I have shavings in mine now but the gliders make such a mess ,throwing it all over the floor . Is there anything else I can use that is still absorbant and helps cut down on odor ?

I personally use newspaper and change it every few days or so. I know that some people use fleece to line there cage trays and just take them out and wash them every couple of days. What kinda shavings are you using? Some shavings can be harmfull even toxic to gliders.

right now i'm just using paper towel and change it every morning when Cloey's gone to bed (she only messes up really at night when she's running around and playing)

newspapers are generaly safe to use but have been known in the past to contain toxic dyes.

nowadays newsprint is done with vegetable based dyes which are harmless to your critter

i'm not sure about the colored newsprint though! i believe (could be mistaken) that it's the back and white inks that are vegetable based.

if you're concerned about what's contained in the dyes, simply just call your paper and ask them.

but mostly it should be vegetable based

and i agree with aasweeney22, be careful what type of shavings you use!

well I was going to suggest Aspen shavings but it seems your already not successful with shavings. How thick of a layer are you putting in the tray? I noticed when I first started using it- I was making the layer too thick and the gliders played with it more- now I put down just enough to cover the pan & it's also not thick enough to be coming throught he divider bottom. So now when they dig through it- there's less in their way & less to throw around.

I use absorbant pads, the medical kind. They don't have anything in them (like puppy training pads might), no odor, he can't reach them, and I just toss them every couple days. I throw a bunch of pieces fleece on the bottom of the cage so that he has softer things to talk on. So far, that's worked for me.

I use aspen shavings as well . Maybe I am doing it too thick ? The just tunnel all over and shavings get all over the floor which in turn get tracked all over the house ! LOL So ,I will try to put "just enough" down and we'll see if they loose interest , otherwise it's newpaper from now on . Thankyou so much for all of your help everyone !

Do you not have a divider between your cage bottom & the liner? If not- I don't know what to suggest then- I've never heard of anyone's cages not having a divider.

I use a non-toxic bio-degradable lining called Carefresh. It's at most pet places. It's made from recyled wood pulp (not aspen or ceder) and does a great job absorbing smells and liquids. The biggest downside that I've found is that it doesn't spread as well as shavings so get the big bag.

Oh yes...it comes in different colors too so you can accessorize.

Stop laughing! We all are looking for that perfectly coordinated cage and we all know it.

I'm going to stop looking silly now.

I use brown packing paper from the office supply store... the only major problem I've run into is Leah likes to tear a hole in the paper and go sleep under it! lol! It's not perfect but it's a million times easier to clean up than shavings and I can still just throw away the germs and stuff.

I wonder if Pa-Purr litter would work... it's recycled paper thats no-dust, no clump, etc that I use for my ferrets. This one is pelletized, but they also make some that just looks like... sort of like shredded newspaper with the ink removed. Maybe that would work, it's sort of like wood shavings in a paper format?

My trays slide under the cages. I line them with one sheet of newspaper, which I change every couple of days....works like a charm.

I have tried just about everything - I prefer to use fleece and change and wash every few days as needed...I used to use care fresh - it is great at absorbing and keeps odor down - but if they have anything they can plow through or pick up to play with - they will! I was dumb enough to try corn cobb in the begining...what a mess! They threw it everywhere!

Nope , no divider . My husband made the cages for me , I didn't want a grate as I figured their poop would just stick to it and I'd have more cleaning to do ? Maybe I was wrong , anyhow ,I will try newspaper I think . Thankyou !

It is easier with the grate - and the newpaprer is not the best for them to be walking on - the ink also stains especially when wet!

I use the puppy training pads. They are easy to just roll up and throw away. Snuffels dosen't seem to be bothered or irritated with it. He dosen't really notice it at all !!
