Hi,
Just curious... is there any such thing as a totally solid black glider?

Yeah that's what I was thinking.... a totally black suggie would be gorgeous, that's why I was wondering.

This subject comes up about once a year or so and although at one time there were some reports of melanistic (all black) gliders, there was never any proof of their existence. They would be beautiful, but they simply don't exist

There's a lot of old topics about this... sadly, as of yet, there aren't any. Although we can selectively breed black beauties for darker and darker colors (wider bands), a true black glider would take either some sort of genetic intervention or mutation, which is unlikely, since almost every single mutation that happens in animals is actually harmful. I think our best bet is to study up on genetics and learn how to inject melanin into eggs. After all, they've done it with other animals- have you seen the tie-dye and glow-in-the-dark kitties? Edit: of course, the bad thing about this is that there's no way to pass it on. The animal, if bred, would not produce more colored animals.

The simple thought of it is disturbing. Where do you come up with these things?

I'm not saying I support it, but if you want a black glider that's just about the only way to do it, and exactly what harm does it cause the animal? And I'm not the one coming up with this. Please PM me for the link. I am curious, though, as to what you are intending to imply by "these things".

I don't think she meant to be offensive, but was kidding, in an off-handish sort of way Please try to remember that it is difficult to read intent into typed words

I am curious, though, as to what you are intending to imply by "these things". I know YOU didn't come up with it...I just don't support genetic manipulation AT ALL!!! What I meant by when I said "where do you come up with these things?" is what made you think of that? I guess it's just strange...maybe because trying to get a glow in the dark glider, or a black for that matter, through gene splicing wasn't the first thing I thought of. Sorry if I took it wrong. It's just...to some...it's a touchy subject!!!

Do you think that genetic alteration could get some black gliders, or would they be totally blasted by the glider community? Personally, I don't think it would go over well in the glider community...HOWEVER, I'm not everybody and can only say that I wouldn't approve. Afterall, where would it end? First an all black glider, then a glow in the dark, then every color of the rainbow.

I don't mean to turn this into a different topic... but, what's the problem? I mean, we already have designer pets- non-shedding dog mixes, pink zebra fish, and others. As long as it doesn't cause harm to the animal, I don't see a reason not to turn your glider bright pink. I mean, sure, some people don't like it... I personally think designer dogs are too frilly looking for me, but if you want one, go for it. Now, of course, the health of the animal should ALWAYS come first, but if they found a way to do it safely... how does it negatively affect the animal's life? I'm a very practical person, so if something doesn't affect an animal's life, but makes its owner happier to have it (thereby probably raising the animal's standard of living), then I don't have a problem with it. I mean, do those of you with leucistic gliders treat your leus differently? I mean, you are likely to be naturally concerned with the monetary investment... but just because it is a leu, do you put it up on a wall somewhere and mistreat it? I think not.

I believe one day it will be a freak of nature that one of these unique colored babies will pop up. But again that would be in the long, long far away future........ After we are all over the rainbow playing will all of our babies. JMO Anita PS: I believe I remember along time ago reading about a glider's fur being pink due to something in it's diet and the altitude or something. just can't remember.

You know, this topic just rocked me when I saw it. I fell asleep today after not sleeping for about 36 hours and in my dream, there was a black glider. Instead of the trademark black stripes though, the stripes were more a muted brown.
When I woke up, I was going to ask if there was such a thing as a black glider and then I see this posting. I think I need more sleep...lol

well...if you think about it a lue could change colors...depending on the fruit it ate...like a really juicy strawberry (or strawberry juice) could stain its fur and make it maybe light pinkish red. (around its mouth anyway...unless it rolled in strawberry juice.lol)

Edit: of course, the bad thing about this is that there's no way to pass it on. The animal, if bred, would not produce more colored animals. Actually a lot of mutations are neutral, meaning they do nothing, rather than harmful. Especially for a captive animal that is not acted upon by natural selection as much as its wild counterparts, many mutations are not necessarily "bad." (Example: leucism would be "bad" for a wild glider...they'd get eaten in a heartbeat! But it's a highly prized trait in captive gliders!) And no, they did not make fluorescent animals by injecting melanin. It's definitely not that simple. They actually had to alter the DNA of the animal and use a vector to splice in a gene that would express the fluorescence. And you are correct that this would not be passed on unless they injected it into a germline cell, like a sperm or an egg. I'm not sure if they accomplished that or not, as far as I know you're correct that they did not.

I wouldnt be intrested in black gliders. Blacks one of my favorite colors, and though it might be cute, I just dont see a reason for it. Why cant we just be happy with the colors they already are, is what im saying.
Also, Im sure it would involve experimenting with them, and i never agree with experimenting on an animal. I can see someone inbreeding Black beuties to try and get a black glider. And well, I just dont agree with that at all. No matter how its done. I dont trust people enough to try and do it, sadly, sometimes the health of the animal isnt in the highest regard.

At the same time - how do we know how it truly does effect an animal? We cannot know how they feel. What they feel. If I were to not know how to speak or show emotion, pain, or anything... You would not know how I am truly affected by things. How are we to know exactly what happens to them when dna is altered as it is? There is no true way.

Good points. After all, if someone mentioned making a glow in the dark human, everyone would freak out. It would be like breeding humans for blond hair and blue eyes. People encourage other people they are beautiful no matter what, and 'god made them that way'. Why dont people see animals like that, why do we have to want to change them into something that we find more pleasing?
But everyones just fine experimenting with animals. Animals just cant say no u.u Not fair.
**I dont mean to sound mean if I do. I'm not accusing anyone here of any of this.**

Lol, Virginia, that reminds me of when I got my leu Bartok. I got him from KB the same time Karin got her Armani. Well, in order to be able to tell Armani from Bartok, KC used food coloring to dye his backside, lol. It didn't really work though, because he groomed it right out. Apparently he doesn't like being pink...
