Hello All!!! I'm completely new! I have been researching Suggies for MONTHS (over 6 to be exact) and fell upon this forum. I live in Pennsylvania I know that there are laws against breeding suggies in PA. But does anyone know if it is legal to have them as pets? Be Bless, Aimee

Hi Aimee! Welcome to GliderCENTRAL!
You came to a GREAT site with even BETTER members!
Last I heard gliders ARE legal in PA, but they require a permit.
I have been TOLD that they haven't given permits out in some time.
If I were you, I'd call the Fish and Wildlife Department.

I will definately do that!!! Thank you so much for being kind! I was on one forum and everyone treated me like I was foolish. I know this might be a controversial question...but even if the Fish & Game Comish. says I need a permit...would it be wrong of me to get 2 suggies (siblings) just as pets? Thats really all I want. No breeding here...just loving pets

Well, I'm not here to be mean. Just want to help. In regards to your question, I can't tell you want to do or not do. Only you can make that decision. I can't really say what I personally would do, because I don't know.

My theory is...I know I would be a good and responsible owner. And I'm not out to breed and or sell. So first of all how would anyone know??? and second of all why would it be bad? lol

Well, you would need a veterinarian. I know a reputable breeder would make sure you had the permit/s necessary, otherwise they would not sell to you. I don't know if vets check for permits before seeing your gliders there, but I know for certain that if you wanted to be a good glider mommy, you'd definitely have at LEAST 1-2 vets that specialized in gliders.

I spoke with my girls (dog & cat) vet a few months back. She worked in NY for about 15 years before her marriage brought her to us! (Thank GOODNESS!) and she said she saw quite a few suggies in NY at her old practice. I would feel more than comforable with her, since she takes such good care of my girls

Hi and welcome to GliderCentral I want to applaud you in doing your research before you purchase your sugar gliders. There was a discussion about gliders in PA this week, and the way I understand it, is that you need a permit, but right now they are not issuing any, which kind of make them illegal. Also, they are very strict. Please do the proper research, as I am only conveying what I've read recently. Here is a thread on re-homing a glider to PA

Thank you all so much for the information. I will be calling the fishing and game comish on Monday. I will fight for this for anyone in PA that wants a suggie. What a shame for everyone in this state

It is very sad indeed. I think it's silly that some states make it nearly impossible when you're supposed to have a permit. But like Gizmogirl said, it's great you're doing your research rather than blindly jumping into it only for it to later bite you in the patooty.

lol it's a good goal. I personally believe that these states that have gliders illegal simply just do not KNOW. I think if somebody with the proper resources to 'get to the top' could provide them the proper information, they'd see just how silly it is to have glider ownership illegal. On the flip side, however, I don't see how anybody would bother having it overturned because of all the money required to change laws.

So far, everyone is correct. Sadly...even though they say gliders require a permit in PA, they don't issue the permits - ever - which DOES, in fact, make them illegal to own in the state. I'm sorry. You do NOT want to chance having them without a permit. There have been several discussions here on the board about this and I know in one case, a woman was called to pick up some gliders that had been "found out" in PA and the police actually met them there to ensure the gliders would be leaving the state permanently. If caught with gliders, you run the risk of not only a fine, but they WILL confiscate your gliders and if unable to find a quick place for them to go out of state, they will also euthanize.

This is true, so no I wouldn't take the chance of owning them in PA, no matter how badly I wanted them. I just had a gentlemen contact me yesterday to buy two gliders from me, but he lives in PA. I had to turn him down. I won't risk my babies being euthanized just because they live in a specific state. Good luck on getting that law overturned! If you can do that, there will be a lot of happy gliders in PA! I know I've had several requests for them myself. Any chance of moving out of state? LOL
