I was wondering if anyone here as ever fed Mazuri Insectivore diet to their gliders? The lady I adopted my gliders from has been useing it for the gliders she owned for the past year or so. I thought about ordering some because at her house they seemed to love it. However It's been hard finding anyone who knows it exists. Let me know what you think.. here's the link..

Hey another Illinois person. I'm in central Illinois, near Springfield. Where are you? Welcome to GC!
I have used it. That is until I found that there were other types that were made strictly for gliders which means they are better for them. Here's one I've tried from Sun Coast http://www.sugar-gliders.com/wholesome-balance.htm My gliders really like it. I now use this one http://www.exoticnutrition.com/r00001.html This one my gliders loved so I stuck with it. Which ever way you go know this pelleted food of any brand should NEVER be their whole source of protien and vitamins. For that you need a proper diet supplement. (Click on the word diet and it'll take you to a list of diets that are good for your gliders) I personally feed BML but there ar others to choose from. Along with the diet you should also feed veggies and fruits. Each diet is different and therefore have a different list of fruits and veggies that should be fed with them. Best wishes for you and your gliders.

Out of curiousity how do you make the leadbeaters diet you use? Mine as far as I can tell are just on basic leadbeaters.. nothing has been modified. They seem to enjoy it but I'm always looking..

I'm near Chicago.. NW Suburbs. That suncoast from what I can tell isn't a pellet right? My gliders won't go near pellets so the little ball shape like Mazuri had was great. I only had a little left from the lady I adopted them from and I like to keep dry food in the cage when I'm not home. My gliders are on the leadbeaters diet.. one of the many variations I suppose, haha. And fruits and veggies are always added.

Our vet here suggests 50% Insectivore component (she likes the Mazuri or Reliable Products) and then 50% original Leadbeater's diet. Mix it up and serve a TBSP to each glider. It is served with a Tbsp of veggies (preferably ones high in calcium) and then you can add a tsp. of fruit as a treat. You can also add insects as treats.

The vet is the same one that VictoriaRose1982 uses.

Awesome thanks! That sounds pretty much like what the lady I adopted from was doing. I just didn't want to spend the money on Mazuri and then hear that it's terrible for them.

It isn't part of the "approved" or "suggested" diets listed here but it is definitely approved by a vet who is a leading authority on gliders, Dr. Cathy Johnson-Delaney. You just have to remember it is a part of a whole diet and not the only protein source!

I know a lot of other people put Mazuri out in their cages as a staple. It is a good product. agree

I biggest concern with Mazuri Insectivore diet is that the particle size is very small. To me, it seems like the gliders could possibly choke on them. I'd use either Reliable Protein Products Insectivore Fare (re-bagged as Zookeeper's Secret by several online vendors) or the Wholesome Balance food from Suncoast Sugargliders.

The Mazuri pellets are very small. Some of us here in WA soak it in low sodium chicken stock. We also blend it into our diet after it is soft. We don't use it as a hard kibble. However, I know people who do use it as a dry staple and their gliders don't choke on it. smile

Reliable Protein Products Insectivore Fare is another recommended brand from our vet. It is something like 40% moisture so I prefer to buy the Mazuri and then add my own liquid to it. The third product is Hedeghog diet from Pretty Pets International.

All three of these are specifically listed on the "diet and Care Recommendations for Sugar Gliders" provided by our vet, Dr. Cathy Johnson-Delaney. I don't believe that our vet is suggesting these as a "dry staple" but more as an actual component in a diet that many exotic vets suggest.

It is suggested that any of these insectivore components are 50% of the diet and then the other 50% of the primary diet is a nectar. Dr. Johnson-Delaney suggests using the original Leadbeater's Mix.

We feed a Tbsp. of veggies (preferably dark leafy greens high in Ca) and a tsp. of fruit as a treat. Insects are considered treats in this suggested diet as well.

I got some of this as a sample once. My kids really liked it and I fed them a couple of pieces at a time as a treat. They chew dry food up very well, I don't think this would be a choking hazard.

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.
