[:"green"]This past Saturday, I got a phone call from Katie, the 16 year old girl that adopted my Little Cricky just over two years ago. She was crying because she had just found Little Cricky on the floor of the cage - he had passed over to the Rainbow Bridge. His twin brother, Scruffy, was also acting sick and she didn't know what to do. I went over to her house & found Scruffy very sick and severely dehydrated. I got him to drink some Pedialyte and, along with Katie's mom, we headed to the emergency vet hospital about an hour away. During the drive, I continued to give Scruffy more Pedialyte and got him to drink a total of 3.5 cc's by the time we got there. They were unable to determine why Scruffy was so sick, but they gave him sub-q fluids and between the vet & I, we were able to convince Katie's mom to have a necropsy done on Little Cricky. We got the results of the gross necropsy on Sunday. Little Cricky had a tummy full of food (which means that he hadn't been feeling sick during the night) and was in overall great health with no discernible reason for death. Tissue samples have been sent out for further testing, but we won't have the results for at least another week (I'll post them once available). Scruffy seems to be doing much better now, but we still don't know why he was so sick & dehydrated .
This is really hitting me hard because I hand-raised Little Cricky & Scruffy from the time they were 3 weeks oop (due to their mother having a yeast infection in her pouch) until they were weaned & ready to go to Katie. Parting with them after hand-raising them was very difficult for me, but at least they were only a few miles away & I knew they were going to an excellent home where they would be loved & well cared for. I got to see them regularly, and that always helped, too. Every time they would visit with me, they would chitter at me & dive down into my shirt, turn around and look up at me with their big doey eyes . I sure love those little guys and now I will forever miss Little Cricky .
We have gone over every aspect of the 2 days previous to Little Cricky's death & can't come up with anything that would explain his death & Scruffy's illness. Hopefully the necropsy will give us some desperately needed answers. Not only so we can rest our minds about Little Cricky, but also so we know why Scruffy was so sick & what to do to help him regain his health. Sorry it took me so long to post this, but I was still really grieving and just couldn't formulate the words to talk about it yet...
