I know that gliders prefer to be with their humans, so already toys are put on a secondary tier...but is it normal for gliders to ignore ALL toys, even ones that they used to play with?

I've been noticing that you've been posting a bunch off stuff recently about your depressed glider, and even though I don't really have anything helpful to add at this point I am going to make a speculation. Maybe she misses her previous owners, and since you just got her, she still needs time to get used to you. Or maybe she just needs a sugar glider playmate, perhaps you should look into getting her a buddy, but I'm sure others will give you more advice, good luck with her! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I'd talk about my happy glider, if I had one. The toys she has are still mostly from her old owners. All I added were two housing pouches and a fleece climbing rope. I kept her old toys in to help her feel more at home. Her former owners said she didn't play much with toys either. As for the playmate, it's been something Dan and I have discussed. The problem with Ling-Ling is that she's got a lot of unknowns around her. We don't know her age for sure, we don't know exactly where she came from, we don't know how many times she's changed hands, and we don't know if she's ever been to a vet. I have read in several places that suggies can die of depression. If she doesn't make it, I don't want to put another glider through seperation anxiety because her cage mate died. We'll see what the doc says in a few days. She was imporiving the first day or three we had her, but since then she's started to back slide. Thanks!

Hi Lingling... I feel so much for your glider... you shouldn't think like that... I mean you should get her a playmate and not think that if she dies then you will have another depressed glider... Not all gliders feel lonely... Some like to have a friend, some don't. But if you don't get her a playmate sure she will continue to be depressed... And the chances of her dying will be very high compare to the chances of her dying with a playmate... My female was depressed as well... She even refused to eat until i got her a playmate... I think you should try. At least if she really dies you know you did whatever you could, and that it wasn't on your hands. And if she dies you can always get a playmate to the one that was left. Our gliders happiness lay on our hands. It all depends on how can we make them happier. toys are not everything. I also didn't know much about my gliders when I first bought them. But they are happy now. If she didn't go to a vet... well take her to a vet then, if you think it is necessary... The past doesn't matter much. What matters is how YOU treat her... Good Luck!

I know my glider was losing interest in all her play things about 2 months after I got her. I felt like I wasn't making her happy enough. I set out to get her a playmate because most gliders prefer pairs. I just got her a friend a few days ago and I already see a big change. She runs around with the little guy all the time, and she also seems to like me more now too. I really think you should get her a playmate. It can work wonders.

First thing I would do is get her in for a wellness checkup and make sure she is healthy and has no underlying illness creating the appearance of depression. I did see in your post above where you mentioned you will see what the doc says in a few days so I am assuming you already have a vet appt. in place which is good. Now with that being said, there are known gliders out there that really have no interest in toys. If you talk to Karin (gliderdaydreams and also a Mod here on GC) she will tell you she has the most picky furballs in the world and she doesnt believe they like anything at all that she puts in their cage! They dont play with toys neither! She actually may be playing but when you go to sleep at night. What is the lighting like when you are watching to see if she plays? Is it possible it is just too bright for her and therefore keeps her from playing? If all goes well at the vets office, I would recommend to consider getting her a playmate of her own species and maybe that will indeed help her out. Does she have a wheel? It is probably the no. 1 choice of toys for Sugar Gliders.

My gliders for the most part don't play with toys either. They either leave their monkeys hanging or just knock them down & let them lay there and ignore most hanging mobil things. About the only toy they play with consistantly on their own is their wheel. (Judy try talking to our vendors who sell wheels. They may be willing to ship overseas) With me they will chase strings or play with feathers but on their own they like to climb, run on their wheel & eat.
