Oh, has anyone seen the america's next top model show thingy? They once had the models pose with giant hissing roaches that had jewels stuck to them. Yikes

Yesh, I'm a n00bie to the glider peoples and Kiwi hasn't even had her first mealy yet *tear* On Mon. I think my mom's gunna work up the courage to take me there (last time Kiwi glidded onto her she ran around screaming X3)
If I had a roach and maybe some tweezers and a knife I THINK I could do it.....it's just getting the crawler past factor X.....my mom.

Sugar Sweet--my roaches have Eukanuba Naturals dry dog food available all the time, plus I toss in fresh fruits & veggies periodically. Water is in a shallow dish with a paper towel; bedding is crumpled-up paper towels.

Austi, for these roaches, tweezers won't do. You'd need PLIERS. They're three inches long and quite strong.
Also, I've discovered that game shears work better than a knife.

Mikey--two watermelon-seed-size nymphs (first instar?) came gratis in the container with the females; I just saw one, still alive after over two weeks. Does this mean my house is warm enough for the adults to breed?

Sure! They'll breed under nearly any conditions. Room temperature or even better slightly warmer than room temperature works best! Give them lots of food! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

At $3 apiece if I buy them at the pet store, I sure hope they make lots of baby roaches. Should I play romantic music for them? LOL

Oh, Saharah, I promise you, they procreate exponentially! I started my first Madagascar Hissing Roach colony with only 15 roaches, and in a about 6 months I had hundreds with plenty to spare to feed all my insectivore pets at the time.

Sugas glidas - Just in case it wasn't clear, don't go out and give your gliders just any roach you find crawling around. Chances are very good that wild roaches have been in contact with lots of insecticide, but often they can roll around and take a bath in it and it won't kill them! Also, just think of the germs your average household roach has consumed or walked through! (insert Sissy's green vomiting guy here) If you want to feed roaches, get some that have been raised for insectovores.

I'm sorry, but I just have to say this - I am SO AFRAID of insects (except maybe pototo bugs and lady bugs) that it's not even funny! (Well, it's not funny to me, but other people think it is sometimes - for example, if you even say the word "snail" around me I let out a shriek and start freak*ng out!)

The only bugs I can even bring myself to get near enough to give to Flip are freeze dried mealies, which I know aren't the best for her, but even THEY give me the heebies to the point that it took me six months to even be able to do THAT much! There is NO WAY ON EARTH that I'm letting a cockroach into my house for Flip to eat, even if Mikey brought it himself and fed it to Flip without me! EW EW EW EW EW EW EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! (I'm chewing on my nails now! HEEBIES TO THE MAX!) (I guess I should also mention the fact that I had a ex-boyfriend who tells a story of eating a sandwich with bread filled with baby cockroaches by accident! Somehow I can't get the image out of my mind right now!!!)

I'm glad if you've got the guts to do so, but not all of us have what it takes to feed things like cockroaches to our suggies, no matter how much we love them! *Runs off screaming to go take a shower now!!! Gotta get the images outa my mind!!!*

They're not like the pest cockroaches we ahve here.
They're very slow moving and are flightless. They actually act more like giant potato bugs than roaches! They're non-pestiferous even if a few do get loose in your Utah home.

One of my good floormates in college was helping to do a study on those exact roaches. We were going out one night when she said she needed to stop to do a time test (bio majors, I don't understand the lingo most of the time...) on them or something. Since I'd never really had a problem with bug before I (stupidly) agreed to come with her before going out. I took one look of a huge aqaurium of the things hissing and climbing and FREAKED. I was not able to talk to her for a solid five minutes because I was in such a state of shock.

Serious kodos to you for being able to not only look at them for more than two seconds, but for being able to handle them enough to feed them.

Love is a real motivator. Lord Darcy is part of my soul, and with all the goodies and special treats he gets (I practice blatant favoritism) he is at 181 grams -- this is about ten or twenty grams over his ideal weight, but I have no way of knowing how long he'll remain in remission, and keeping weight on him has been a constant struggle for the past 4 years. Last fall he got down to 101, and that was with unlimited Ensure and all sorts of tempting treats.
