[:"green"]Congratulations!!! You have every right to be excited!!! You are about to embark on one of the most rewarding experiences of having gliders (in my opinion). 1. Yes, you can hold the joey starting on the first day oop. Only for a few minutes the first few days, gradually building up the amount of time you hold them as they get older. 2. They do not need a special diet unless they get rejected and you have to hand raise them... Please check out my page on Hand Raising A Joey so you can be fully prepared "just in case" something happens... 3. Momma will not mind you touching her baby, especially if you get her used to the idea while the joey's still in pouch. When the joey gets big enough to see a definite bulge, start gently rubbing Momma's pouch so that the joey is being rubbed through Momma's pouch. Momma will get used to the idea of your handling the joey this way. Another page you may want to read is about Breeding Sugar Gliders. I go into a lot of detail about what to expect while your glider's expecting, etc. Congrats again!

There is only one joey in there. It's definite. (yay!) It's big enough to tell! The weird thing that i didn't know is that I've been doing exactly what you just wrote. She loves when I gently tub her stomach. She just lays there as in a daydream. Thanks for you help and I definitly get myself ready! [:"green"]See, your instincts were already right on par! You're very welcome, I'm glad I could help out... if you have any more questions, feel free to ask away!
Another question... Does joeys, once oop, do they still go in the pouch for any other reason? Or do they just stick their head in to drink milk? I had another question but forgot it... Oh well. I'll ask when I remember.

Mommas will allow for the joeys to go completely back in pouch until they just don't fit any more. It is very common to one day see the joeys oop and then the next day the joeys shoved back in pouch. However this only lasts for a few days to a week depending on if she had one or 2 joeys. Joeys do grow pretty fast.

Another question... Sorry for bugging all of you. If the joey turns out to be a male, when or do I have to seperate him from daddy? And if it turns out to be female do I also have to seperate her? I have to wait till s/he is 8 weeks right? Thanks in advance.

With joeys, you pretty much can safely leave them with their parents until about 4 months oop. 8 weeks is the soonest you would want to remove them from their parents. I personally feel even that is to soon in most cases and 10-12 weeks is better.
If you are wanting to keep them together as a family unit/colony, I suggest if the joey is a male, to have him neutered at 4 months oop. If the joey is a girl, you will want to have dad neutered before she is 3 months out of pouch (just to be safe that he doesn't try to breed her). Family colonies are awesome to watch their interactions with each other.

And I am sending my congrats and my own announcement that at the Utah Glider Gettogether Xfilefan confirmed that I do have twins. Pebbles and BamBam are going to be parents. No my questions will start also...what is considered oop date? Today I found them glued to mom but there heads still in pouch. Naked as all can be. I kind of figured I had twins but when I showed Jen they were both tring to get into one side of mom. Scared me to death, I thought they were falling out and I was going to lose them. Silly Stevee.

Stephen, OOP is when you see them not only outside the pouch, but detached from the nipple. They will go in and out after that, tho. And should have a bit of hair first. I'll attach a pic of Peek at 1 day OOP (closest I got for a week, lol, he was our first)...and remember his dad was big, and mom was a little thing...and as a single joey he's good sized. The hair amount is about average, though.

Thanks. Now I want to get a camara so that I could take pics of mine.
If my joey turns out to be a male, I'm going to keep him. If it turns out to be a girl, I'm planning to give her to a dear friend of mine that, I know, will take great care of her. She's, since last year, has been dieing for a suggie and she's done all her research. Thanks for all your help.

Do the dads get real protactive? BamBam bit me today when I was trying to look in the pouch...He has never bit me. It was cute, Pebbles tried to climb out of the pouch and the babys were half in half out and she about did a summer salt right off the side of the bag trying to get the babys back into the pouch. BamBam comes running up and looks like he is trying to help put them back in pouch. It was so cute.

Just like some moms get protective, some dads do also! I have one that once the joeys are hanging out of pouch he lunges at my every move. Once the joeys are about 5 weeks oop he stops... just like that. Kind of funny if you ask me. He is a sweet glider also when there are no joeys around.

Thank fully she is still letting me pet her. This is so cool...my first grandkids and they are twins. As far as the BML I don;t need to worry about the Baby BML unless I have a rejected joey right? Otherwise the BML is good for all?

It is. You're doing everything right (but I know when you're expecting joeys it suddenly seems like you always wonder if you're doing enough)...can't wait to hear the OOP date! Of course, when Monster was expecting her first, her little mom hid them from her by stuffing them back in so long, their OOP date was almost when their eyes opened, lol! One of those was my Clotho!

Happy Moms Day to ME...LOL. I was looking in on them today just like I have done everyday since the gathering in Salt Lake watching...and today of all days they were off the nipple for little moments and crawling around the pouch on mom and then right back to sucking the nipple but not going back into the pouch. I lifted they little tails and by the look of thing they are both males and one has a dark black stripe and the other one is slightly smaller and kind of a grey stripe. I am so EXCITED.

[:"green"]Congrats on the joeys!!! When you lifted the tails, what was your identifying factor in determining they're both males? Did you see pom-poms on both of them just above the cloaca on their belly? Or did you see something that looked like a penis? That would have been cloacal extensions (don't know if they have an actual name) that are used for the parents to stimulate the joeys to go potty - they will gradually disappear over the next two weeks. Attached is a picture of a little boy (notice the little pom-pom just above the cloaca) to use for reference.
[:"green"]And here is a little girl (notice the small slit about where you'd expect a belly button to be). The only reason I questioned them both being boys is because so many of us have made the mistake of thinking they were boys based on the cloacal extension, only to find out they're actually girls later ... I know I made that mistake when Mareki came oop - she's definitely a girl though ! Congrats again!
AWW!! Congratulations on your two new little men! Good luck with them!

Ok now you are making me secound guess...I did not see any slits like on the girl but did not notice any thing like what is pictured for the boys...probably to young right now. To me it looked like a pimple with a white worm sticking out of it...on both of them so I assumed boys and that was their penis...I don't know now. I am going to have to go look again. OK...upon closer examination the results are....Boy and Girl...one of each. I found the slit on the light grey and the one with dark black stripe has the extra pom pom above the other pieace. LOL.

I've just read Joey Growth and Development and I just realized that my female must be at least 5 to 6 weeks old. I haven't seen any body parts yet so I am still waiting patiently. The 5 week picture looks just like Canella except with one lump. I can't wait now!
Mobility- Movements can be seen from outside the pouch Size- At the beginning of this stage joey will be Similar in size and shape to a peanut with its shell and will grow quite rapidly.
I've already seen the baby moving by watching closely to the pouch!
