Dehydration: Occurs as the body loses fluids and electrolytes, and causes a rise in blood sodium levels. Lack of water or poor water intake, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever can all lead to dehydration. When dehydrated, sugar gliders will exhibit a loss of skin elasticity, have a weak rapid pulse, their eyes may have sunken in somewhat, and they will appear depressed. As long as they are not vomiting, you may administer small amounts of water or unflavored Pedialyte® orally. The more severe the dehydration, or if vomiting is occurring, veterinary attention and fluid therapy is required. Prolonged dehydration leads to shock and death, so the cause must be sought out and treated.
Diarrhea: (loose watery stools) can have several causes including stress, parasites or bacterial infection. It can be slowed down by giving the glider a few oatmeal flakes (no more than 2-3 flakes or you risk blockages) or canned pumpkin. It is necessary to also keep the glider hydrated if diarrhea occurs.

If you feel your glider is sick, please seek immediate veterinary assistance. The information on this page and in the correlating articles is for general educational purposes and is not intended to replace proper vet care. Please do not try to self-diagnose or self-treat your glider.
