So far, mine aren't going well. The very first time they met, they started grooming each other and it appeared like they were going to get along famously. Then every time I let them out in the glider room together, they balled up or the older girls chased the younger boys away (the boys are neutered). I've been swapping toys and pouches and the boys will sleep in the girls' pouch but the girls won't sleep in the boys' pouch. Yesterday I swapped cages so the girls have their own pouch but it's in the boys' cage. They've been in separate cages in the same room for well over a month--maybe closer to two months. The boys aren't yet bonded to me very strongly, so when I let them out of their cage, they are hard to put back in. So I've been letting the girls out and the first thing they do is run over to the boys' cage and instigate. They'll crawl all over it and when the boys come over to sniff and investigate (through the bars of the cage), the girls will crab and hiss and chase the boys away. I'm actually surprised by this behavior because the girls are generally pretty easy going. It seems like the boys are willing to try to get along with the girls but they aren't playing nice. Any ideas/advice you can give would be wonderful. I really want a happy little colony of 4...

It actually doesn't sound terrible to me! Making noises...hissing...swatting...even chasing...they're all normal and it's their way of coming up with rankings. I asked this of someone the other day. What do you consider "balling up"? Some people will see their gliders come together and wrestle and think they're balling up. This isn't always the case. If you take a piece of fleece and wave it by them or say "Hey!" - do they separate and go their own directions? If so...they aren't balling up...this is different and within reason, should be allowed for a few seconds so they can determine who gets to be the alpha. Sometimes, intro'ing one at a time works the best, which is what we did here.

Bug got to go first with Penny....because Bug was the youngest and I thought, would be the simplest because she's the most easy going, as well. She let Penny know who was boss right off the bat! She swatted, she hissed, she tssst'd, she chased....Penny just hung her head and took it. It was so pathetic and so sad...but I let them do their thing. Once Bug accepted Penny, then I intro'd Teeka. She took a bit longer...doing a lot of chasing and making a lot of noise. They wrestled a bit and had to determine rank. Bandit was a little tougher still...took him about 3 or 4 days to accept Penny...but once he realized that the other girls liked her, then he relented and they've been together since. smile

Well then I'm not sure if they balled up in a serious way. They did on the window ledge and they both fell off (it wasn't very high off the ground and there was carpet and padding and a blanket under them) and ran in separate directions within about a second. Then later on, there was another instance where they "balled up" for about a second on a cardboard box and I think one of them slipped and they both ran off in separate directions. Do you think those were okay then? How can you tell when it's not okay? Like if I try it again tonight and they fight, how long do I let it go before intervening? I just don't want anyone to get hurt... Both pairs seem genuinely curious about the other, so I think it will eventually work, I'm just not sure how slowly to take it. And I'm concerned that if I take it too slowly, I'm hindering their bond...

I have done the pouch swapping and swapping cages for up to a month.

Have you tried doing introductions in the morning about an hour or so after they have gone to bed for the day.

Intro them in a bathtub with a piece of clean fleece on the bottom of the tub. Let them sniff each other and then offer them a clean bonding pouch to crawl into. If they all go into the same pouch then carry them around together for the day.

Thanks, Kimberley. That's a good idea. I will try that tomorrow morning. :-)

Update:

I tried Kimberley's trick this morning. I put some fleece in the bottom of the bathtub and put both of them in their respective pouches in the bathtub. Chloe and Jasmine ran right over to the boys' pouch, crawled in and they're all happlily snuggling and grooming one another. Who knew it would go so smoothly? AWESOME!! I'm well on my way to having a happy quad! I'll keep them with me today to keep an eye on them and will try having them in the same cage tonight. I'll probably sleep down in the glider room so I'm close by in case anything happens. How exciting! So far, it's looking like a wonderful Christmas gift! What behavior can I expect for the next few days?

What a wonderful gift, I love successful intro's! clap Expect them to be as excited as you are, they will explore one another.

How did they do last night? I just got home from my route to check this. Did they play nice?

Hi kimberley, I left them in separate cages last night because I didn't have time to supervise. They have spent today sleeping together in my shirt. Will put them together tonight and will spend the night supervising.

sounds good, I think they will play nice. You might see them arguing, but they need to decide amongst themselves who will be top glider. So don't stress over the little tiffs.

So far they're doing great. I put both their stealth wheels and 2 food dishes in there as well as a couple pouches in case they don't all want to snuggle together. But everything is peaceful so far.

Thank you all for your help and advice. I got a happy little quad for Christmas! BEST. GIFT. EVER. They played nicely together last night, ate all of their food, and all 4 of them are snuggled together amongst the eucalyptus leaves inside their octopus toy. I can't be happier for them!

So Kimberley, after the holidays, I'll clean up that cage you loaned me for the boys and get that back to you. Thank you SO much for letting me borrow it.

And Sarah, I'll only need to borrow one travel cage from you. :-) Yay!
