with the open wound where the wire WAS in her face/chin, until that closes) and I'll see how she looks this morning when I get home. Her gums have healed beautifully where the teeth have been removed. And keep our fingers crossed we can lick this thing!

She weighed in at 182 grams.

Kind of mixed news, eh? I'm glad the wire was able to come out of the bottom jaw - that's great progress clap But sad about the upper front tooth cry
Thanks for keeping us updated hug2

Jen, I'm glad that she doesn't need the wire anymore & that her teeth have stabelized. I hope this is an upswing for you two & the beginning of the end of her peridontal problems.

Well, mostly stabilized. We counted the teeth she has left at her last visit on the second, and there are only 9. Since we've removed 14, that means some obligingly left on their own. crazy

She has ONE issue remaining-those lower two incisors, one of which is still loose (but not loose enough). Her face keeps getting infected on/off, and she bleeds half the time if we bump it when giving meds. vet doesn't want to remove them for fear of damaging her jaw, until she can get some imput from other vets that have dealt with them, so for now, 7 of the 9 are solid, stable, not infected, and her gums look great except with those 2 lower fronts. So for now we wait (and keep repeating antibiotics as needed).

The ones she has left are:
1 upper back left molar
1 upper right molar
3 (full arcade) lower right molars
2 upper front incisors
2 lower front incisors

So for now we keep infection under control, watch, and wait. Hopefully (though it's a real longshot at this point) they 'fix' themselves. If not, they will have to come out eventually, one way or another, to stop the infections.

Poor girl.

We don't have new info on Lyah, so to speak. Her front teeth still bleed if you bump them with the syringe with meds, or if she tries to eat something too hard-like the other day when hubby "forgot" and gave her a yogurt drop mad The poor thing!

I said "and HOW do you think she's going to eat it!!??" shakehead "She has NINE teeth left...9! And 2 don't even work!" He was just sitting there not realizing she was actually trying to choke on it in her desperation to eat it!

She was trying SO hard, though, she loves them! I feel criminal that she rarely gets one any more. upset I had to take it away while she desperately tried to hold on to it, and go crush one up for her. Poor thing was SO confused!

Anyway, Aug 2 we go in for new Xrays, since a day or two off meds and her face swells right back up. We'll be looking for infection into bone in her jaw-a deep seated abscess that would show up on Xray. If it's there, she could need months to indefinite antibiotics to keep it controlled, or it can and will spread and become systemic.

I'll update after the vet.

Oh Jen - that's such a sad, pathetic image - poor little thing loves her yoggies! I'm glad you thought to crush one for her.

I hope things go really well on August 2nd. I'll be thinking of you two, and waiting for an update.

hug2

She will never enjoy them again like she did, unless I squish them into powder-she only has a few very back teeth- unusable for chewing-as only one has another tooth under it. frown I can mash them for her, but that's the only way she can eat them. If I could at least get her off the antibiotics it would be nice, though that isn't looking likely any time soon. Thanks for the thought anyway! smile
