Sarah, please don't leave Glider Central. We can help with your
diet with your other gliders as well. What your glider had has a few names: Hypocalcemia, Calcium Deficiency, HLP (Hind Leg Paralysis), and can be due to more that one cause:
1. Low dietary calcium
2. Inability to aborb what is in the
diet, due to infection, or genetics
3. Secondary to infection or parasites
I know you're hurting.
My first glider, Cmdr. Riker, also had "HLP", in his case he was MILL bred - where he came from has over 3,000 breeding pairs, and the "BROKER" who sold him to me, completely inexperienced 5+ years ago, was only concerned for the money he brought ($250.00 for JUST the glider) and not his welfare. The dietary and care information that came with him was not right. He almost died. If not for Glider Central and the
vet, he would have. It took WEEKS of around the clock nursing, calcium supplements, forcefeedings, to keep him alive and pull him through. His back legs and ribs are twisted and malformed because of it. He turned 5 years old in December.
I am SO sorry for your loss.
"There, but for the Grace of God (and Glider Central) went Mine"...we can help. Please post your
diet, and read other members posts-you're far from the first owner to lose a glider to this, and far from the first to not be given the right information with you little ones. We want to trust the ones who sell them, thinking "surely they MUST know" but it's not always the case. With a newer exotic not native to this country it's rarer than you may think that the right information goes with them.
