I woke up this morning to find one of Mirame's joeys lieing at the bottem of the cage, cold and lifeless. I reached in to pick her up and shockingly, she was still alive. I check the other pouch to see how the other little girl is doing and she has an empty stomch and a nipped nose. I've never had to deal with rejected joeys before and the timing couldn't be worse for me... Right now, I have them both in my bra trying to warm them up. They are both still alive, but I'm having a hard time warming up the one I found on the bottem of the cage and the one I found in the pouch seems to be afraid to nurse. The one at the bottem of the cage seems like a fighter though and I have another female that is nursing joeys right now. I'm going to try and supliment them for a while and then I'm going to see if I can hold my other female still long enough for them to start nursing. Maybe if they smell like her, she'll accept them... Wish me luck.

I hope it works for you. With the flyers I know they rub the pee of the moms baby on the rejected joeys to trick the mom into take them. Gross but it worked for them. Best wishes hun I'll say a prayer for you and the babies.

Well, lost Pria, the joey I found cold on the bottem of the cage. The other joey won't hand feed... Doesn't try to lick, swallow, nurse anything when I hand fed her. I tried putting her on my other nursing female and she tried nursing from her, but didn'thave much luck. I tried holding mom so she could nurse from her, but as soon as she started nursing she pulls away like she doesn't like the taste.

Has anybody ever heard of a female gliders milk souring? I know it happens in some other animals... The females produce bad milk, so that babies don't want to drink it.

Oh, gosh, Leyna, we were posting at about the same time. I sure wish I knew what to say, but I have never gone through the joey experience yet.

By any chance do you have one of those French Catheter #5 things? I had one on my Emergency Glider Care Kit and some Wombaroo Milk Replacer... maybe you could feed her that way?

Going to Yahoo Messenger if that is quicker for you.

Tiny babies that are difficult to warm up when found ... usually are severely dehydrated and also are suffering from low blood sugar. So, without the help of a sub-q'ing of fluids with 5% Dextrose... the babies are almost impossible to save as usually they refuse to be fed.

My suggestion is to have a vet help you by showing you how to rehydrate little ones who are in trouble.

I am so sorry about the loss of the one baby and do hope the second one will survive.

Mirame ended up killing the other little girl when she tried to nurse... I tried hand feeding her, but she wasn't interested. She did nurse a little off of my other female, but I don't think she liked her milk very much (her joeys are 7 weeks OOP, so I don't think her milk is as sweet). I even had her nursing off of 2 of my female mice, was that ever a crazy site! And suprizingly, it kind of worked. They filled her up enough for her to settle down a little, so I put her back with Mirame. A while later, I heard her fussing and I went to check on her in the pouch and right as I got over there, Mirame was biting down on her poor little head... I think Mirame's pouch is irritated. I'm going to take her to the vet next week and see if I can get her some pain meds. I'm also thinking about getting a pair of rats so that if I ever have a joey rejected again, I might have a possible ratty nurse maid. Since the nursing of my mice kind of worked and rat pups are about the size of baby gliders... At the very least, it's worth a try.

Being that sugar gliders are very territorial... the baby may have had odors from the other sugar glider and/or odors from the mice when nursing. When the baby glider was returned to it's own Mother, she may have detected the odors resulting with a not so happy ending.

I am so sorry about the loss of the little ones.

Judie, she was with mom for several hours after being nursed by the other animals. I found her at 6 am. I lost the first little girl at 9:15... I had been trying to get them to nurse off of the other female for quite some time. The joey and mommy were doing wonderfully until she went and tried to nurse. I heard her fussing and went to look on her and right when I looked in, she was trieing to nurse and Mirame was starting to bite down on her. Momma and baby were doing fine until she was trying to nurse and I actually noticed problems hte day before yesterday with Pria trying to nurse, so I started suplimenting her that night. I was very careful in regards to scent. I kept the little girl wrapped in a blankie from Mirame and Brodey's pouch while I was letting her nurse and I put her back in with just Brodey first so he could groom and mark her (which he did)...

As I said, Mirame is going to the vet as soon as possible (most likely Tuesday).

Oh Leyna, you did your very best and that is all one can do. Mother Nature at times just does not seem fair.

Poor Mirame's pouch is very red I think she does have a pouch infection. I'm calling my vet first thing tomorrow morning so she can take a look at her...

Well, Mirame went to the vet this morning... The vet said that her pouch was really inflamed, but does not look infected. It's slightly swollen and it puffs out a little right now... Mirame is now on an anti-inflamitory/pain killer and I have swab her pouch with this balm stuff... vet is also having a C&S done on her pouch, but said that the balm should take care of whatever might show up, so it's more for educational purposes... If only you guys could see her pouch, it's no wonder that she wasn't letting her joeys nurse! Right now, she's getting lots of love and mealies. I even gave her a pinky mouse this morning for a treat. And, she's getting to stay with my non-breeding pair Smegal and Ladybird until she recovers, who she just loves
