I wanted to get everyone's opinions on this. Are the seeds that are in fruits and vegetables bad for sugar gliders? I was told a while back they were. Ever since I've been hand picking them out of everything. I didn't know if any of them are ok. So I pick them out of watermelon (white and black seeds), cucumber, squash, cantelope etc. If it has a seed I pick it out. Just to be safe.

What does everyone else do? Do you just give your gliders the fruits and veggies seeds and all or do you pick out all the seeds?
Are all of the seeds bad or are any of them safe for gliders?

Thanks for your opinions!

If it's a large seed, I will generally scoop or pick it out. Smaller seeds...I leave them. The gliders will eat what's around them and spit them out so I don't worry about them. For instance - cucumbers. I never take the seeds out.

I used to do that to until somebody told me if they accidentally eat one it can cause a blockage in their stomach. So ever since I've been paranoid about any seeds. Of course, im paranoid about everything when it comes to my monkeys! Lol.

Last night I was making their food and I had watermelon. I was hand picking out all of the little white seeds and I started thinking about it. I was actually wishing they were safe so I could stop picking every little seed out! Lol.

I also thought it was all seeds....except like in kiwi. I pick then all out too. If you use the little pointy tweezers it makes gettint the white ones out a bit easier. Ive had that same thought about the little seeds but as sure as mine ate one...they would be the one to get sick from it then Id feel horrible.

Apple seeds are toxic. They contain cyanide

When Cherry Seeds are crushed, chewed, or even slightly injured, they produce prussic acid (hydrogen cyanide). toxic!

There are two types of almonds (which are seeds, not nuts). There are "sweet almonds" and "bitter almonds". Bitter almonds are toxic UNLESS COOKED. It is illegal to sell RAW almonds in the US. All almonds sold in the US have to be heat treated to remove the toxins and any bacteria.

Apricot, Peach and Nectarine pits contain the toxins cyanogenic glycoside and amygdalan.

Pear seeds have a potentially lethal cyanide compound

Plums have pits containing a cyanide compound

Avocado seeds have unidentified toxin attacks the myocardium (protective sac around the heart) and--in nursing animals--the mammary tissue

Papaya seeds are safe and are a lot like hot pepper.
Honeydew, cantelope, watermellon and most squash seeds (pumpkin etc) are also safe.

Grape seeds are safe and high in anti-oxidants.

The issue is, most gliders WON'T eat them and just have fun throwing them at each other, the walls or whatever! (tomato seeds are REALLY hard to get off walls once they dry on them!)

On a side note...why garlic and onions shouldn't be fed....

Onions and garlic (genus Allium) contain thiosulphate, which in high doses is toxic to dogs, cats and some other livestock.

I pick out hard seeds. I leave the seeds from stuff like yellow squash, zucchini, cucumber, but take out other seeds from stuff like butternut squash, apples and watermelon. I know I'm over-protective of my babies. In the wild, I'm sure they're smart enough to not eat something unsafe for them. I just don't take any risks with my little ones.

I usually take out pits/stones (cherry, peach, nectarine, etc.) I usually also cut out the hearts of the apples and pears because I often give them part of an apple I am eating. Pretty much every other seed gets left behind, depending on how I am fixing their food. They all really love squash seeds, more if they are cooked or dried than just raw, though.

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.

Only some seeds really need taken out. I was taking them out of papaya but one day I'm scraping them out over the trash with a dull knife while Ryuu was out. He jumped down my arm, grabbed the knife, stuffed a bunch of seeds in his mouth, and ran off to crunch them before I could get to him. What was left was the little squished bit like when they eat pellets or anything with a firm texture to leave behind. After that I quit pulling the papaya seeds out and just remove pits from any fruit that has one and seeds from certain fruit like apples. Even though the compound in apples that gets turned in to cyanide by the body is extremely low and should not result in poisoning unless they are specifically eating the seeds from several apples.
