Get him to a vet ASAP. Those black spots are dead, necrotic tissue (like gangrene in humans). The spot might spread and they might have to cut the whole thing off. Or it could swell, stop him from urinating, killing him. Or the infection could spread into his body killing him that way. None of this is good, and it can spread FAST!!! Go to an emergency vet if you can find one and go now!

I had this happen in January; get him to a vet! Mine happened over New Year's weekend and no emergency vet would take him. By Monday when my vet opened he was nearly dead, Luckily my vet is very knowledgable in sugar gliders; neutered him and cut off him whole penis and made a new "opening" for him and he is still living a happy life to this day. He may need antibiotics to fight the infection. Good luck and get him medical attention ASAP!!!!

This happens when a glider has been chewing on himself..or self mutilating. He needs a vet ASAP, and would recommend shotgun treatment with antibiotics, and a painkiller on hand just in case. Also, you want an ecollar , just in case he tries to do more damage (I recommend him being IN one-the more damage he does, the worse his prognosis for survival). This is not something you want to wait on or play around with...a glider who is SMing's life is on the line, and they can do enough damage to kill themselves very quickly. They can tear their own abdoment apart in under an hour. There is a sticky at the top of this forum on how to make an ecollar.

Have you noticed him making any crabbing type sounds lately? They're not exactly like a crab, but more of a crab/hiss with a note of pain in it. Some gliders that mutilate will make the noise and some won't. Regardless, the necrotic (dead/black) tissue can spread, and a vet is an immediate need, not an option. Some main causes are infection (like a UTI, or urinary tract infection)...injury, such as getting it caught, or even playing with it too much himself and causing an injury, or even sexual frustration for an unneutered adult male without a mate.

Please keep us updated on your guy, and PLEASE get him into a vet. If you need help, I am on the emergency contact list for the mutilators..my cell number is 435-640-9438, and I'll be up at work all night. Home number 435-783-6097, and someone will be there, also.

However...and this is VERY IMPORTANT---DO NOT let the vet amputate anything but the dead tissue, IF there's enough it needs to come off...it is not necessary and can make things worse. Some vets seem to want to do that...DON'T LET THEM. A very, very small spot may shed on it's own. If it spreads or gets bigger, then amputation of a very small piece may be necessary...BUT ONLY TO HEALTHY, LIVE tissue so it can heal. The collar will prevent him from doing more damage, either now or while healing.

And to add..amputation alone will NOT fix the problem. Whatever is causing this needs treated, hence the antibiotics even if they can't find anything. Neutering may help also to prevent a recurrence later...but AFTER treatment.

This poor baby. My heart goes out to you. Please don't hesitate to get this one to the vet. Xfilefan (unfortunately) has experience on this. She isn't just regurgatating stuff she has read. Please follow her advice. It can save your gliders life.

XFileFan was trying to reply but lost connection with GC so here is what she wanted to say:

you may need to stay up with him to watch and prevent him from doing any more damage if he is not in a collar.
And about what average vet costs are..like office visit, tests, meds etc..

Also feel free to call her cell number anytime day or night if you need to.

I have no idea what your vet will charge.

For tonight, the important thing is to prevent him from doing any more damage. Please keep him on you so you can make sure he doesn't do damage to himself. It will be a long night but it is so important you don't leave him unwatched.

I just went through my glider self mutilating his tail.

With his clocoa area, they can do fatal damage fairly quickly, sometimes in just minutes. I know you are scared but you can do this.

I will pm you my phone number and if you need to talk during the night, please don't hesitate to call me or Jen (Xfilefan). She already gave you her numbers.

Here is some of what I was attempting to post earlier, when I lost GC...

My daytime vet charges $39 for an office visit (nighttime ER vet is $65, but everything else the same)..Urinalysis will run around $20..Antibiotics between $15 and $20, painkillers somewhat less. I don't have any idea what a surgical procedure would run for this, since the only ones of those I've had to have are neuters..but neuters at my vet run about $100 per glider, including meds. Keep in mind that from area to area, vet charges may differ widely. Most are willing to work with you in an emergency situation...either to make payments, or to delay payment until payday, but again, depends on the vet.

And as Dancing said...keep him with you, especially with no collar, to make sure he does no more damage. You can either try wrapping him in a towel, or put a washcloth or blankie between his teeth and his privates if he attempts to go after himself (Riker chewed my hand up for about 3-4 days while I tried to find out what was wrong, and then get an e collar made and on him). Mutilators are very determined, and treats will seldom distract them from this, so you have to be vigilant.

