We've talked about gliders fighting an ecollar and how natural it is. Today, I was able to get some really good video of Chidi after his neuter and his reaction to the ecollar. I want to point out, because he is a rescue, NOT bonded to me, terrified and extremely difficult to 'capture', should he go for his incision site, I put the ecollar on. Here are the videos of him fighting the ecollar just minutes after he woke up from anesthesia. He fought the ecollar off and on for twenty minutes. By the time I started back home, he had adjusted and stopped fighting it. He's now in the hospital cage on my bed, pouting, with his back to me. He hasn't fought the ecollar since we left the vet's office. He and his sister, Chichi, both had SNAP fecals done again and were still clear. Neither cooperated in giving urine samples but hopefully they will tomorrow. Both were also given B-Vitamin shots.

Checking patagium Checking teeth. Left lower incisor is a bit shorter than the right one but is naturally this way for him. It has not been broken off. Checking rest of body Sub-q fluids Oxygen Starting to wake up

Wow, thank you for sharing the photos Connie! They are VERY educational! Chidi looks great considering the condition he was given over in. I'm so glad you gave these babies hope for a better life.

Checking rest of body Sub-q fluids Oxygen Starting to wake up Wanted to add, my vet always does a thorough exam right after the neuter BUT, the gliders are not still being anesthetized. They are given oxygen, as soon as the neuter is completed. Everything you see in this part of the thread, was done while waiting for him to wake up. It took him about three minutes to come out of the anesthesia.

One thing you may want to add for those who have not had a glider anestetized.....when they come out of the anestetic they are confused, disorientated and often have a tendency to bite ANYTHING including themselves until they are more alert. I've had babies who have tried to bite their own toes and latched onto me when I interrupted them.

That's exactly right, Chris. They wake up with that little mouth opened and ready to bite whatever they come into contact with first. The first thing Chidi did, like most of the other males I've had neutered, was to head straight towards his incision site. Because of their disorientation, their instinct kicks in and they bite to protect themselves.
It is heartbreaking to put them into an ecollar. They're terrified, thrash around and once they've accepted it, they sit with their back to you and pout. But, because of the disorientation and their tendency to self-mutilate, a little time in an ecollar beats a glider tearing themselves open and dying or needed extensive surgery. Mine have always adapted pretty fast. Some take a while, some never adapt. You just have to keep telling yourself through the heart wrenching sight, it's for their own good.

Ok, first great pictures Connie now I will have to get off my butt and post the pics of the pom off CO2 laser neuter that I have and told Eddie I would post.
Second, were your ears burning while you videoed him fighting that e collar, I am sure that that I heard every single sugar glider swear word come out of his little mouth.
Great post Connie! I will try and get the laser neuter posted this weekend.

I have to admit I cried when I saw that video, but I know it was for his own good. Even Arwen asleep on my chest woke up and "buzzed" till I pet her and spoke softly to her, then she went right back to sleep. When Frodo was neutered I was so worried that he would go after his incision that I took a week off work and kept him in a hospital cage right next to me, I didnt sleep unless he slept. God was I tired! Thanks for the pics! My hubby wont look at them

It's not the first time a glider has cussed me, but it's the first time I've heard so many glider swear words all at once! LOL!
I'm really interested in seeing the laser neuter!
I had to laugh about hubby refusing to look! LOL!!!

The sound on this video really upset my babies. They were in my shirt and they started squirming all around! I muted the computer to finish watching. It was hard to watch, though. Poor little bug. How long do you usually have to keep the e-collar on for, Connie?

How long do you usually have to keep the e-collar on for, Connie? I leave the ecollar on for 24-48 hours with rescues. They're usually terrified and if they were to try to go for their incision site, I don't want to have to try to chase them around to stop them, even in the small hospital cage. With bonded gliders, I wait and see if they need it. An ecollar is very stressful to a glider and shouldn't be used if not necessary. In doubt tho, use it. Better safe than sorry. If I use an ecollar, I'll leave it on overnight at the most. I normally have neuters scheduled for early morning but yesterday afternoon was the soonest I could get Chidi in. I take the ecollar off and watch for a couple of hours. If they don't go after their site, I bring their cage mate into the hosp cage and watch until dinner time. I've never had to keep a bonded glider in an ecollar more than one night. Miss Connie did you get the plastic I sent??? If its the right kind for your e-collers let me know and i'll start saving my plastic for you! Yes, I did and it's perfect! I loved the adorable drawing you made on the outside!

Because of their disorientation, their instinct kicks in and they bite to protect themselves. When I had my first neuter done at the vet college I came back to find Chewie with an eCollar around his waist like a skirt and to my horror they told me they had given him a donut when he woke up and he shredded it. Yes, an actually donut, someone didn't get a donut with their coffee. They try to give them something to tear up so they don't start biting themselves. So they stuck a donut in his face.
