So, thanks to a tv show I watched last night, I am doing some research on dandelions. I have feed dandelions to my gliders and iguana for several years now. I know the dandelion greens are very nutritious but it seems that there are some real medical benefits too.

Dandelion roots have properties that can help with liver issues such as hepatitis. I know there have been many gliders in the past couple of years that have died with "liver issues" and wonder if simply adding in dandelions into the diet can help curb some of this.

These are just some of the sites I've been reading

http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/organic-dandelion-root.html

http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/dandelion-000236.htm

http://www.quality-nutritional-supplements.com/dandelionroot.html

And there are MANY more.

Thoughts?

That is interesting, Teresa. I have fed dandelions to my gliders and reptiles as well. I always just think of it as a seasonal treat, lol.

It would be worth talking to a knowledgeable vet.

Very interesting! Thanks for the links.

I have a recipe for my parrots that includes dandelion root. This recipe is used at the big rescue in Colorado.

Are we just talking the roots, or are the greens good to? They're a big salad addition to the holistic minded.

And does anyone know of the CA:PH ratio?

Does anyone know of any sugar glider recipies that works them in?

KatFarrell, the greens have rich nutritional value, we are talking dandelion roots here to help with liver issues.

Maybe a few of us can discuss it with our vets? I think this is very interesting and can be so helpful if the roots have medical benefits for the liver.

I'm not sure about the Ca:P or the greens, I've found two different values: 1.4:1 and 2.8:1.

They are not available over here, I have ordered several times with no luck. You guys are lucky, it grows in your back yards as I understand it.

Something to consider when we talk to our vets about the dandelion root, is that it can reduce the blood sugar levels. This is only when given in large amounts. Just wanted to put this out there, overdose with side effects is possible.

Liezl, over here it is considered a WEED because it grows so prolificly usually in places people don't want it. If there is no ban on getting it, I'd be happy to send you a few this summer.

Thanks for pointing that out! A very important thing to remember when any item is looked at for adding, or potentially adding, into a diet. thumb

I have never been able to find it at the store here...
didn't think about actually digging some up, where we know there is no pesticides used... but really, you never know.

I'd love to know if anybody in the Greenville SC area knows where to buy some? I've tried many times for my lizards, which aren't around anymore. Maybe things have changed?

Great topic thumb

You might want to check your local health food store...I think I might have seen a 'tea' - not sure if it includes the roots or the leaves...will have to take a closer look.

I also remember seeing caspuls of ground dandelion root in the supliment section of either my local health food store or grocery store.

You can buy it as a liquid - and Milk Thistle has the same effect. Just be sure to buy ORGANIC, or it has alcohol in it. I did a google search for "Organic Liquid Milk Thistle" and came up with many results.

Milk Thistle is also used to help with liver issues and there are those that already give it to their gliders but the dandelion root is different.

Liezl...if you were to get some seeds, they grow VERY easy. If there are no laws against it, we can send you seeds this spring (when ours seed out).

ok, now i can breathe...lol. They are considered a BAD weed... there are yards that get taken over by them, and they take the nutrition from the grass and end up killing to grass... plus they spread like wildfire.

And just wanted to note that the PP vitamin does include milk thistle as Priscilla is aware of the benefits to the gliders... it might be nice to know how the dandilions would help... during the spring/summmer we have NO shortage in my yard!

Haha, agreed...definitly considered a horrid weed around here. laugh I never understood it as I thought they were pretty (before I learened of the benefits, lol).

Ok, so I just bought a bottle of dandelion root capsules. The company that made them is Nature's Way. 100 capsules came in the jar that I bought for $8.99 (and my health food store definitly up-charges). It has 1.62 grams of dandelion root per human serving (3 capsules).

I'm thinking that 1 capsule per batch of HPW would be an ok addition (I usually get about 2 ice cube trays full with each batch). Or would that be too much? Maybe 1 capsule/2 batches?

I don't think anyone should go changing their diets by adding this just yet. Especially without discussing it with your vet first.

We don't know how much to add in. And I'm not sure what the concentration levels are in the capsules you can purchase.

PLEASE do not rush out and start changing your diets.

I add in dandelion greens and flowers as TREATS for my gliders at this point and they are naturally growing, not processed concentraits.

Please be safe and make sure you discuss this with your vets first.

Thanks Dancing for the advice about using the greens & flowers as treats.

I'll def. ask my vet about it. Just wanted to get everyone's feedback first. That way I don't go to her empty handed.

I use Milk Thistle for one of my gliders after the vet ran some blood tests and suggested I use it.

I am taking one boy for a neuter on Friday and will discuss the Dandelion roots with her then.

Teresa, getting seeds to grow is a great idea. I'll have to find out if it will be legal to bring them in.