I am available any time for a SM glider..so don't worry about time..call if you need to. Please know that you are not alone in this, and we are here for you. Let us know what happens at the vet.

[:"green"]One of my gliders, Cricky, had a very small dark spot on the tip of his penis this past April. I took him to the vet as soon as I was able to & she immediately put him on antibiotics (SMZ-TMP) & pain meds (MetaCam). Because the spot was so small, she did not amputate it but had me keep a very close eye on him. Within a few days, the tip of his penis came off. There has been no further damage or necropsis since then.
As everyone else has told you, immediate vet care is important in this situation. Get your little guy into your vet today! Please keep us updated as to what happens with him... We're all praying for you & the little guy .

great news..
took Bandit to the doctor. he said that his penis was not going all the way back in so it was drying and so Bandit was chewing on it and it wasn't very serious so they gave me some medicing for him. I am going to get him a girl glider in January, and get him neutered next week so I don't have little Bandits running around. j/k

GREAT news! What meds did he give you? Frequently when they're not retracting, it's due to injury or UTI. Also, if he's out..make sure it never gets dry-looking. Use K-Y on a qtip as often as necessary to keep it moist, until he starts retracting it all the way on his own. And keep us updated on his progress!

Unless I am wrong Tritop is a topical ointment that comes in a little tube. It is to be applied to the affected area.

I would have thought that the vet would at least have prescribed antibiotics! Watch the little guy closely. You could have the beginning of something that could develope into a serious problem.

I would strongly suggest you go back and read the advice given by Xfilefan. In these cases Clavamox or Baytril antibiotics are the standard medication prescribed. Along with the regular moistening with KY jelly.

I talked to the doctor he said the medicine had antibiotics in it. he said that if it isn't helping him any to bring him back in and he will go from there. he said that the spot is not very big at all so the ointment will most likely treat it.
will neutering him most likely stop him from doing this to hismself?.. if so I can get that done next week.

The problem is...if it's a UTI or other infection in there...a topical won't fix it. It HAS to be oral antibiotics (because a topical will not reach the bladder, where a UTI is. I'd hate to see more damage done because the wrong thing is being treated. A topical will help if the end of the penis itself is infected, but will do nothing for a UTI. Please ask for an oral antibiotic...like I mentioned earlier..fatal damage takes very little time to happen. You can go to bed, and wake up to find a critical or dead glider. I just don't want you or him to go thru that. Please call and ask the vet...take a printout of this thread if you need to-he can even call me. I am VERY worried about your little one right now.

And all neutering will do is hide the symptoms-the problem will still be there. If it gets bad enough, he'll simply start chewing thru his abdomen instead. That's not the answer until the cause of this is treated and well. SM happens when a glider is in pain or extreme discomfort...they think they are under attack, and attack back trying to make it stop..not realizing they're making it worse. Vicious cycle in action. PLEASE call the vet back and see if he'll fill some Baytril or Clavamox (10-14 day course) you can just go in and pick up. I'm BEGGING for his sake

Please listen to Jen. He needs oral antibiotics. We are not vets but have experienced many gliders with the same symptoms your glider has. Treating the injury is not the solution. You need to be treating the cause as well as the injury. The topical antibiotics will not enter the gliders system and properly treat the underlying cause.

I talked to my vet about Bandit. he said that he had did an exam on him and that it was not a UTI. he said theonly thing that was wrong with him was that his penis was not retracting all the way and it was drying out and that was why he was chewing. please tell me again if this is wrong. thanks!!!!

Please don't take this the wrong way...but maybe you need to find another vet. It doesn't hang out to that point unless an infection or injury is present. When healthy, it may hang out some, but will fully retract. When it doesnt'--there is a problem. We've dealt with a lot of mutilators, and it doesn't "Just Happen". Even a vet can be wrong, esp. when they have little to no experience with this type scenario. He NEEDS an oral antibiotic.

The gliders penis will naturally dry out if it is hanging out. The problem that needs to be addressed is why is it hanging out? It is most likely from a UTI but there is a possibality that it is a build up of calcium crystals. You need a better vet!

yeah you need a better vet. That happened to my little Herman (not really little I guess... he was 6) and he ended up having a UTI and the tissue died. His penis had to be amptutated. You need a vet that can handle this situation if surgery becomes nesessary. Good luck and keep us updated!
