we've got em (I'm assuming it's the same plant) and while I've never given em to gliders, I know marmots love them!

personally I would be wary of giving them... I know, at least in people, they can act as diuretics and laxatives and for that reason I would hesitate giving it to them.

according to those, they're not on the safe list... but are given a rate of 1 on toxicity, meaning they're not toxic at all

however - that doesn't take into account the fact that dark leafy greens usually have iron in them, and iron is usually hard on a gliders system, as they have no way to metabolize that metal... I don't know the level of iron in dandelions, but I'd guess its relatively high

Hey, where are you Mikey Bustos? This sounds like something you would definitely have the good info on.

Melanie, these work as a diuretic and laxative on people? Do you know why? I would have to be pretty desperate to try that but it sure does peak my interest.

I was wondering the same thing? I think Dancing feeds them from time to time.

I've always heard and read as well, that the flower of the dandelion is ok, but the leaves and stem are toxic. I can't remember where I read it, if I could I'd put the link. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

Well, if we're talking about the huge dandelion leaves that they sell at the supermarkets (and not ones that you pick from your front lawn), I do know that they're safe to feed to lizards. Whether that applies to gliders, too, is beyond me.

In fact, if I remember correctly, they're rather calcium-rich, as well.

Mikey, if you're SURE that there are no pesticides on them, what is the difference in the store bought from the hand picked ones? And what about the flower itself like Mimijo mentioned.

Well, the italians in my neighbourhood don't seem to worry about pesticides and fully enjoy putting the dandelions that grow in the wild around here into their salads, so I'm sure they too would probably be the same, however the ones from the groceries seem much more stout with longer leaves, and just overall better produce to me.

I have had no experience in feeding dandelions to my gliders so I can't help much, however there are so many other great options, e.g. hibiscus.

In rural England (can't remember which area) there was a thing called a groaning cake that was given to mothers in labor to help get "everything" out

Melanie, does that mean it's that great of a laxative? Is that what the cake was made of, dandelions?
