Is the bald spot on the top of a male gliders head indicative of being sexually mature?I have heard and read many times that a male is not sexually mature until he has his bald spot. Although this "sign" is indicative of maturing, it is not a fool-proof method of knowing if your little guy is ready to reproduce or not.
I have had several male joeys that have what appears to be a bald spot as early as 7 weeks old. These guys were not sexually mature.
I have also had a male breed a female before he ever had any sign of a bald spot. (Thankfully, these two were paired together for that reason, so no "oops" there! )

My youngest male to get his bald spot was 5 1/2 weeks. Even neutered males can have a bald spot. My Roo has been neutered and then had to have his pom removed, but he still has a definite bald spot. Kanani, my mo ring tail has fathered 2 babies but his bald spot isn't much different from Roo's.

Males do not become sexually mature until their PomPoms drop... Depending on the their breeding as it can vary alot can be from 10+ months - almost 2 years old.. I have a male he is about 15 months & his Pompoms just dropped..
The bald spot is a scent gland, and does not mean that they are sexually mature..

I'm interested to read the answers to this! I've also heard you can tell if a mo male is sterile or not by presence or absence of the bald spot. I haven't heard this one, but have heard that if their pompoms do not drop it is very likely that they are sterile..

The bald spot is a scent gland, and does not mean that they are sexually mature.. I have never heard it take 10 months to 2+ years for their testicles to drop into their scrotum. This usually occurs very early on from as early as 3 months OOP. According to Suz, 12 weeks OOP is the earliest known case of a male joey being able to reproduce. If you mean when they let the pom drop and literally "hang", that is for temperature control. They lower the pom and it looks like it's hanging from a string.

On 2 out of 3 of the Sugar gliders I have had neutered there bald spot filled back in with in a matter of just weeks. I think personally that it is an indicator of sexual maturity. However I don't have not raised a large number of sugar gliders. I think this question might be better answered by some one who is an avid breeder.

Lucian was one of my first joeys. Right at 4 months, his marblies were there, his spot was coming in and as a precaution for no Oopsies, I had him neutered. I have 4 boys with no pom, and two with pom. I DP notice that the pom on boys still have a small oil gland on their head, while the pom off boys may as well just be girls, as there is literally nothing on their heads. Granted, there is still some mounting and some marking. Another thing i notice is the pom off boys don't mark nearly as much as my pom on's. Their fur is also much cleaner and looks great, while the other two boys look like boys, with gross fur, from marking. I feel that as a precaution, if you have joeys, get them done within a month of the marblies being in the bag.

I've only had pom off neuters, all of the boys bald spots disappeared. I have noticed that the age at which they are neutered do play a role.
I've had one and two year old boys neutered who's bald spots took much longer to go away than the male who was neutered at 6 months of age. Then I had a boy neutered right after his testicles dropped, he did not have a bald spot at the time, and never got one.

Charlie is 'around' 2 years old. He had a pom off neuter within his first year. There's no bald spot or oil gland on his chest, I've never seen him floss and I've never seen him mount either of his ladies.

This is an interesting conversation as I've also wondered about this.

First you have to understand what the bald spot is and what causes it. (MOST do know, not assuming anyone is dumb or anything)
The bald spot is caused by scent oils that are secreted. These oils are triggered by testosterone. Testosterone is produced by the testicles, the scrotum AND adrenal gland.
Testosterone IS produced in both males and females and is necessary to both. Males produce much more and the majority of that testosterone is used by the reproductive process.
Removing the testicles will remove most but not all of the testosterone. Removing the scrotum will remove more. The adrenal gland however is still there and still produces small amounts.
Some self mutilating is triggered by hormones and is why in those cases, we recommend a pom OFF neuter, so that the hormones can be reduced as much as possible.
Sterile males will still usually have a scrotum and they certainly have adrenal glands so even if they fail to develop testis, they will still be producing testosterone so can still develop the bald spots.
With ferrets, it is believed that because they are neutered/spayed so young (most ferrets sold come from the Marshall mill that neuters/spays way to young) that once they become adults and reach sexual ages, the adrenal glands try to make up for the other removed testosterone producing glands and goes into over drive. This is believed to be the reason ferrets are so prone to adrenal disease.
Based on how ferrets adrenals react to young neutering, it is why I won't have my joeys neutered before 4 months old. And even that young concerns me.
While the bald spot can be in INDICATION that a glider is reaching sexual maturity, it is not the definitive indicator nor is it the only one.
Added....this is why some females will also get a hint of a bald spot. For whatever reason, she is just producing more testosterone or it is just being misdirected within her body.

I always do pom on and never neuter before 5 months. The vet I use recommends 6 months due to the Anesthesia. Why would you need to take more than the testicles? Just leave the empty sack, use a little glue, no stitches and they are back with the gang w/in 24 hrs. As long as there are no complications. I guess it's just a preference.

I had a glider that had a "thinning spot" but it never really was bald.........he was sterile so I wondered, too. I've never had a male glider that had a really large bald spot, but I have definitely seen them and I often wondered if it was any indication as far as how fertile they were! LOL
