I know this is a basic question, but do gliders give birth inside their pouch or outside the pouch and find their way to the pouch? The nipples are inside the pouch right?
Maple's Pregnant....atleast I think she is. She's getting pretty "hefty" and has a big lump on the right side of her tummy. Once she has the joey, will her lump be gone from the right to the center higher up on her stomach? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

The joey is born and then it makes the trip up and into the pouch. The lump you see is the actual joey in her pouch. When the joey is born, the lump goes away.

MizzBoo, Your reply is close, but not quite right. In marsupials, the joeys are born very, very small. In the case of gliders, they are about the size of a grain of rice, and the gestation time (the time they are actually "pregnant" is only 16 days. You will not be able to tell if the female glider is "pregnant" visually, at least not in the mammillian (as in dogs, cats, people, etc) sence of being pregnant. The joey then crawls to the pouch on it's own, and attaches to a nipple (which is inside the pouch). The joey will stay there for about 2 1/2 months (IIRC). The joey will almost be undetectable for over a month as it grows in the pouch. Marsupials are kinda weird in their "births". They have 2 of them. the first is what everyone considers as being born....ie...that they come from the mother's womb. The second, is when the joey comes out of the mothers pouch, which we refer to as coming "Out Of Pouch", or OOP. We usually say what a gliders age is, starting from it's OOP date. Don't ask me why, but that is the way it has always been done.

I don't believe it's true. I think a glider baby can be detected right from the beginning. I had a female for a month, and she got pregnant. WHen the joey went in the pouch, I could feel it right away.

Pretty much I have found that mommies pouches look a little different than they normally do. When the babies are born, they are rather small, but probably about 5 or 6 grains of rice would be more accurate. They are about the size of a baby pea... and if your female is nice enough, she may even let you rub her belly... if there is a baby in there, more times than not, you'll be able to feel that baby pea!

OK...my bad!!! I meant undetectable visually. Even though all of my gliders are pets first, then breeders, most of them are more content to be on me, rather than let me cuddle and probe them to be positive they are carrying joeys. However, I have become quite adept at detecting joeys visually fairly early during the "second pregnancy" (the ITP stage).

Poking or prodding is not necessary. One should be able to feel the babies just by rubbing the belly gently.
