I am posting this video because before I experienced this for myself I had no idea really what food aggression was like, how it affected gliders and what to look for. For awhile I could not figure out which cage was fighting, by the time this video was taken the aggression had gotten so bad between this pair that the aggressor (Edan) did not care that I was in the room right there watching (which is how I finally figured out who was fighting).

In this case of food aggression the stress has gotten to both gliders causing overall poor coat quality and also some over grooming of his tail. Freya due to the constant attacks and not getting enough food was pulling 'fresh' (just dropped in pouch) joeys.

The video quality is poor, sorry about that.

I've gone thru this as well - are you still having problems or did you find a remedy?

For anyone needing the information, here are things you can do to alleviate hoarding;
Quote:
I would suggest doing all of them, just picking one or two may not solve the problem as quickly, or at all;
-Most importantly - make sure their fresh food is in their cage before they wake up. The reason this helps: When a hoarder wakes up, they are already worried about there being enough food for everyone, and he/she is likely a little hungrier from the previous night's guarding the food and not getting enough to eat. If they wake up to no food in the cage, it reinforces their fear and they are automatically put on the offensive for when the food arrives. By having food in their cage before they wake up every night, they begin the calm down realizing that food will always be available, no matter when they are hungry. If you are not able to get their food in their cage before they wake up, be sure to leave fresh water and some kind of pellet food or something for them to munch on until dinner arrives.

-Start giving them extra food - a lot of extra food for a little while. The reason this helps: They learn that there is such an abundance every night and they will never go hungry. (As I said, WE already knew this was true). Once they have settled down and stopped hoarding, you can feed slightly less again. If you have a hoarder, always make sure that there is some food left over.

-Use multiple feeding stations (at different heights if possible) and put each feeding station in a glider kitchen (make sure the entrances are not facing each other). The reason this helps: If there are multiple stations covered by kitchens, hoarder cannot see all of the food dishes or when another glider is visiting them, so they cannot possibly guard them all. Something that helps particularly aggressive hoarders is to set a feeding bowl on top of one or more of the kitchens near the side of the cage, so that the cage mates can come down and swipe a piece of food and run away again before the hoarder realizes they are eating.

-Realize that this problem is not going to resolve itself overnight. The longer the chasing or aggressive behavior has gone on, the longer it will take to for them to settle down. It can take several days to several weeks.

Things you can do to prevent this behavior from reoccurring, once you have it stopped:
-Keep track of appetite levels, if you notice that there is less food left in their bowls for 2 nights in a row, start giving them a little more.
-Continue to put their fresh food in their cage before they wake up, or keep snacking food in their cage at all times, so they have something to munch on until their fresh food can be put in.

This has been a issue since October.

Edan's behavior has not improved and due to the severity of the issue w/ the risk towards Freya they have been separated. I suggest anyone going through this assess the situation for their own and do not think separation as the first resort! This can be dealt with in a way the gliders could remain together happily. Though food aggression in my opinion can not be cured you can set your gliders up to succeed and not fail by following the tips Gretchen gave. Gretchen's post above is the best advice! Do ALL OF IT! And be aware and patient!

We had issues with this. 3 of our cages were fighting like this over food. We found that adding a dry supplement (Happy Glider)made the problem go away immediately. The same night we added the food, the fighting stopped. Everyone is eating together peacefully now.

We had so much luck with this, we now vend it and recommend it to people having problems with food aggression.

I dealt with a pair of my gliders briefly having this issue just out of the blue one day. I ended up making separate feeding stations in totally different areas of the cage (one up high and one on the floor). This worked for me, thank goodness. I'm glad that their food issues only lasted about 2 weeks. They are now very happy sharing the same dishes and eating together again!

Thanks for posting that video and the information. I know there are others out there that are dealing with the same situation and could really use that advice. This is something that can just happen one day, even if your gliders have been together for years. Everyone needs to know what to do in case this happens to them.

Weighing your gliders on a weekly basis, will alert you to the earliest weight loss. While it could be from illness, it can also be from living with a food aggressive glider.

You can also take out the non-aggressive glider/s at dinner time and feed them separately, before returning them to the cage. That gives them a chance to eat without the stress of being chased and gives the aggressive glider a chance to fill their tummy, while showing them they don't have to be protective of the food.

Food aggression is one of the worst things ever! I went through this over the summer with one of my pregnant females. Luckily, adding two separate dishes helped.

I wanted to point out what I believe may be the early signs of aggression. For the last two days, Kizzy has taken to putting her body into her feeding dish and not letting anyone near. Now, there are two other dishes in the cage, and she so far, doesn't seem to have a problem with letting the other two gliders eat. Just as long as it isn't from her apparently favorite dish.

I'll be adding more food, more dishes and putting them in different places in the cage, just to be on the safe side. I'll also be watching closely, to make sure Kizzy is protective of just the one dish.

This surprised me this morning, because all three gliders are a very healthy weight.

It is also worth pointing out that the video above does not depict food aggression at its very worst. Some gliders are actually more aggressive than those above - especially if you happen to get two food aggressive gliders in the same cage/colony.

I have dealt with many, many food aggressive gliders. The advice given above is very good advice. There are other things you can do as well. When I have more time, I'll try to remember to get back here and post other things that have worked in my home.

So sorry to hear that Suggiemom and its so wonderful at least you noticed it in time!

Val your very right! I am lucky and no gliders were wounded over this time. This is one of those things that is just absolutely frustrating and heartbreaking.

I hope to never go through this again, and am taking precautions in all my cages 'just in case' Each cage has 2 dishes in it now, and the aggressive gliders get 3-4 dishes. It sounds like a lot of work, but it really only takes an additional few seconds and not having to hear the screaming, crabbing and violence wake me in the middle of the night - not having that freak out feeling - totally worth it.

Good luck to all who have this issue!!
