I have 2 approximately 18 week oop girls that began shaking uncontrollably yesterday eveing. I at first thought it was a seizure but they never stopped. I gave them some honey in case it was a low blood sugar problem but that did not help. I checked the cage for anything and everything. No diet change they are on the Pricilla's diet and eat well. The water bottle was fine, not leaking and in working order. It is now going on 18 hours of shaking. I went to the vet with them this morning and he was puzzled as well. He has seen a few sugar gliders but I live in a rural area so he hasn't seen many. He gave me some baytril and told me to feed honey water. They have been drinking it fine but their shaking so much I almost have to hold them tightly to hold them steady. Has anyone got any suggestions for me. I am to call the vet with an update but nothing has changed. He has not run any tests yet. Are there some I need to ask for?

Hi, I'm not really very knowledgeable yet on what to do with these little babies, but maybe if you can put them both in a pouch, your bra, and sit in a quiet place and just rub them and whisper to them. Mine acted similar a few weeks ago (they did last as long as yours is) but someone on here suggested that a change in weather can cause several types of changes (short term), or something could have frightened them, but until you get them back to the vet just hold them close constantly. I will send you prayers...be strong ok

It isn't like they are scare but they are to a point. They can't control their movements but it isn't HLP. I really don't know how to describe it. Ears are down, i think they are tiring out. When I reach in to get them to give them thier fluids they almost jump out of thier skin. I went to the store and got puply milk replacement, pedialyte and juice with yougurt. The vet thought they were getting too much calcium so he told me to not give them the vitamins for a couple of days. Will the puppy milk replacement hurt them?

[:"blue"] This is puzzling to me also, but I do know that at 18 weeks OOP they do not need any sort of milk replacement. I would just give them their normal diet plus the baytril the vet prescribed and leave them to settle down except to make sure they are getting fluids. Hopefully, someone else will be on that can be of more help, but the one thing in your favor is that you have taken them to a vet. Please keep us posted. [/]

As far as the regular diet goes they can't stop shaking long enough to eat anything. I can see it is going to be a long night. I worry so much as it is. If anyone has experience with a similar situation I would appreciate any suggestions.

Let us know how it's going, please.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOOOO HOOOO, WHAT A RIDE!!!

I am off to meet with the vet in a few minutes. Ginger and Mary Ann come from a very good breeder. I have already been on the phone with her and she is very supportive and is trying to suggest things for the vet to try. They are half sister's same dad different mom. They are in the pouch on me. Very warm here today. Some noises coming from pouch like sneezing or pssting. sorry can't really describe it. Sometimes it like a half way bark too. They are drinking good when I offer it too them. One drinks more than the other. I will post more after some tests are run. Thanks for everyone's help.

I really hope the vet visit gives you some insight as to what's going on and that all turns out for the best.

well i am back. Still no change. Doc said to give the baytril 24 hours to start working. Ran the normal set of tests, gave a sub q and sent me on my way. I guess that is all I could ask for in a rural area. If they are not better by tomorrow after church I will call a bigger city close to me and see if they can help. If I hold them kinda close and whisper it calms one of them down. I have put their dinner out for them but they don't seem interested. I will be up all night giving them their fluids so we will see in the morning. He wants me to check back with him tomorrow but I may just call the other vet. He is about an hours drive but what else can I do...I don't want to sound like it isn't worth the drive but i just would rather the local vet be more up to date so in an emergency i don't waste time on the road.

This is not shivering from cold or nervousness. HLP can present this way in some gliders (like my Riker) prior to loss of use of the back legs. These two need to get into the vet ASAP. An Xray may or may not help yet..an infection could be causing it-either bacteria or parasite. Muscles need calcium in order to function...which is why loss of muscle control can result in uncontrollable shaking. When it presents this way, you need to try and find the underlying cause. The vet needs to run urinalysis, fecal float and direct smear-Culture and Sensitivity if at all possible..Xray can be used to confirm (bones will not contrast well). I would recommend to have sub-q fluids with calcium and glucose (constant shivering can lower the blood sugar as well) injected at the vet, followed by oral calcium. I could be wrong-but every time I've seen this, this is what was going on-regardless, get them into a vet as soon as you can. At this point, they may not have time to wait-Riker was critical 24 hours after onset of the constant shaking, and we had weeks of touch and go and force feeding BML and fluids to bring him back (he couldn't eat because of the shaking-by the time it was done, he was too weak for days). Edit: Riker was my first glider-my post then (3.5 years ago) had the same title and description as yours.

