If he isn't retracting it it could be because of an urinary tract infection or some other possible medical problem. You need to keep it lubricated with KY jelly, or vaseline to keep it from drying out and you need to take him to the vet. The sooner the better. If it is an infection, it could lead to self mutilation. If the penis dries out, it could cause the tissue to die requireing a partial or complete amputation of the penis. vet attention is strongly advised.

KY'd after a foodlion run. So I have him distracted with a cherry for now, but what if he keeps licking it off?
P.S., sorry for the chapstick comment, that was bad! I was a bit frazzled.

Ky won't hurt him..just keep an eye on it and reapply as necessary to keep it moist. Right now the immediate problem is keeping it from drying out, which can cause as much damage as an infection while waiting to get seen. Let us know how the vet visit goes.

Z deserves a medal for being such a handsome man. He only bit Dr Thomas twice. I'm loaded up with surgical type swabs, lube mixed with dex (swelling) and lidocane (any discomfort/bad taste). He of course still licks it. I am to apply it whenever it pops back out, and gently re-insert. She said it still looked very healthy and it was worth trying to 'save'. We'll see how everything progresses. My poor little man.

be very careful with the lidocane. He will lick it and it will numb his tongue and could lead to him biting his tongue. Did they do a Urine Anlysis for bacterial infection? If he has a UTI, this needs to be treated with an antibiotic or the problem will continue and can get much worse very quickly. Keep a close eye on him and have an e-coller handy incase you have to use it. If he goes after himself, he can do fatal damage very very quickly.

aww, should I just go back to the regular ky and swabs at night then? She didn't do any tests, because he went on the vet table and didn't have any problems. I'll make an e-collar right now. P.S. what is the sm website talked about in the e-collar post? Is there another collar I can make? just checking the options to be prepared.

I'm surprised they didn't test for that myself, while they had him there...... I have never had to make an e-collar, but I have been meaning to make one to place in my emergency kit, here's the post with an attachement: e collar sticky And here is one from another post, can't remember who's, but I saved it to my favorites with intentions of making one: e collar web pageI know Teresa just went through the e-collar business recently and seems like I remember she might have a different one she made than one of these, but not sure. Hope your little guy gets better soon, keep us posted!

No I did not get a urinary test. I'm afraid that maybe it was because I just got my baby and my emergancy fund was not adaquete. (they allowed me a one time only post date check) I know. I feel terrible. Friday I get paid but I don't know if it can wait. What can I do? the glider vet is also only available Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Most vets will work something out with you. You should call and get him in there, or just show up with him and wait for an available spot, they'll see him and work the details out with you for your payday, go on Thursday. Are there no other vets in your area you can go to?

With the urine sample, couldn't you just collect one & run it in to them to test? You shouldn't really have to take your baby with you or wait, at least I don't with my vet if it's just a urine sample or fecal I want them to test. Just be sure that the sample you take in is fresh, because I'm not sure how long they can store in the refrigerator before they start to break down.

A test is a good idea, tho keep in mind something may or may not show up on it. It depends on what is going on in there. A UTI is the highest likelihood, but something else can happen as well. I would also not recommend the lidocaine unless the glider is in a collar and cannot lick it...you don't need damage to his mouth on top of everything else. You can get a urine sample for the vet at home, with a med syringe, but you need to be careful not to contaminate it more than absolutely necessary (no such thing as a sterile environment in a home, usually). What I have done, is to sterilize a glass plate with boiling water, then allow the plate to air dry. Make sure a syringe to pull up the urine is clean, dry, and sterilized as well. When you're ready, wake up the glider, and set him on the plate..they usually go when they've just woken up. It may take a couple of tries. Then pull the urine up into the syringe, and put it in a clean baggie. It can stay in the fridge for up to 12 hours (it has to be to the vet within that time, or it will be no good-the less time the better) and they can test from there. It's ideal to have the vet do this, but if that can't happen, it can be done this way. In these cases I usually tell people to INSIST on a shotgun treatment of antibiotics (which means, test or no, results or not, tho it's always better to have something to work with, it isn't always possible-treat anyway). 14 days of a broad spectrum antibiotic like Baytril. This is because if a glider progressis to self mutilating, it can take very little time for them to cause fatal damage to themselves, they may or may not make the distinctive noise to let you know there's a problem, and in some cases there's no warning when they start at all. If you need to, call the vet and see if they can prescribe an antibiotic you can pick up. I would make a collar (the sticky post is above), practice putting it on him, just in case you need it, and keep it on hand. Here is the link to the SM site: GliderHealth Website If he does get worse, or you need immediate help with a collar, I am always available by phone for this: H 435-783-6097 Cell: 435-640-9438 In the meantime, keep a VERY close eye on him, get up often to check on him, and make sure he doesn't damage himself. Things tend to get a lot harder and go downhill from there if he does. The more you can keep him with you, the less chance of damage. If you can trade off watching him with someone, so someone is always there, that's ideal. Keep us updated.

