Does anyone have experience with traveling overseas with sugar gliders or shipping them overseas? I'll be moving to Europe and I was wondering what the health and travel requirements are, or how to find those requirements for the country I'm traveling to. This summer, I'm going to Europe for only three weeks or one month and was thinking about taking my glider with me and then back but I'm not sure and have no idea if there is a quarantine required or no. I was emailing to some sources but never got an exact answer... Can anyone help?

From what I remember there is a quarantine. But someone else with more knowledge should be along.

Quarantine procedures vary. My personal opinion is to find someone trustworthy to watch your gliders when you travel for a month - I think this would be far too stressful for them. The flight is long and they could not travel with you in cabin, this is only the beginning of what could become something very stressful for them.

I wish I knew more about quarantines and what happens when you make a move abroad. If I find something, I'll be sure to post. In the meantime, hopefully someone will be here soon with better info!

I think the requirements vary by country. I remember Bourbon telling me once that she could have gone to Australia with Baybe, but they wouldn't have let Baybe back out of the country so she didn't go. Double and triple check before your trip is my best guess.

I agree, it'd be much easier if he stayed here while I'm gone. I thought so and I already found a very responsible person who owns gliders herself and was willing to watch him for me. So this summer would not be a problem, however, in 2012 I'm moving for good and before I got my little Fluffy, I was told by several sources (ministry of agriculture in one of the countries I'm traveling through and EU) that there is no quarantine required, while today I was talking to my sister and she was told that since they are exotic animals, there will probably be a quarantine needed. I know that this is maybe too early for me to be concerned about but I love my little boy sooo much and don't want him to be without me for so long in some quarantine. frown

I don't know anything about the rules for quarantine in foreign countries, but would be happy to take care of your glider when you travel this summer. I am in Michigan and do have gliders, myself. I am a breeder and do have 12 of them right now.

i'd personally find a very trustworthy reliable sitter here and go and when you come back you'll have your happy baby again. you can always do skype video conferencing calls to check in over there etc. i know you won't be able to touch but the safest way to me is always the best way thumb may sound silly to skype and talk to your glider, but to me that will let him know you are there, just not physically as i'm sure he knows the sound of your voice too. this would keep some bonding up. you can also mail fleece strips back for him with your scent for him to sleep with from time to time as well. There are usually a lot of q-tine procedures, legal paperwork etc and i'd just not want to put any glider through that. I remember i was at the airport picking up a glider once and someone was sending some dogs just to hawaii! and they had to keep those dogs in q-tine in a facility there for 30-45 days i believe. I have no idea what the import/export requirements are for your destination etc but I thought the video conferencing and sending fleece withyour scent would help you and him be able to adjust for the time apart. hug2

Someone from the states on another forum did move to the Virgin Isles for a while, I think they eventually came back. It's an involved process so not something I would bother with for just a month, but if you are planning to permanently reside then yes, now is definitely a good time to start checking the requirements.

Thank you for your replies smile. He's definitely staying here this summer when I'm gone. I also found out new information about this, now from the right source, and they said that they don't require quarantine, he just have to get rabies shot and a microchip. But as long as I know, sugar gliders don't get rabies shots or microchips.. I mean it would make sense because as far as I know, every mammal can get rabies but I just never heard of sugar gliders and rabies shots. I guess I have talk to our vet. dunno

Glider's body temperature is too low to host the rabies virus so they don't require shots. Microchips can cause the glider to self mutilate (to get the microchip out) so are not recommended either. And the microchip needle used to insert it is HUGE. I wouldn't want to do that to my glider/s.

I would get some letters from vets stating this and take with you on your first trip, as much info about gliders as you can. Then while there, talk to them and find out FOR SURE if there will be any problems. Get the information from them in writing so you don't have problems later.

That's what I thought. And I would never do anything that would hurt Fluffy frown. They said microchip or some kind of tatoo, and that sounds horrible too. I really feel bad now, I'll talk to our vet and try to found out what I should do.. Definitely what you suggest would be the best thing to start with, thank you.

What part of Europe are you moving to? I plan on going to college in England...so any information on this sort of thing would be great.

I'm moving to Slovakia, my whole family lives there. I'm sure that sugar gliders are way more popular in England and vets actually know what they need. The only problem is that UK has rather strict rules when it comes to animal import. I don't know about sugar gliders, but for dogs, cats and ferrets you need some extra paperwork and lab tests (otherwise they would have to spend 6 months in quarantine). But it's associated with rabies so it may not apply for suggies and again, they are becoming very popular there and more people know what they are so they may not require rabies shots and microchips..

At least one of the Australian zoos microchip all of their animals (including sugar gliders and even small feather tails). It is not something commonly done here, but they have apparently seen no side effects of chipping. I would absolutely do that sooner than later, though. To make sure healing and all goes well before you have to travel with them. (You do not want a SMing glider in quarantine). shakehead

Make sure you know what chip is required, also - there are a lot of different companies, should you decide to chip.

Yup, tomorrow, I'm making an appointment for monday with my vet and ask him everything. The sooner the better. I'm moving at the end of next year, but I wanted to make sure everything's gonna work out. They said that there's no quarantine for sugar gliders, the only conditions are rabies shot and microchip (or tattoo) worried.

Gretchen do you know what zoo this is? I'd love to speak with someone directly about it. Considering you can have the procedure done on dogs and cats for around $20, it might be handy to have for our gliders to help deter theft or positively identify for breach of contract situations.

No I have not seen the procedure done. If it is routinely done by a vet somewhere though, I would like to know more about it and how they do it. If they can microchip a feathertail, then sugar gliders seem large in comparison. Feathertails are literaly the size of a mouse.

I think I have good news. I contacted the country I'm traveling to again and they sent me a form (health certificate for traveling with marsupials) that has to be filled out and there's nothing about rabies shots or microchips. Only fecal tests smile