I want to add...keep them on YOU and keep them warm-and you might have to do that for days. They will not be able to regulate their own temp right now, either. Please keep us updated.

we have been up for a little while now. The shaking is still there but not as bad. I am calling the doc that is on call again this afternoon and ask for the calcium sub q. He did give them fluids last night and I have been forcing them every 2 hours during the night. They did attempt to eat and were eating at 8 this morning. They are VERY strong. When I wrap them to give them fluids and meds they wriggle out and man they have a death grip on my fingers. My hands look like Edward Scissorshand got a hold of me!! Will too much calcium hurt them if this is not a calcium problem? I am trying to keep them on my but the pouch I have does not have a zipper only a pull typ closure. I will try to get a zipper one made today. So they keep wanting to climb out of the pouch. Thanks for all the help!! I will post more as things get better.

You are doing an unbelievable job with your babies, I commend you , try keep your hands washed with antibacterial soap to prevent them flaring up too much. Too much of anything including calcium can be bad, this is why Xfilefan (Jen) suggested having them X-rayed to find out if it is calcium deficiency. Even if you don't have them X-rayed today and get extra minerals etc. into them they will be OK so long as you follow up again with a vet soon.

It sounds like you are being a very good Glider mommy. Some people loose patience and give up. But you, you are there for them 100 % and I think that is a beautiful characteristic on your part. Keep up the amazing job and I hope your babies get well soon. I'm not very experienced with Gliders because I just got mine a couple of days ago. All I can say is I wish you the best and keep up the good work!!

How long have you owned these gliders? I am guressing they wwere recently accquired? Illness then would be stress related. I would continue the Baytril. vet can perscribe oral calcium for the babies for a week or two. Priscilla's diet is excellent. However, one must use her calcium and vitamins with it to obtain the 5:1 calcium to phosp. Are you feeding this diet with the correct calcium and vitamins designed for it?

They have settled down quite a bit and are sleeping very good now. I will know more about how they are in a a couple of hours. I got Mary Ann and Ginger the middle of April. the vet seems to think it is stress related. I am in touch with him twice a day. He has been researching and calling other vets. I found out while in the office, from other patrons, that there are way more sugar gliders in this county than thought. So he said he would do his best to do some research and get up to date on the care of these cuties. I am feeling better now that they are feeling better. I agree that it is probably stress related since I have not changed anything with the diet or care. My husband has been doing some woodworking and I feel the noise, from outside because the windows have been open, has them stressed. He makes sure that he does not track in the sawdust on his shoes or clothes but i am sure they can tell something is different. I have since closed the windows and closed the door to their room.

Sorry Judie I forgot to answer your questions, yes I am following the diet strictly. I called the breeder to go over it again and she doesn't see any difference from what she is feeding. And I am using the vitamin/calcium powder sprinkled on each serving at feeding time. They love it. I think they would actually eat just that by itself!! LOL. They are still sleeping but I expcet them up in an hour or so. they may be worn out from all the shaking and sleep in. But rest assured I will wake them for their fluids!! Thanks to everyone for coming to my rescue. I will keep everyone posted.

My Riker was recently acquired as well when he went through this (and his was ultimately calcium secondary to infection, exacerbated by stress)-the stress of a move can throw an already existing condition into overdrive, without being the main cause. I am hoping stress is all it is, but if there are any new symptoms at all, or worsening, lack of appetite, or the shaking does not stop, I would urge an emergency vet visit. Will watch for updates.

We had a good day on sunday. They slept good without shaking but shook quite a bit while awake. Got them to eat some chicken baby food loaded with calcium and vitamins through a syringe. This moring they took their fluids ok. Then at lunch I could not get them to wake up well enough to eat. The are kinda like that anyway. So I just pushed fluids. Then they started crabbing like mad and trying to fight with each other. That was unusual they have never barked and crabbed like that before. Then I came home from work and found them exprired on the bottom of the cage. There were appearances they had been fighting but no blood. Now I am not sure about anything now. Too many emotions to explain. But I do want to thank everyone who posted advice and support to me. I only had them a month but they were like my best friends and I am missing them so much. I keep expecting them to poke their head out of the pouch for a mealie when I go into their room. This board is truly a family and I appreciate each and every one of you. Some day in the future I hope to be a glider mommy again. I know I can come here for any help that I will need and support.