I got very lucky in my work situation, because little man is with me all day, and in my bed room at night when out to play. I bought all the things for a collar last night and am in the process of figuring out how it all goes together. Last night he pee-d and poop'd and I was a witness. I will definately call my vet about the urine test, right now. I bet Z is ready for mom to leave him alone by now! I notice, that at night, when he's out and playing, I only had to tuck him in once (and maybe that was his normal time.) Do you think he's just that relaxed during the day? What if I'm messing with it and he actually wants it out? What I did last night was just use the KY, and during the day used the mixture I was given. I figure as he's in my pouch I feel him move, and so far when I apply it he does not lick it off. He is such a sound sleeper. When I apply it I don't even have to hold him, I just lift his tail after I manipulate the pouch so his bum is sticking out. Incase, I have all sorts of things to distract him, cherries, egg, mealies.... How long do you think it takes lidocane to wear off? If he doesn't sleep so soundly I won't use it. I only seem to want to try and keep using it for the dex, since there 'seems' to be no pain.

It's Friday! yeah, well :-< Zeebo was just dropped off to Dr Thomas to get neutered. We're hoping that maybe it's just hormones that make him want to curl up with 'himself' wrapped in his four little paws while sleeping during the day. If it weren't gross, it would be cute. I really think I have to get him a teddy bear. In most of these cases, Dr Thomas said these gliders are all individuals, but some type of stress is generally the cause. I'm hoping that in Z's case, it's hormonal stress and not bad mommy stress. We don't believe it is a matter of him not being able to put it back in, just not wanting to (btw he pulled 90% or more of it back in while playing at night) Still, the time out could lead to infections and necrotic tissue. She also said that if it's possible and will not make passing fecal matter an issue, she will add a little 'purse stitch' (which I assume will dissolve later) to keep his penis internal. We're trying not to have to cut it off because it is still very healthy tissue. If he gets the purse stitch, my poor little boy will be wearing a collar. He will also be getting an antibiotic in case while recovering he scrapes himself an/or has an infection.
From here, you know just as much as I. I will be getting a call from Dr Thomas when she is done what Zeebo needs to have done.
I also expressed to Dr T, everyones concern about the lidocane mixture. The way she explained it, is that Lidocane is not on the same slobber faced, slack mouthed level as novacaine. It should not make him lose control or not feel his tongue. Most of the point was to make it taste bad, and cover any possible pain. At most, she said it may make his tongue feel funny, but I saw that Zeebo had no problems eating or drinking at night. He has been very healthy.
Also, as a side note to everyone who helped me thus far, thank you. I needed it.

Do NOT put any kind of a stitch in a glider's cloacal region unless you want SERIOUS issues and complications! I have never heard of a SINGLE case that turned out good. It traps bacteria, and makes it difficult for them to eliminate, and the risk of SM goes up dramatically. All my hopes this does it for your little guy, but DO NOT let them stitch it, PLEASE! (And it also won't keep it from hanging out.)

Here's a hug- If they put one in, take him back and tell them to take it out. If it hadn't been for other gliders having had it done, we wouldnt' know that it wasn't a good thing. I don't know what posses vets in these cases to think it is, especially with an animal like a marsupial-where everything comes out the same place. All the gliders I've seen have it done have ended up with more issues than they started with, and we just don't want that to happen to your little guy. Let us know how things went.

SO, things are looking up for my little man. Dr Thomas did not put a stitch in there. I think I over-exagerated in my head about that. When I picked him up in the afternoon I asked if she had, and she said that that was only something she would do on a drastic occasion, becuase it opens up a whole 'nother can of worms like you explained.
My little man still has his pom poms, loves his Baytril, and I only gave him some pain medication last evening/night for my peace of mind. Zeebo was his playful happy self and has left the site alone. Hopefully, this will stop his little problem.
What is the average time it takes for the testosterone to leave the system?

Usually 4 to 8 weeks until their little body is cleared of hormones. I'm so glad no stitch went in..you seem to have a vet that thinks! Hoping this does it for him...if not, have him tested (or re tested) for a UTI (and keep an ecollar in your glider supplies just in case-it's one of those things it is hoped you never have to use, but is invaluable to have on hand if you need one).

Thanks so much for you help! Since it takes awhile for the hormones to be gone, do you think that I should still hold off on introducing his hopefully to be roomates. Obviously they aren't even in the same room yet. I would only be putting Togepi and Pikachu in the same room maybe next week.

Considering where they came from and what you said about how dirty everything was I think I would get a wellness check done first. Even if you took in fecals to Dr. Thomas to look at. Better safe than sorry.
