Oh Meggan, I'm so sorry that your joey is continuing to fight with the eye infection It does appear as if the eye may have ruptured and the inner portion (likely the corneal lens) came out. Please let us know what the vet says in the morning. If it was the cornea that came out then the vet will probably need to remove the rest of the eye Please call me if you need me home: 440-953-0904 cell: 440-520-4799
It wouldn't be the cornea. That is the front part of the eyeball (the part you set your contact lens on or the part that they reshape when you have Lasik eye surgery). More likely is that it is the vitreous or possibly the lens. The lens would probably be harder and not quite as large and perfectly round. The vitreous is the clear "jelly" that fills the back part of the eye.
I wonder if what your little joey had was congenital glaucoma rather than an eye infection. Glaucoma causes the pressure to go up in the eye. If the pressure was high enough, it could cause a rupture.
I agree Hope needs to see her vet and they will probably clean out the socket and set it up to heal over. She'll most likely do fine monocularly (just ask Jack, Bourbon's one-eyed glider!) especially since it's happening at such a young age. However, see if the vet can check the pressure in the other eye. I'm not sure how they check intra-ocular pressure in gliders, but I've heard of it being done. You want to at least establish a baseline IOP in the other eye so you'll know if it does develop glaucoma. If it was congenital glaucoma, she may or may not have it in the other eye, but if she does and it is caught early, it can probably be treated. However, I don't know what the side effects of glaucoma meds would be in a glider.

Thank you all for the information and support. I am taking her to the vet this morning to have them look at it. She is still doing great other then that so I figured I would be fine waiting until today to take her. I will update you all once I find out. She was on 2 antibiotics one called Cefadroxil which she was put on first and then when her eye still was looking horrible they put her on this also Chloramphenicol, they also had us doing an eye drop. This all started the end of October so it has been a real fight for her. Her brother got the infection but we were able to start him on the first med and it cleared right up. I was concerned that since they were rejected that maybe I wasnt giving them all they needed but the vet said that they are very healthy other then the eye. I am feeding them Suz's joey formula and they really are just big pigs At least it is only the 1 eye being an issue rather then anything else. Well I am off to work and then to the vet. I will update you all once I find out what is going on. Thank you again for all the support

I'm so sorry that you and little Hope are going through this, but she's so lucky to have you looking after her; no wonder she's not worried. I hope you found something out at the vet today, let us know when you can. Prayers and hugs to you both!

Thank you all for the support and help! Sorry for the delay in responding... Well we went to the vet yesterday and it appears that the lens is what came out. The vet said that even though we were using antibiotics the infection just was to bad. The infection put so much pressure on the eye that it made the lens burst. She is doing awesome though! They will be doing surgery tomorrow to remove the remaining eye parts(sorry all I am not in any way medical savvy ) they will then close the socket so that she will not get any more infections in there. They said she will be fine with the 1 eye and that she will get the hang of moving around with only 1 eye soon. She really is a trooper and has been through so much. It makes me so sad. First her mom rejects her and then her eye. Ughh Well I will let you all know after the surgery. It will probably be Friday before I can respond. These little joey's just keep me so dang busy Thank you again for all the support. I do not know what I would have done without you all

Meggan, I'm so sorry that she continues to struggle with this infection She will do great with just one eye, but you may need to make accomodations in her cage because she will no longer have any depth perception. For my Pika, when she was blind in just one eye, I put up a shelf hammock at the mid-height of the cage so that if she jumped and miscalculated the distance, she would have a soft landing. It worked well for her.
Sorry... I was tired the other morning and not fully thinking yet when I said that I thought it was the cornea that had come out. I KNEW that wasn't right, but just couldn't bend my mind around eye anatomy... a couple hours later it hit me "DOH! The crystalline lens, NOT the cornea!" but by then, Sundra (PeeperKeeper) had already posted, so I didn't bother to correct myself I was an optician for 15 years, so I DO know eye anatomy... Oh well :/
Ok so we are home from the vet. Hope did amazing during surgery and is still doing great. They sewed it shut and she is doing pretty good. She is trying to get use to it but is having some issues. I was planning to introduce them to there mom and dad but since the eye surgery I am not so sure. I think I will need to rethink it all now. So they will take her stitches out in 2 weeks. I am so sad when I look at her but then so relieved that her eye infection issue is almost over. Thank you all again.

Megr Thank you for the update. I've been worried about her and am so happy to hear that the surgery went well. I can't imagine what your feeling for her right now. I would say that it would be best to wait before putting her in with the family. Here is a helpful link that will give you some ideas on how to set up her cage so that it will be easier and safer for her to get around. Caring for Blind Gliders Note: I will find more info for you, even though she still has one good eye, this will give you some ideas to get started. Sending you tons of hugs ......
I'm going to move this into our "Special Needs" forum for you.

Thank you so much for the link. I am going to look for a new cage just for the joeys. I am planning on getting him fixed so no inbreeding happens. The information from that link really will help me with the setup of the new cage.
Today see is doing better. She is scared but is eating and doing well. I am watching her closely because I do not want her to pull the stitches out or anything. I am just so happy that she is doing so well. Thanks again everyone for the support.

Poor little baby....I'm sure she is scared, just give her extra love and attention for the next few days so that she realizes that your helping her. It's been a tough road for her so far, but without all the love and care that you've given her she wouldn't be doing this well. Did your vet send her home with any pain medication? Also, did they put her on antibiotics? Just wondering, because I didn't see it mentioned. Sending her tons of hugs...and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Oooh poor little one! I hope she heals quickly! Send her lots of extra love and hugs from us. I was just wondering ... do you have a cone on her head? Can't remember what they call it for gliders? To keep her from being able to reach her stitches? Just don't want her to hurt herself. Maybe I missed that somewhere. Take care little Hope!

Well it has been a bit since I last posted about Hope and her eye. She is doing awesome. The stitches will come out this week. They did keep her on antibiotics for a week and then she did have some pain meds that I gave her for a couple of days. She is doing so good and I wanted everyone to see so here are some pics of her The pictures may seem sad but really she looks so much better and she is doing a lot better as well.
