Hello all! I have had gliders for 5 years and have been breeding them for about 3 years now (I only have 2 pairs who are my pets ) and have been thinking about getting a colored breeding pair for a LOOOONG time now... the first time I saw a pic of a leu I spent the entire day scouring the internet for more! I know that the Leu line is relatively small so finding two leu's to breed together that are not related is fairly difficult... and I know that the mosaics have some sterility issues... but what would you think about a leu/mosaic pair? Does anyone have experience with this combination? What do the joeys look like? Would it be better to have a leu/leu het pair or mosaic/mosaic het pair? I still want to do some more research/planning/saving/looking before I make the decision to buy a pair, but more knowledge can't hurt can it? Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks!

It's fine, so long at their background makes them a good pair. Also, don't breed a mosaic from sterile lines to a leu because that will introduce the mosaic sterility into the leu lines. It needs to be a mosaic from non-sterile lines.

Thank you! I understand the issue with the sterile lines... I would be sure to get a Mosaic from non-sterile lines.
If I were to breed a leu to a Mosaic... would the joeys have color or would they be leus? I am not sure which is dominant...

there are enough leu's out there that I believe if you do your research you can find leu/leu het's that are more than 5 generations apart......there is (to my understanding) no mosaic hets as it is a co-dominant gene.....you only need one parent to express the coloring for a 50/50 chance......I know of one breeder who has a mosaic paired to a leu....all the babies have been mosaic 100%leu hets but that is my only knowledge as far as that goes.....I have a mosaic girl who is 100% het for leu but she carries sterility in her lines so she is going with a little wfb boy who has no leu lineage to help breed out (hopefully) the sterility.....hope that helps.... also, the leu is a recessive gene so both parents need to carry the gene in order to have the chance of having a leu baby

Thank you! That is really helpful, I did not know Mosaic was co-dominant. Then is it possible for a leu to have Mosaic in their genes or is leu simply recessive? In that case I suppose a Leu with a Mosaic and leu het pair would be the best bet? I would like to have leus and Mosaics...

To get a leu, the mosaic would have to carry the leu gene. Otherwise babies would be normals or mosaics. They would all be 100% leu hets if one parent is leu. None would BE leu though. Now, if the mosaic were also a het, they could be leu depending on if the mosaic was a 100% het or a lower het. The lower het would have to prove out, making it a 100% het.

If a glider has the mosaic gene, it will be a mosaic. So if you have a leu, it is a leu and there the mosaic gene was not passed onto it.

Thanks again, I think I understand now.
A mosaic can be a het for leu, but since leu is recessive, for a glider to show the leu color, they cannot be het for anything else.
Also, if I wanted both leu joeys and mosaic joeys, I would have to have a leu glider and a mosaic leu het glider...
right?
Thanks again!

I allowed one of my pet pairs to breed...one is a Leu, one a Mosaic/100% leu het. They have had one set of joey's..both leu's.

I myself own a Double Het whose name is Schezwan (Leucistic/WF Blonde). She is paired to a standard colored 100% Leu Het male named Pai and she produces Leucistic, WF Blonde and the standard gray 100% Leu Hets.
xD Those are Louie's grandparents! He just produced a WFB baby, so the line continues! Until he gets snipped, like his daddy... hehehehe. Make sure the ones you get are from outstanding lines! If you plan on breeding, don't skimp on quality! I've decided that I like rescuing... so for me any will be welcome, but when it comes to breeding, quality of line, temperament, and health are of utmost importance! Good luck!
