I wanted to update everyone on Chance. To give a bit of background info, Chance was advertised for sale on CL as "Gimpy" the 2 legged glider.
When I recieved him, he was horrifically stained, smelled overwhelmingly bad and had horrible balance. His fur was stuck to together and his tail had no fluff. He looked like he was covered with hair gel.
He would wobble back and forth when he tried to stand. He was terrified and mostly hid on the floor of the cage.
I immediately took him to the vet and thankfully he was given a clean bill of health, aside from his amputated legs and physical appreance.

Chance has been slowly coming out of his shell. He is still very skittish but doesn't run in fear when he sees me. He will now curiously approach my hand in his cage.
He is still badly stained. He does still smell but it is not overwhelmingly bad. (He is still currently intact also.) But I no longer have to hold my breath near him.
I am having difficulty with this because he is extra messy. He doesn't bother to leave his pouch to urinate and deficate. I am not sure if he is incontinent or it just takes to much effort to get up and out to go potty. He also doesn't seem to groom himself.
But his hair has begun to fluff up and he is starting to look better.
His balance is better although he still won't use a regular cage pouch.

I am still learning and luckily he is patient with me as I learn.

his coat does look better compared to the pictures of him before! Thankfully for him he found an amazing glider mommy to love him and spoil him. Hopefully he'll keep coming around and get to be a normal happy suggie!

Does he have any cage mates? Maybe when he is neutered he can have a friend that will show him the ropes and help groom him. I'm so glad he found you.

Your boy is really cute dispite all of his problems.

As to grooming, I am not sure which legs he is missing but in order to groom they usually do so with the back legs as this is where their grooming combs are. So, even if he only has one back leg.... the other one is missing.

So, to help him out with his inability of not being able to groom himself... perhaps bathing him in a small amount of warm water with a shampoo for cats would be what is needed. Remember, under normal circumstances.... sugar gliders spend lots of time cleaning themself... so a nice bath once a week will go a long ways to helping him stay clean. Also, a soft toothbrush can be used several times daily to comb his fur and once he get's used to it.... he will gladly let you groom him as he will find it very enjoyable.

Not sure what he is sleeping in if not a pouch. Perhaps a container down on the floor of the cage with some type of absorbant material that can be chaged out on a daily basis would help. Also, not sure... but an all wire cage may not be the best thing to house him in.

Need a little more information about him in order to figure out what would make his life a bit earsier for him. heart

Thank you for the advice.
Right now he is in the cage he came in. He was so stressed from the move that I didn't want to move him right away and risk stresing him more. I have a rept that I am going to turn on it's side for him. His climbing abilities are still limited and I worry of him falling.
I will get him a tooth brush and try helping to groom him. My vet said I could also use unscented baby wipes to try to wipe him off.
He doesn't have a cage mate yet. He will be nuetered this summer and then I will see how he is doing. I do have hopes of him one day having a companion.
He won't use a regualr pouch. Val has sent me a tent that she used for Jackie Chan and I am going to see if he likes that. Right now he has a hammock folded in half on the bottom of the cage so he can just walk into it.

I am open to any and all suggestions. We are learning together what works best for him. I moved him last night into my bedroom next to Stitch & Cupid. (Which is special to be in mommy's room) I am hoping he will watch them to learn more. I am thinking he never learned a lot of glider behaviors.

What else would you like to know about him?

I am ISO a safe wheel to give him. Any suggestions?

Judie...if I remember right he's missing a front and rear leg??? So, I think grooming might be a bit of a challenge for him.

Krys you an angel for taking this special boy in and giving him a great home.

He is so cute! He will learn in time. I am so glad you found him and got him out of that situation. I also think once he gets more settled in and relaxed and you get him neutered that a compaion would be great for him. I think that would do wonders for him. Because right now he is alone and scared and probably depressed. But thank god he has you. Please keep us posted on him. I can't wait to see what he will look like in a couple of months.

as far as a safe wheel, you may try looking at the custom cruisers, and see if Bourbon can help in any way making a wheel easy to use for him, or ask jackie chans mom if she uses a wheel or what she would suggest.

MaryH helped Val with Jackie Chan when she first adopted him... one of the things she suggested is to use something called Valux, in the cage, also if you reduce how how the cage is, and make the cage longer than higher, then he won't have to work so hard to do everyday stuff, as he gets more proficient, increase the difficulty levels.

thanks for the update on chance! he looks alot more relaxed with a little hope! he'll turn into a sweetie for sure! heart
i don't have any experience, but i was thinking the same thing before i read everyone else's posts. agree it's got to be extremely hard to groom himself with only one front and one rear leg. even balancing to try to do whatever he could has got to be hard. i like the idea of using a toothbrush, it'll help you two bond as well.
hopefully he'll be able to have a companion in the future, who will help groom him and teach him to keep his room clean!
keep up the good work! thumb

I was wondering more about him as well. Here is a question for the board. Is there any way to help him groom? I am asking as a precaution for ontehr people that might have this same issue happen. KrysKritters he looks wonderful from the description that you gave upon his arrival to your home. It takes a big heart to take on a glider with troubles and try to help them. MAJOR KUDOS!!

Yes, this little one lives with me and his name has been changed to Riddick.

Riddick required some time in a hospital cage with a specialized diet to build up his muscles. He CAN groom most of his body, he just didn't because he had been living in such filthy conditions for a long time. Krys did a wonderful job getting him started on the road to optimal health.

After a short bit with a good diet, Riddick began running in his wheel and bounding all over his cage and grooming himself. He was neutered during his quarantine period, which helped with his smell as well. Soon after quarantine, he began looking to the other gliders for some company and began to overgroom his head. We tried intros with a few gliders that did not work out. BUT---

I am happy to say that Riddick now lives happily with Venus and Cheddar!!!! Venus has taken on the job of grooming Riddick very well every day and snuggling with him. He is still quite stained, but MUCH improved from when he arrived at Krys' house. The three of them are incredibly sweet to each other, and both Cheddar and Venus will hold treats for Riddick from time to time so that he can use his one front arm to hold himself up. heart The three of them are SOOOOOOOOO messy when they eat! I have never seen gliders make a bigger mess. LOL

Riddick is as happy as can be and is such a wonderfully inspiring addition to my family. We are so grateful that Krys asked if she could send him here.

Here are a few pictures of Riddick with his buddies:

OMG,
He looks amazing compared to when he first arrived. What a handsome boy he is. He looks very happy and content with his new mama and family. I am so glad Venus and Cheddar like their new brother. This is such a great story that is an inspiration to us all.

Kudos to all who helped make "Chance" aka "Riddick" a happy suggie

Wow, I never heard a story like this before. I'm so glad Riddick has buddies now to help him out, and that is soo touching. I hope he continues to improve and his stain goes away, but even with it he is quite a handsome little man.
